Michael Louis Calvillo R.I.P.

Author and filmmaker Greg Lamberson Tweeted this morning that author Michael Louis Calvillo passed away yesterday after a long battle with cancer. One of the most promising of the newest wave of horror writers, Calvillo’s books included I Will Rise, Lambs, 7 Brains, As Fate Would Have It, Bleed For You, and many more. He is survived by his wife of 13-years, Michelle, and their daughter. A genuinely sweet and warm guy who was a joy to talk to at conventions, and who was always welcoming to his readership, he will be missed.

Works in Progress

Here’s an update on what I’m currently working on.

THE LOST LEVEL: This is a man-out-of-time novel (think Warlord of Mars, Land of the Lost, or The Drive-In) that I hope to turn into a series. More sword and sorcery and weird science than horror, although it does tie heavily into my overall mythos. The first draft is finished. Working on the second draft now. Has been a very challenging book to write. In truth, it’s been a real bitch. But I can see the end of it now, and I think you’re going to dig it. To be published by Apex Book Company (no date yet).

FOUR KILLERS: This is an anthology for Cemetery Dance Publications. I’d hoped to write a new Exit story for it, but that story fell apart no matter how many times I tried to write it, so I’ve scrapped that idea and am writing something else instead. Working on that now, so don’t holler at Cemetery Dance about the book being late. The fault totally lies with me.

HOLE IN THE WORLD: Another man-out-of-time type novel, but much different than The Lost Level (mentioned above) and certainly more horrific. About halfway done the first draft. To be published by Camelot Books (no date yet).

SUNDANCING: Part of this year’s Maelstrom set. If you enjoyed my my novella The Girl on the Glider, then you’ll enjoy this. It’s a meta-fictional story about a horror writer whose first film debuts at Sundance, and what he had to go through to get there, and what he learns about himself, and the people in his life, and the business that he’s in. Includes a wonderful scene in which he, his friends, and a child actor pelt Corbin Bernsen’s personal assistant and a marketing guy from Warner Brothers with snowballs.

SUBURBAN GOTHIC: A sequel to Urban Gothic. The surviving mutants leave the city and head into the suburbs. You can imagine what happens next. To be published by Deadite Press (December 2012).

APOCRYPHA: This book exclusively for the former newsletter subscribers is pretty much laid out and finished. What’s delaying it is securing the rights to all the material. Some of the stories are very early ones which I don’t have the rights to, and I’m in the process of securing those rights. Soon as that is completed, I’ll announce a publication date.

WITH TEETH: A vampire novel. Think Salem’s Lot meets Breaking Bad meets Squidbillies. That’s all I’m going to tell you about it, other than it’s the most excited and on fire I’ve been about a novel since The Rising. To be published in trade hardcover by Cemetery Dance (no date yet).

THE LAST ZOMBIE: BEFORE THE AFTER: This latest story-arc examines our cast’s lives during the initial zombie outbreak. These five issues are the calm before the storm that’s been building ever since Federman grew suspicious of Ian. Also worth mentioning – the first issue will feature our first foray into variant covers (with an awesome cover by Mike Hawthorne). To be published by Antarctic Press later this year.

UNTITLED POLITICAL THRILLER: This is something I’m co-writing with J.F. Gonzalez for a mass-market publisher. I’m not allowed to tell you anything else about it at this time.

UNTITLED THRILLER: This is something else I’m co-writing with J.F. Gonzalez for that same mass-market publisher. I’m not allowed to tell you anything else about it either at this time.

SOUTHERN FRIED CLICKERS: On Twitter, F. Paul Wilson suggested to J.F. Gonzalez and I that we write a Clickers – Old West novel called High Plains Clickers. This led to J.F. and I discussing during a long drive whether or not we had another Clickers novel in us, which led to the title “Southern Fried Clickers” and this random line of dialogue “Boy, howdy. That’s the biggest damn crawdad I ever did see!” and a description of a group of Clickers crashing a Klu Klux Klan rally, which led to J.F. having to pull over to the side of the road because he was laughing so hard, which made us decide we now have to write it.

UNTITLED BIBLE: Again, not saying much about this one for now, except that it’s a high-end, high-dollar, ultra-collectible book J.F. Gonzalez and I are producing in partnership with Larry Roberts exclusively for the limited edition marketplace, and it will involve both our mythos, and is being written with exclusivity and value to the customer in mind. The three of us hope to craft the best collectible book of our careers with this one.

His new album, Comic Kong, came out last week and is available to download from iTunes and Amazon. It would mean a lot to me if you showed him your support and bought one. Would mean a lot to Pete, as well. He might even show up at your house and tell you stories about drinking with me.

Dark Hollow – Movie Update

With Ghoul still airing on Chiller (check your local listings) and Fast Zombies Suck shooting this summer, things are coming together for the next film adaptation of my work — Dark Hollow, directed by Paul Campion (The Devil’s Rock). Shane Rangi (Spartacus, Chronicles of Narnia, Lord of the Rings) is attached to play Hylinius, and Weta is on board for the effects. Paul was in town this weekend to do some reference and location scouting. He and I, accompanied by Jeff Heimbuch (The Ties That Bind) took lots of photos of Central Pennsylvania farms, creepy abandoned farmhouses, hex symbols, and visited Rehmeyer’s Hollow — the partial real-life inspiration for my own LeHorn’s Hollow. Photos of all this are on the Dark Hollow Movie Facebook Page, and there are plenty more to come. Head over there and Like it so you don’t miss out.

I’ve posted another free story on my YouTube channel – “Waiting For Darkness” (one of the bonus stories in THE CAGE, on sale now). And don’t forget, “Going Under” – the prequel to GHOUL – is still free to read on Chiller’s website.
