What Star Trek Taught Me About Diversity

I was and am a Trekker. I love Star Trek. Since its inception in 1966, I was plopped in front of our black and white TV to watch the amazing adventures of the crew of the USS Enterprise. I went along with the crew as Star Trek boldly went where few shows dared to go, tackling social issues like poverty, overcrowding, war, racism and fascism head-on and presenting a vision of the future where humanity has overcome its prejudices and hatred.

At the heart of Gene Roddenberry’s vision was a Vulcan philosophy known as IDIC—Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. More than just a catchy sci-fi phrase to Gene, IDIC represented a real-world belief that diversity is not just something to be tolerated but something to be celebrated, valued, and even essential to progress.

Lessons from the Bridge of the Enterprise

In the 1960s, seeing a Black woman, an Asian man, a white man from Idaho and a Russian officer working together on the USS Enterprise was groundbreaking. This diversity was a statement that the future could belong to everyone.
As just one example of the shows real world impact, a little girl named Mae Jemison watching Star Trek in her Chicago home was inspired by seeing someone that looked like her on the bridge of the Enterprise. She was the first African American astronaut to travel into space in 1992.

The Power of Infinite Diversity

The Star Trek universe, like ours, is populated by a dazzling array of cultures, species, and perspectives, each contributing to the richness of life. Diversity—whether in race, gender, culture, experience, or thought—creates stronger communities, richer discussions, and more innovative solutions. Sure, different ideas can cause disagreement and conflict but that can be mitigated if we can come together with an open heart. When we embrace differences rather than fear them, we unlock possibilities that a homogeneous mindset could never reach. The experience of the citizens of the United States of America has proven this to be fact time and time again.

Why IDIC Matters Now More Than Ever

In today’s world, division and polarization are the new normal. Diversity programs are being eliminated at the federal and corporate level. This blog post makes no attempt to debate the value of these programs but it feels to me that the very idea of diversity is now under siege.

Fear of the unfamiliar fuels conflict. But Star Trek reminds us that progress is made when we seek to understand, not when we build barriers. True inclusion means more than just acknowledging diversity—it means appreciating and learning from it. It means fostering workplaces, communities, and conversations where all voices are heard and valued. It also means not tolerating intolerance.

How I Pledge to Honor IDIC in My Life

I hope that we as a nation and as a world will grow to recognize the positive power of diversity and overcome our base impulses to run with our own “herd”. Since I can only control my own mind and actions, I commit to do better and embrace my fellow world citizens with the following actions.

• Listen to diverse perspectives – Seek out stories and viewpoints different from my own as long as they don’t contain hate. I will not tolerate intolerance.
• Celebrate differences rather than erase them – True inclusion isn’t about making everyone the same but recognizing the beauty in uniqueness.
• Challenge biases – Like Spock confronting his human side, I must acknowledge and overcome my own prejudices.
• Build inclusive spaces – Whether at work, online, or in my communities, I will help contribute to environments where people feel safe and valued.

I find it necessary to say that while I commit to embrace differing schools of thought, I will not respect nor embrace world views that believe that hate of another group is a justifiable basis for a worldview.

I believe that Diversity isn’t just a moral good—it’s a necessity for progress, discovery, and a thriving future. If we truly want to “boldly go” into a better world, embracing Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations is a great place to start.

Live Long and Prosper,

Silent Nights: How To Survive the Holidays With No Family

The holiday season can be one of the most challenging times of the year if you’re navigating life without family connections. Between the endless commercials showcasing happy family gatherings and the well-meaning but often intrusive questions from coworkers or acquaintances, it’s easy to feel out of place. Many people find themselves in similar situations to mine for various reasons. In my case, my family does not celebrate holidays due to their religious beliefs. In fact, just to say Merry Christmas to them would cause a ruckus.

Through the years I’ve learned some ways to not just survive the holidays but to thrive. Maybe this will help someone somewhere going through it.

1. Redefine What the Holidays Mean to You
The first step to reclaiming the holiday season is to redefine what it means for YOU. Let go of societal expectations and focus on what genuinely brings you joy. Maybe it’s a day to rest and recharge, or perhaps it’s an opportunity to give back to others. By creating your own traditions, you can reshape the season into something that feels authentic and fulfilling. Own your joy journey.

2. Create Your Own Community
Family isn’t always defined by blood. In fact, my family is comprised of people that I’ve selected to bring into my life. Use the holidays to create or strengthen connections with friends, neighbors, or coworkers. Host a “Friendsgiving” or organize a small holiday gathering with others who might be in a similar boat. You’d be surprised how many people are looking for meaningful connection during this time of year.

3. Volunteer Your Time
One of the most rewarding ways I’ve found through the years to combat loneliness during the holidays is to help others. Volunteer at a local shelter, food bank, or community center. Acts of kindness not only make a difference for those in need but can also help you feel more connected and purposeful.

4. Treat Yourself
If the idea of a holiday dinner for one feels daunting, flip the script. Plan a day that’s entirely about you. Watch your favorite movies, order your favorite takeout, or cook a meal you’ve always wanted to try. Indulge in self-care and remind yourself that it’s okay to prioritize your own happiness. One of my favorite Christmas memories was a Star Wars marathon with Chinese food.

5. Manage Expectations
It’s easy to get caught up in comparing your reality to the glossy images on social media or the endless parade of holiday movies. Remember, movies aren’t real and those photos and videos on social media rarely tell the full story. Everyone has their struggles, even if they’re not visible. Practice gratitude for what you do have and give yourself grace for what’s missing.

6. Plan an Adventure
If you’re able to, consider using the holidays as an opportunity to travel. Exploring a new place can be a refreshing way to escape the typical holiday environment and create unique memories. Solo travel can be empowering and offer a sense of freedom that’s hard to match.

7. Celebrate the Small Wins
The holidays can feel overwhelming, but they’re just a few days out of the year. Focus on small victories: decorating your space, reaching out to someone you care about, or even just making it through a tough moment. Every step counts.

Being without family during the holidays can feel isolating, but it doesn’t have to define your experience. By taking proactive steps to care for yourself and seek connection, you can create a season that’s meaningful on your own terms. The most important thing to remember is that you’re not alone in this, and there are countless ways to find joy and connection—even in unexpected places.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Choosing a Publishing Path

When I first embarked on my writing journey, the prospect of getting published felt like stepping into a vast and exciting world with countless possibilities. As my manuscript began to take shape, I was faced with one of the most pivotal decisions of the writing process: Should I pursue traditional publishing or venture into the world of independent publishing? This choice was both exhilarating and daunting, and I want to share the personal insights and reflections that guided me through this decision-making process.

The Traditional Publishing Dream
From the moment I started writing seriously, the idea of traditional publishing held a certain allure. I imagined walking into bookstores and seeing my book on the shelves, backed by a reputable publishing house. Traditional publishing felt like the golden ticket—a mark of validation and success.

Pros of Traditional Publishing:
Professional Support: I was drawn to the idea of having a team of professionals—editors, designers, and marketers—dedicated to my book. The thought of their expertise shaping my manuscript and ensuring it reached its full potential was comforting.

Industry Credibility: There’s something inherently prestigious about being published by a well-known house. I envisioned this as a way to build credibility and gain wider recognition.

Distribution and Marketing: I liked the idea of established distribution channels and marketing efforts that a traditional publisher could offer. It seemed like a surefire way to reach a larger audience and have my book placed in major bookstores and libraries.

The Appeal of Independent Publishing

As I learned more about independent publishing, I found myself increasingly intrigued by the freedom and control it offered. The concept of self-publishing was evolving, and it started to look like a viable and exciting alternative.

Pros of Independent Publishing:
Creative Control: The idea of having complete control over every aspect of my book—from the content to the cover design—was incredibly appealing. I relished the thought of making decisions that aligned perfectly with my vision.

Faster Publication: I was eager to see my book in print sooner rather than later. Independent publishing promised a quicker turnaround, which was a significant factor in my decision-making.

Higher Royalties: The prospect of retaining a larger share of the royalties was tempting. I knew that while the upfront costs would be my responsibility, the potential for higher earnings was an enticing trade-off.

Weighing the Options
As I weighed my options, I realized that each path had its own set of trade-offs. Traditional publishing offered support and industry validation, but it also came with longer timelines and less creative control. Independent publishing promised autonomy and quicker results but required me to take on additional responsibilities and costs.

I started by setting clear priorities for my publishing journey. I wanted to retain creative control and be involved in every aspect of my book’s creation. I was also eager to get my book into readers’ hands without the lengthy wait times associated with traditional publishing. Also, memoir is a tough category for agents and publishers unless the memoir is of a famous or important figure’s life. I am neither, just a guy with a story to tell.

Making the Decision
Ultimately, the decision boiled down to what mattered most to me at that moment. While traditional publishing was incredibly appealing, I realized that the freedom and control offered by independent publishing aligned more closely with my goals.

After much consideration and trying the traditional submission route for a time, I chose the independent publishing route, and it’s been a transformative experience. I’ve learned so much about the publishing process, from editing and design to marketing and distribution. The journey has been challenging, but it’s also been deeply rewarding to see my book come to life exactly as I envisioned it.

Reflections and Moving Forward
Choosing between traditional and independent publishing is a deeply personal decision, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. It’s important to consider your goals, preferences, and resources. For me, independent publishing offered the creative freedom and control I desired, and it has allowed me to be actively involved in every aspect of my book’s journey.

If you’re faced with a similar decision, I encourage you to reflect on what’s most important to you and what you hope to achieve with your book. Whichever path you choose, remember that both traditional and independent publishing have their own unique advantages and can lead to success in their own ways.

After six months+ of research and preparation, I am thrilled to announce that my memoir, The Truth About Demons is being released on January 15th, 2025.

Ultimately, both routes have the potential to bring your story to life. Whether you go the traditional route or opt for self-publishing, the most important thing is to stay true to your voice and keep writing with passion. Happy publishing!
