Please Vaccinate Your Children

I could have written this, but since I didn’t, here you go. What she said.

Where Did I Put the Wine?

In the Happy News Department, my latest blood test reveals a normal, healthy liver! Enzymes are back down where they’re supposed to be, so I guess I can write off the crazy-high numbers of a few months ago as part of the general stress of the time with the complication ofmassive doses of pain meds for a hurt back.

Where did I put the wine? Bring it on, folks!

Except… I kind of like not drinking every day. I know, I know, but there it is. I may drink when we go out or we’re visiting people, bu...

Have Nationwide Insurance? Consider Switching.

A Supreme Court case isthe subject of a Raw Story article titled Supreme Court Lets Stand Ruling that Firing Woman for Breastfeeding not Sexist Because Men Can Lactate.

The Raw Story does tend to sensationalize their headlines, and they do latch on (breastfeeding moms will get that pun) to a deeply buried part of the ruling when they shout about the “men can lactate” thing. A deeper reading of the case documents shows that the reasoning of the circuit court – and SCOTUS – centered on technic...

An Unexpected Heirloom

Here’s a hint to what’s been going on around here:

The antique chest The antique chest

This bit of dark awesomeness is a chest that belonged to my father-in-law. And his mother before him. And her father before her. Seriously, we don’t know how old it is.

It’s been tucked into my FIL’s house for years, storing his vast collection of photo albums. We almost let it go into the estate sale, but at the last minute, neither Himself nor I could let it go. We wrestled it into the car and drove it home, where it now...

Just another reason serious people discount Fox News – Contra Costa Times

Hmmm… Just this morning Himself and I were shaking our heads over the new Republican panel on Benghazi, over how the Repubs continue to spew lies and false data because there are no real consequences for doing it.

And that’s our fault, at least a little. I know the political machine (and this includes Dems and other parties) is an entity unto itself, separate and out of reach of the American people. But we can still make a difference, if enough of us clamor long enough and loud enough.

It’s nea...

Why chicken soup when ill? – Contra Costa Times

Have some good news. Note the list of ingredients he includes. Also note that chicken soup is good for asthma.

I would add to make it a hot and sour soup to really clear out those membranes. Besides… yum.

The Swinging Reader

Are you a promiscuous reader? I am. It’s rare if I’m reading just one book. Probably as a child, I read one at a time, but for many years, I’ve been a reading swinger. Maybe it started during college, when I had several textbooks and other assigned reading going, and in an effort to save my sanity, I’d pick up a novel to read for five minutes before falling asleep.

I’ve always needed fiction. It stimulates my mind, but at the same time it’s restful. I think that’s because it really is aneed....

Have a Happy, Geeky New Year

With this post, I will finally get around to acknowledging that it’s no longer 2014. I don’t know about you, but I still get a thrill when I think about these year numbers. When you start reading science fiction in 1963, as I did, the 21st century was thefuture, man. Way off in time when all these fantastic things would be happening.

Yet here we are. It’s 2015 and ya know? There are some of those fantastic things actually going on. Just typing this post on my tablet/laptop hybrid, with worl...
