A special scene from The Kry Chronicles.
Seth awoke to the sound of howling outside his tent. He looked around to find that his tent was still dark. It was still night. He listened some more to the howling and realized that the noises he was hearing were from wolves. Seth sat up and got off the cot he was sleeping on. The night was cold, but he felt comfortable in it. Seth walked to the opening of his tent and looked out into the darkness. The moon was high, casting a pale glow onto the dark world around Seth. He looked straight away from him to see a large wolf walking into the forest that they were close to. For some reason Seth wasn’t scared, he felt intrigued. The wolf he had just seen was bigger than he imagined a wolf to be. Was that Orin? He was a werewolf, maybe he changed to see why wolves were out in the forest. Seth stepped out of his tent and quickly moved closer to the woods. There was another howl and Seth stopped. He knew wolves were predators, this could be dangerous. Still Seth felt no fear, instead he felt curious. Seth sighed and walked into the woods. The wind blew through the trees, a voice whispering him forward. Seth walked closer to the sound of howling down a trail that was illuminated by the moon’s soft glow. Seth looked out from the trail he was on to see a group of wolves standing around under the trees. One of the wolves was larger than the others. Its fur was a soft brown that covered the wolf’s body. Its coat was clean and looked almost well brushed, unlike the other wolves around the big one whose coats looked matted and rundown. The big wolf was talking to one of the other wolves and Seth recognized the voice from the large wolf as Orin. Seth got closer and the other wolves in the pack he was looking at stopped howling and gazed at Seth with their yellow eyes. Some moved away from Seth while others stood their ground but looked like they were ready to run if they needed to. Orin turned and looked at Seth with interest. Seth was surprised to see that Orin’s eyes were not yellow like the other wolves. His eyes glowed a sapphire blue the same color of his human eyes, only as a wolf his eyes seemed to shine like they held power.
“Seth?” Orin asked, his mouth moving as he talked. “Did the howling of my friends wake you?”
Seth nodded slowly. He wasn’t scared, but he was coming to realize that he was surrounded by wolves. Should he be scared? “Orin,” Seth stated looking at his wolf form with amazement. “What are you doing out here?”
Orin sniffed the air and gave a huff. “I heard the wolves start howling and thought I’d come and visit with them.”
The wolf that Orin was talking to, turned and looked at Seth. “What brings you here?”
“Seth is a friend of mine.” Orin told the wolf calmly. “He’s the Chosen One of Remtaya.” Orin looked at Seth with a teasing sound to his voice.
Seth looked at Orin with a frown. “You really don’t believe I’m the Chosen One, do you?”
Orin chuckled and shook his large head. “No, Serena gave me a very passionate speech about how there are no more Chosen Ones. Admittedly I already knew that, but Serena gave some good points anyways.” Orin looked down with his eyes like he was sad about something. Seth could feel the worry Orin had for Serena. He was concerned if she was okay at Remtaya.
Seth looked at the wolves that seemed to be playing with each other in the moonlight. He looked back at Orin gazing at the large wolf in front of him. “You care for Serena a lot, don’t you?” Seth said already knowing the answer.
Orin nodded. “The Kry Erin and Terrin were right. She is the first thing I think of as I rise and the last thing I think of before I rest.”
Seth smiled a little thinking about how Serena was lucky to have a father like Orin in her life. Then a terrible thought came to Seth. Everyone that was with him were there to protect him so that he could get to Korson and kill him. But what if Orin or any of his other friends were struck down and killed in the process. Seth looked at Orin and gazed at his rather beautiful glowing blue eyes.
“Orin, if the time comes and you have a chance. I want to you run away from whatever battle that happens when we get to Kondoma. Serena needs you; I couldn’t handle it if you or anyone would die because of me.” Seth said nervously.
Orin looked at the wolf that he had been talking to before Seth got to where they were. “I’m happy to hear your pack is doing good.” He told the wolf. “I need to leave now.” He said with a snort. The wolf bowed their head to him and walked over to where the other wolves were. Orin turned and walked closer to Seth so that his large body was right next to him. “Let’s go back to the camp.” Orin said as Seth walked with him. “My watch is almost up.”
They walked up the trail as Orin looked at Seth.
“Seth, I’m sorry that this is happening to you.” he said wholeheartedly. “I would have tried to fight it for you, but the senate would have stopped me, plus I’m not your care giver or none of this would be happening to you.”
“I wish more people thought like you.” Seth insisted. “Almost everyone thinks I’m the Chosen One and that makes me expendable it seems like.”
Orin looked ahead and sighed. “Not everyone follows Remtaya so blindly like Coven.” Orin stated. “Kitty and Evan for example. The promise that Kitty made is a good example that they care for you deeply. That kind of friendship is powerful. I know that deep down they don’t think you’re the Chosen One, and that they will protect you the best they can.”
Seth smiled a little and nodded. “I just hope it doesn’t kill them.”
“Don’t worry about others dying around you. I have hope that there could be a different way this adventure could play out.” Orin looked at Seth with is kind glowing eyes.
“Really?” Seth asked, looking at Orin with hope.
“Yes, you’re not like the other Chosen Ones. You could find a way to peace without killing Korson.” Orin stated with a soft non-threating growl deep in his throat.
Seth thought about what Kei had told him about how Orin was one of the good ones. Orin truly seemed like he cared and was hoping for another way to end the conflict they were all in.
Seth looked at Orin smiling shyly. “Sorry I interrupted the conversation you had with Kei.” He apologized to him.
Orin chuckled. “It’s fine, Kei and I go way back. I was actually wondering if it was the same fox that I knew. The first time I met them they were a boy.” He explained.
Seth tilted his head slightly. “How could it be the same fox if this Kei is a female?”
“Foxes like the Kry, and some other creatures, are gender fluid, they can change their gender as easily as a human can put on a hat.” Orin explained. “If Kei hadn’t shown it to me, I don’t think I would have believed it.”
“That’s fascinating.” Seth stated thinking about how interesting that could be.
They had made it back to the camp and Orin looked over at Seth’s tent. “You should rest.” He told him kindly. I’m about to wake my replacements and turn in myself.”
Seth nodded and smiled at Orin. “Thank you for talking with me.” He told him before saying goodnight and walking back to his tent.
“Seth?” Orin asked, his mouth moving as he talked. “Did the howling of my friends wake you?”
