Art Down Under - Part 1
One of my favorite parts of traveling is the creative inspiration it provides. I find that my art can change, in both subtle and dramatic ways, when I am away from home and on an adventure. This has always been the case when I visit Australia and my recent trip there was no exception.
Several of my workshops were hosted by Fiber Arts Australia and my use of fabric bits and stitching, already a part of my art to a degree, has noticeably increased as a result. Happily I found time to create a good deal of work during my stretch in Australia and am itching to create more now that I am home. Here are just some of the pieces I made, with more posts to follow in the coming days.

New: PaperArtsy Stamp Sets
All your stamp lovers out there...I am excited to share my two newest stamp sets from PaperArtsy. The majority of my stamps with PA have been designed around elements that are part of my mixed media artwork. These represent a new direction for me and are all taken from my own photography from my travels.
Eclectica Seth Apter Set 09 (ESA09)
The images from Set 09 were taken in the United States, the UK and in Australia. Clockwise from the upper-left, these are computer-altered photographs of a vintage game board, a typewriter keypad, a stack of paint cans, and an artist flat file.
This artwork was made using all 4 stamps, each in a different way.
----------------
Eclectica Seth Apter Set 10 (ESA10)
Images in Set 10 were created from photographs taken in the UK and the United States. Plus there is a stamp based on a photo of a vintage, latin text -- cause you cannot have enough text stamps of course. Images, clockwise from upper-left are from photographs of a wish-wall of tags, latin text, a gas pump sign, a leafless tree and some 3D letters spelling out a favorite phrase of mixed media artists both near and far.
This artwork uses all but one stamp from set 10.
These stamp sets are available at both online and brick & mortar shops. And are available now in my online shop.
Happy stamping!

5 Principles of Collage

I love collage. It is accessible, enjoyable and just plain fun. I look at collage as taking bits and pieces that do not belong together and using them to create a cohesive whole. By that definition, it is almost like putting together a jigsaw puzzle. I say almost because the pieces are not typically created to fit together, and in that lies the challenge. I often tell participants in my workshops that it is easy to make a collage. But it isn't easy to create a good one.

In my video workshop Seth Apter's Top 10 Collage Principles , I outline 10 approaches to collage to help guide artists to a more satisfying result. These are ideas to consider ion you are a beginner, a seasoned pro who is struggling with completing an individual piece, or if you find yourself in a dreaded artist block.
As Artist of the Month for July at Cloth Paper Scissors, I have written a guest post here on the CPS blog outlining 5 of the 10 principles and sharing an extra tip for each. Check out the post to read about Overlapping, Outlining, Repeating, Contrasting, and Guiding.
And until the end if July, you can save 30% off this video workshop as well as all my other media products at Interweave.

Aussie Book of Moments
Excited to have begun what has become my annual adventure in Australia. I will be traveling during that time, teaching workshops and having a ton of creative fun. First stop this year was at Studio Artes in Hornsby, a suburb of Sydney, in a workshop sponsored by Sallianne McClelland.
Two days of mixed media making, book binding, and a lot of laughs.
So many familiar faces from prior visits and wonderful new artists attended as well. And of course Sallianne...the photo bomber in the back.
I was gobsmacked by the level of creativity, as can be seen in these details from the books and pages made by this talented crew.

The Must List

Sending big thanks out to Canada's Creative Scrapbooker magazine who has included my Baked Texture embossing powders from Emerald Creek on their Must List in their Summer 2018 issue.

This gorgeous piece of art, made using Baked Texture, from Gwen Lafleur was featured as well.

Thirty Days

This weekend I am heading down under for a month-long art adventure in Australia - all of which will be shared with you via this blog and all my social media sites.
websitefacebook - business pagefacebook - personal profileinstagrampinterestyoutube
During that period of time, my online shop will be closed. If you have thought about ordering something...now is the time. The shelves are filled with original art, stencils, stamps, paint and - yes - even every flavor of Baked Texture embossing powder.

Saturday 6/23 will be my last day to ship and the shop will be shut by mid-day.
If you are interested in getting an email when the shop re-opens, please feel free to email me at shap97@gmail.com.
And as always...thank you for your support!

The Bakery: 4
Grab some popcorn -- and your heat tool. It's movie time...
Barbara from Joggles shares a wonderful video, reviewing the different powders and sharing both tips and techniques to create multiple effects using Baked Texture. You are going to want to watch this one.
Heather Tracy hits it out of the ballpark once again with her video highlighting elegant grunge using Baked Texture and stamps.
Barb Owen from How to Get Creative shares a long video (2 ½ hours+) experimenting with Baked Texture and other embossing powders from Emerald Creek. Her creative play begins at about the 36 minute mark and she shows step-by-step how the powders look on different backgrounds and with different application methods.
Sara Naumann shares a Facebook video in which she shows several embossing techniques to add Baked Texture effects to cards. But the process would work with any mixed media application equally well. She also includes step-by-step instruction in her blog post as well.
In this video, Peg Robinson demonstrates how she uses Baked Texture to add details and texture to her handmade, homemade clock. She has thrown in some of my stencils from StencilGirl Products too.

Stamp Heaven
I am a sucker for a rubber stamp. Those of you who know me might guess correctly that my favorite type of stamp is one that is abstract, grungy and backgroundy (is that even a word?). In other words, a perfect addition to all things mixed-media. Whether used with ink, paint or embossing powders...stamping can add details, dimension, and depth to your work. Those of you looking for a bit of history about stamps can find it here. Those of you looking to make your mark can look here.
Since 2015 I have designed and produced closed to 50 stamp sets and a whole bunch of single stamps- which translates to several hundred-plus individual stamps. With so many releases, it is easy for older stamp sets to get lost. I hate to play favorites so I thought I would remind you all of my stamps - all of which are available in my online shop. Highlighted today are my designs with Impression Obsession.
