Featuring: The Gift

There is a new kid in town. Born on April 20th, it is 75 pages long, and measures 8 1/4" x 11 3/4". It is the new magazine Featuring: Art Journaling, Mixed Media & More... and you can watch the birth here or preview the pages here. Featuring is a dream come true for Marit Barentsen, the artist and blogger from the Netherlands who has put together a gorgeous, informative, and inspiring Issue #1.

The physical quality of this magazine (large size, glossy pages, professional layout) is special and it is filled with fascinating features, including a themed art gallery, the results of a survey about Etsy, artist and museum profiles, artist interviews, drawing and journaling techniques, a studio tour, and so much more. You can learn more about and purchase Featuring here. And learn how you can submit to Issue #2 here.
I am also happy to report that an altered book collaboration that I completed with Jill Zaheer can also be found on the pages of this inaugural issue. Called The Gift, Jill and I collaborated to create two books, each of which was filled with art that was inspired by original poetry.

Got the Itch?

Then scratch it. Scratch Cam it that is, the vintage photo app for the iPhone. Every month, David Hayes from Clearer Reflections sponsors the Recipe Book Project, an online collaboration of iPhonography art. I have been playing along for several months now and have decided to go abstract, using the Scratch Cam app to create my contribution:

Itch
A recent guest post on Create Mixed Media provides a great overview of the project, several sample recipes, and guidelines for you to play along. It is not too late to join in this month, as my post is a bit early. The project officially runs on May 16th, at which time Dave will provide links to all the participants on his blog.

The Pulse: Rewind

The last few months have been an adventure of a lifetime. I have traveled throughout the United States and Canada, celebrating the release of my first book The Pulse of Mixed Media: Secrets and Passions of 100 Artists revealed. I have met countless bloggers and artists along the way, many of whom have been good friends online for years. Now they are good friends in "real life" as well.
I wanted to share with you, and document for me, the highlights of a journey that has itself been one of the highlights of my life. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

------At my first book signing held at Annex 24 Gallery in Lancaster, PA in conjunction with "Out of the Dark", an exhibition by Loryn Spangler-Jones based on the artwork she contributed to the book.

------
Contributing artist Jen Crossley, in NYC all the way from Australia, seeing her art in the book for the first time.

------My artist talk, book signing, and art exhibition held at the Gallery Link at the Ellenville Public Library and Museum in the Hudson Valley in New York.

------You haven't had fun until you co-host a podcast with Mark Lipinski on Creative Mojo. AND talk to contributing artists Michelle Ward, Julie Prichard, Lisa Hoffman, Pam Carriker, and Angela Cartwright. Talk about art all stars!

------It just kept getting better and better. On the last day of March The Ink Pad in NYC hosted a panel discussion and book signing with contributing artists Michelle Ward, Jill Zaheer, Roxanne Evans-Stout,  Danny Gregory, Karen Cole, and Julie Prichard.

------Barnes and Noble? My book? Facing out? Really?!

------Visiting the art salon at Judith HeartSong Fine Art Studio and Gallery in Glen Echo, MD. That's contributing artist Lisa Jurist on the far left.

Into Canada! Party, signing and talk at Le Marche St George in Vancouver.

Contributing artists Patricia Larsen, Lelainia Lloyd, and Leslie Avon Miller were there to celebrate.

------
Final stop on the tour was Bellevue Art and Frame just outside of Seattle, WA. Big turn out of contributors for this one including Alicia Caudle, Robert Stockton, Leslie Avon Miller, Delorse Lovelady, Lisa JonesMoore and Donna Watson. Artists John Arbuckle and Jeane Myers are in this picture too!

Sending out thanks to Elizabeth Wix, Lisa Hoffman, Lelainia Lloyd, Cheryl Ford, and Leslie Avon Miller for allowing me to use some of their pictures in this post. Back in the Saddle Again

My travels have come to an end and the events to celebrate the release of my book The Pulse of Mixed Media are winding down.

The book was released on March 2nd and the last two months have been a whirlwind of excitement and fun. I lost count of the number of artists and bloggers I met but I do know that I managed to have over 25 of the contributors sign my book...so far!

I have been posting bits and pieces along the way on my Facebook and Twitter accounts so you could all travel with me. Several posts covering all my book events will be up soon on my blog, with many pictures as promised.

My post office box runneth over and all these packages were waiting for my return. They are the remainder of the submissions for my 5 x 5 project. The deadline has passed and I thank the many of you who submitted. More information will be posted about this soon but I can tell you now that I have big plans for this project. BIG plans. So stay tuned!

Feed Me

Jenn Mason, artist and editor of Cloth Paper Scissors magazine, is part of this year's Brookline Open Studios on May 5th and 6th in Brookline, Massachusetts. Being the generous person and visionary that she is, she is opening the doors to her studio for a good cause...Meals on Wheels. Jenn is hosting Feed Me: the 7 x 7 Show.

The show will include 49 pieces of art work, displayed in a 7 x 7 grid, by artists from Brookline and the entire United States. For a $49 donation, you will get the artwork of your choosing (first come first served) as well as feed a senior for 7 days. You can see many of the pieces, all of which broadly fit the theme of 'food', on Jenn's blog and follow along on the 7 x 7 Facebook page.

I am happy to be a contributing artist to the show and have created the follow piece entitled 'Welcome.'

The pineapple is often a symbol of welcome and to me is the perfect image for a piece of art connected to Meals on Wheels.

North by Northwest

This week, my book tour brings me to the Northwest, with stops in both the USA and Canada.

On Thursday, May 3rd I will be in Vancouver, BC at Le Marche St. George. Join me for a book signing and launch party at 7pm. Also attending will be a number of contributing artists from the book, including Patricia Larsen, Lelainia Lloyd, and Leslie Avon Miller. Those of you in the area can also attend Con Leche, an art exhibition including works by the Larsen family (Patricia, Janaki, Klee) and myself that will open the following week.

On Saturday, May 5th I will at Bellevue Art & Frame in Bellevue, Washington, just outside of Seattle. Join me for an afternoon of art from 12-2pm. Contributing artists Donna Watson and Leslie Avon Miller will be participating with me in an artist panel and Q & A. All three of us will also be sharing our artwork and an art demo. This will be followed by a book signing with Donna and Leslie, as well as with Alicia Caudel, Robert Stockton, Lisa JonesMoore, and Delorse Lovelady -- all of whom will be in attendance and are contributors to the book.

The Week Ahead

I will be heading west this week to continue promoting and celebrating the release of my book The Pulse of Mixed Media. I have been enjoying my travels so much in part because I have been able to meet so many of the contributing artists and other blogging friends. Hoping that if YOU are in the areas I will be visiting, I can add YOU to the list of people I have actually met in real life.

On Thursday, April 26th from 7 to 9pm, join me for a launch party, book signing, and live jazz at Momo Lomo in Fort Collins, CO.  Also attending will be a number of contributing artists from Colorado, including Sarah Fishburn and Lisa Hoffman.
On Saturday, April 28th, I will be in Boulder, CO at Two Hands Paperie. I will be moderating an artist panel with local contributing artists Lisa Hoffman, Sarah Fishburn, Fran Meneley and Marie Danti. The panel members will discuss their contributions to the book, answer audience questions, show samples of their artwork, share their personal creative process, and sign copies of the book. The panel is free and open to the public. The event runs from 10:30am to 12:00pm.

Next week I will be heading to the Pacific Northwest and will be making stops in Bellevue, WA (right outside of Seattle) and Vancouver, BC in Canada. You can read more about these events here.
