Rick Owens Furniture Unveils “BACKSTAGE” at Salon 94 Design

Salon 94 Design proudly presents “BACKSTAGE,” a captivating exhibition showcasing the latest creations from Rick Owens Furniture. This innovative collection, meticulously produced by Owens’ partner Michèle Lamy, pushes the boundaries of furniture design with its use of rare and unexpected materials.

The exhibition is a testament to Owens’ distinctive dark, minimalist aesthetic, which has become his signature since he first began crafting bespoke furniture for his bunker-style Los Angeles loft. Drawing inspiration from the fluid shapes found in nature, the sculptural works of Constantin Brâncuși, and the dynamic contours of California skate parks, each piece in the collection tells a story of artistic vision and masterful craftsmanship.

Lamy’s exceptional talent for sourcing and repurposing unique materials takes center stage in this exhibition. From porphyry and bois de marais (swamp wood) to more conventional elements like plywood and white marble, the furniture pieces showcase an expanding vocabulary of textures and forms. Perhaps most intriguing is Lamy’s global scavenging approach, which has led her from European swamps to Vatican stone quarries, and even to local butcher shops in search of bones – all in pursuit of the perfect materials.

A highlight of “BACKSTAGE” is the debut of the Tech Glade, an evolution of the original modular Glade structure. This innovative design, developed in collaboration with Travis Scott for his CIRCUS MAXIMUS world tour, represents a fusion of functionality and avant-garde aesthetics. Personally overseen by Lamy, in partnership with the Rick Owens Furniture atelier and Xtine Dallas, the Tech Glade is a 10-piece modular marvel. It seamlessly integrates a large-screen TV space, a recording studio, and a cocoon-like sofa beneath a brooding canopy, complete with practical features like phone-charging stations.

This exhibition marks another milestone in Salon 94 Design’s decade-long collaboration with Rick Owens Furniture. From their first show at the flagship space on 94th Street to this current presentation at the gallery’s new headquarters, the partnership continues to evolve and inspire. Art enthusiasts and design aficionados alike will find themselves immersed in a world where furniture transcends its utilitarian purpose to become a form of sculptural art.

As you wander through the exhibition, you’ll feel the raw energy and creative vision that defines Rick Owens’ work. Each piece challenges conventional notions of furniture design, inviting viewers to reconsider the boundaries between art, functionality, and lived experience.

“BACKSTAGE” runs from January 9 to February 15, 2025, at Salon 94 Design in New York, alongside concurrent shows from Takuro Kuwata and Miles Greenberg.

Wadi AlFann presents James Turrell in AlUla

In a groundbreaking fusion of art and nature, Wadi AlFann is set to showcase the mesmerizing work of James Turrell, a pioneer in the Light and Space art movement. This extraordinary exhibition promises to immerse visitors in a world where light becomes tangible and perception is challenged.

Curated by Michael Govan, CEO of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the exhibition offers an unparalleled journey through Turrell’s artistic legacy. Visitors will encounter a selection of the artist’s most captivating light installations, each a testament to his mastery of manipulating light and space.

At the heart of the exhibition lies a preview of Turrell’s ambitious Wadi AlFann commission. Through detailed renders, plans, and a constellation map, attendees will glimpse the artist’s vision for a monumental sequence of chambers within the canyon floor. This forthcoming installation promises to be a sensorial marvel, inviting explorers to navigate through tunnels and stairs, experiencing the “thingness of light” in dialogue with the natural landscape.

The exhibition features four remarkable works that showcase Turrell’s evolution as an artist. “Alta” (1968), one of his earliest pieces, transforms a dim corner into a luminous pyramid of pink-violet light, creating an illusion of solid planes. In stark contrast, “Jubilee, Circular Glass” (2021) presents a hypnotic display of mutating colors on a circular glass screen, seamlessly transitioning from dazzling crimson to icy blue.

Visitors will also encounter a piece from Turrell’s Magnatron series, evoking nostalgic memories of flickering television lights glimpsed through neighboring windows. Additionally, a work from his Hologram series will be on display, revealing a luminous geometric shape that appears to float in space, challenging our perceptions of reality.

This exhibition is more than a showcase of art; it’s a prelude to the ambitious Wadi AlFann project, which aims to transform AlUla into a global cultural destination. Turrell joins a prestigious group of international artists, including Manal AlDowayan, Agnes Denes, Michael Heizer, and Ahmed Mater, who are creating monumental, site-specific works in this extraordinary desert landscape.

Set against the backdrop of AlUla’s ancient city, the exhibition is part of the larger AlUla Arts Festival, offering visitors an immersive journey through art, design, and creative workshops. It’s a unique opportunity to experience the intersection of contemporary art and timeless landscape, where light becomes a medium for exploring the very nature of perception.

The James Turrell exhibition at Wadi AlFann will run from 16 January until 19 April 2025, inviting art enthusiasts and curious minds alike to experience the transformative power of light and space in the heart of AlUla.

Hassan Sharif’s “Gathering” Transforms Everyday Objects into Poetic Art

In a captivating exploration of materiality and meaning, Alexander Gray Associates in New York presents “Gathering,” a remarkable exhibition featuring the works of Hassan Sharif, a pioneering figure in Middle Eastern conceptual art. This showcase offers a profound glimpse into Sharif’s innovative Objects series, where the mundane transforms into the extraordinary.

Sharif’s monumental sculptures dominate the gallery space, each piece a testament to his unique artistic vision. These works, created during the artist’s final years, breathe new life into everyday materials, imbuing them with an unexpected poetic sensibility. Sharif’s hands-on assembly process, which he likened to weaving, serves as a contemporary interpretation of traditional handicraft, bridging the gap between past and present.

The Objects series, initiated in 1982, reflects the rapid economic growth and demographic transformation of the United Arab Emirates during Sharif’s lifetime. However, rather than explicitly critiquing or celebrating these changes, Sharif’s work offers a nuanced perspective. He adapts longstanding traditions to reflect the new material culture of the UAE, inviting viewers to rediscover the reality of everyday life through a fresh lens.

Hassan Sharif, 555Hassan Sharif, 555, 2016, Aluminum plates and copper wire. Installation view in Hassan Sharif: I Am The Single Work Artist, Malmö Konsthall, Sweden, 2020. Photo: Helene Toresdotter

“Gathering” showcases the impressive range of materials present in the Objects series. In “Weave 4” (2013), Sharif braids black rubber and white electrical wire into a frenetic tapestry, creating a visual symphony of industrial elements. “555” (2016) presents a sprawling sculptural system composed of one thousand aluminum food service pans, bent and bound together with copper wire. Perhaps most striking is “Hats” (2016), where hundreds of circular-brimmed sun hats are tightly bound into a weighty spherical mass, suspended from the ceiling like a peculiar celestial body.

In each of these works, Sharif deliberately strips away the utility of the objects, transforming them into pure art. As he explained, “I take a product to my studio and the first thing I do is remove its use… I cancel its usefulness. Then I add another material to it, so it becomes a work of art; an object.” This process of deconstruction and reconstruction challenges our perceptions of value and functionality in the modern world.

Sharif’s approach extended beyond sculpture to traditional media like drawing and painting. His geometric compositions, devised according to chance, explore the boundaries of creative expression while subtly critiquing institutions and social systems. This egalitarian outlook informed his role as a mentor to younger generations of artists in the Gulf region, fostering a vibrant creative community through his hybrid studio/salon, The Flying House.

The exhibition “Gathering” not only celebrates Sharif’s artistic legacy but also highlights the enduring relevance of his work. In an era of rapid globalization and technological advancement, Sharif’s art serves as a poignant reminder of the beauty and complexity inherent in the everyday objects that surround us. It challenges us to look beyond the surface, to find meaning and connection in the most unexpected places.

As visitors wander through the exhibition, they are invited to engage with Sharif’s vision of a world where art transcends boundaries of nationality, partisanship, and ego. His works stand as a testament to the power of creativity to foster cultural dialogue and embrace human development in all its facets.

Hassan Sharif: “Gathering” opens on Saturday, January 11, with a reception from 5:00–7:00 PM at Alexander Gray Associates, New York.

“Emilia Pérez”: A Bold Symphony of Reality and Fantasy

“Emilia Pérez” is a musical drama movie written and directed by Jacques Audiard. It stars Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, and Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz. It is based on the novel by Boris Razon.

In the ever-evolving landscape of cinema, “Emilia Pérez” emerges as a daring opus that defies conventional categorization. Director Jacques Audiard’s latest creation is a cinematic cocktail that blends the whimsy of musicals with the grit of social realism, resulting in a film that’s as thought-provoking as it is entertaining.

At its core, “Emilia Pérez” tells the story of a drug lord’s audacious plan to escape his past: gender reassignment surgery and a faked death. It’s a premise that could easily veer into the realm of the absurd, but Audiard’s deft touch transforms it into a poignant exploration of identity, redemption, and the human cost of Mexico’s drug wars.

The film’s most striking feature is its seamless integration of musical numbers into a narrative steeped in harsh realities. These aren’t your typical Broadway-style interludes; instead, they serve as emotional punctuation marks, amplifying the characters’ inner turmoil and dreams. It’s a risky artistic choice that pays off handsomely, creating moments of surreal beauty amidst the chaos of the characters’ lives.

Emilia PérezEmilia Pérez

Selena Gomez delivers a career-defining performance as the drug lord’s wife, bringing depth and nuance to a role that could have easily fallen into stereotype. Her journey from complicity to activism forms the emotional backbone of the film, and Gomez navigates this arc with impressive subtlety.

Audiard’s direction is nothing short of masterful. He orchestrates the film’s disparate elements – the gritty realism, the musical flights of fancy, the social commentary – into a cohesive whole that never feels forced or disjointed. The cinematography is equally impressive, with vivid, color-saturated musical sequences contrasting sharply with the muted tones of the “real world” scenes.

“Emilia Pérez” doesn’t shy away from addressing Mexico’s ongoing crisis of disappearances linked to drug cartel violence. By framing this issue through the lens of a reformed criminal’s redemption, the film offers a unique perspective on the cyclical nature of violence and the possibility of change.

While the film’s unconventional approach may not resonate with all viewers, it’s undeniably a bold and original work. In an era where franchise fatigue and formulaic storytelling often dominate the box office, “Emilia Pérez” stands out as a refreshing reminder of cinema’s power to challenge, provoke, and inspire.

As we navigate a post-pandemic film landscape, where the industry grapples with changing viewer habits and the rise of streaming, “Emilia Pérez” makes a compelling case for the enduring magic of the theatrical experience. It’s a film that demands to be seen on the big screen, where its visual and auditory artistry can be fully appreciated.

“Emilia Pérez” is more than just a movie; it’s a cinematic event that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in filmmaking. It triumphs not in spite of its eccentricities, but because of them. In blending genres, tones, and themes with such audacity and skill, Audiard has created a work that will likely be discussed, debated, and celebrated.

“Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action”: Netflix Digs Up TV’s Trashy Past with Jerry Springer Documentary

“Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action” is a Netflix docuseries about Jerry Springer directed by Luke Sewell.

Netflix is set to release “Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action”, a documentary that delves into the controversial world of one of America’s most infamous talk shows. The film promises to pull back the curtain on “The Jerry Springer Show”, a program that redefined the boundaries of daytime television and left an indelible mark on pop culture.

Jerry Springer, a former politician turned TV host, became a household name in the 1990s with his eponymous show. What began as a serious talk show quickly devolved into a circus of outrageous guests, shocking revelations, and on-stage brawls. The documentary explores how Springer and his team, particularly executive producer Richard Dominick, crafted a formula that prioritized spectacle over substance.

Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action - NetflixJerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action – Netflix

“Fights, Camera, Action” takes viewers on a journey from the show’s inception in Chicago to its eventual status as the poster child for “trash TV”. Through interviews with former producers, including Dominick himself, the film examines the behind-the-scenes machinations that turned family disputes, infidelity, and bizarre love triangles into ratings gold. Notably absent from the documentary is Springer himself, who passed away in 2023, leaving a void in the narrative that the filmmakers attempt to fill with archival footage and secondhand accounts.

The documentary doesn’t shy away from the controversies that dogged “The Jerry Springer Show” throughout its run. From accusations of exploiting vulnerable guests to concerns about the show’s impact on public discourse, “Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action” presents a warts-and-all portrait of a cultural phenomenon that was both reviled and revered.

Perhaps the most compelling aspect of the film is its exploration of the show’s production team. These behind-the-scenes players emerge as the true architects of chaos, willing to push ethical boundaries in pursuit of higher ratings. Their stories provide insight into the cutthroat world of 1990s television, where shock value reigned supreme and the line between reality and performance became increasingly blurred.

“Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action” serves as both a time capsule of a bygone era in television and a cautionary tale about the power of media to shape public tastes. While it may not break new ground in terms of documentary filmmaking, it offers a fascinating glimpse into a show that, for better or worse, changed the face of American television.

As streaming services continue to mine nostalgia for content, this documentary stands as a reminder of how far TV has come – and how some of its baser instincts remain unchanged. For those who lived through the Springer era, it’s a trip down a memory lane paved with chair-throwing and beep-laden shouting matches. For younger viewers, it’s a crash course in the evolution of reality TV and the ethical quandaries it continues to pose.

Netflix’s “Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action” may not elevate its subject to high art, but it offers a compelling look at a show that knew exactly what it was – and made no apologies for it. In doing so, it holds up a mirror to our own viewing habits and the culture that shaped them, leaving us to wonder if we’ve really progressed or if we’re still just chasing the next outrageous moment.

The Breakthrough – Swedish Crime Drama Delves Deep into Society’s Shadows

“The Breakthrough” is a Swedish series directed by Lisa Siwe, and starring Peter Eggers, Mattias Nordkvist, and Jessica Liedberg.

Netflix welcomes a new addition to its international crime drama lineup with the arrival of a compelling Swedish series based on the book by Anna Bodin and Peter Sjölund. This four-part investigation unfolds over 16 years, offering viewers a nuanced exploration of a double homicide that sends shockwaves through a small community.

The story begins with a chilling premise: a child and a woman who tried to help are murdered one morning. This tragic event sparks a prolonged investigation that spans more than a decade and a half, unraveling the complex tapestry of a town’s social fabric.

The Breakthrough - NetflixThe Breakthrough – Netflix

What sets this series apart is its commitment to a sociological examination of crime. Rather than relying on Hollywood-style plot twists and constant surprises, the narrative follows a logical, structured approach to the investigation. The suspense builds organically, avoiding sensationalism in favor of a more grounded, realistic portrayal of police work and community dynamics.

The show’s creators have crafted a narrative that goes beyond the whodunit aspect, delving into the ‘why’ of the crime. By exploring the social circumstances surrounding the murders, the series offers a thought-provoking look at the factors that can lead individuals to commit heinous acts. It’s not just about the detectives or the crime itself; it’s an analysis of an entire community, including local law enforcement, the press, and the intricate relationships between neighbors.

Visually, the series embodies the classic Swedish television production style. The pacing is deliberate, allowing for deep character exploration and thoughtful scene composition. There’s a notable absence of flashy editing techniques, even in depicting the crime itself. Instead, the everyday, almost mundane presentation of events serves to heighten the realism and impact of the story.

This approach to storytelling may not revolutionize the crime drama genre, but it certainly reinforces the strengths of Nordic noir. The series offers a window into Swedish society, exposing the cracks in what might appear to be a flawless social structure. It’s a reminder that beneath the surface of any community, complex human dramas unfold, shaped by the intricate interplay of individual choices and societal pressures.

While the series may not appeal to those seeking fast-paced action or constant plot twists, it provides a rich, layered experience for viewers interested in a more contemplative approach to crime storytelling. It’s a series that demands attention and rewards patience, offering insights that linger long after the final credits roll.

Miles Greenberg Unveils Sculptural Mastery in “Desire Path” at Salon 94

Salon 94 is set to showcase a groundbreaking exhibition that marks a significant milestone in the career of rising artist Miles Greenberg. “Desire Path”, Greenberg’s first US solo show dedicated solely to his sculptural practice, promises to captivate audiences with its innovative approach to marble sculpture and digital technology.

Born in 1997 in Montreal, Canada, Miles Greenberg has quickly established himself as a multidisciplinary artist of note. With a decade-long career spanning Beijing, Paris, and now New York, Greenberg’s work has consistently pushed the boundaries between performance art and sculptural forms. This exhibition at Salon 94 represents not only his debut with the gallery but also a pivotal moment in his artistic journey.

At the heart of “Desire Path” are Greenberg’s mesmerizing figurative sculptures crafted from Carrara marble. These pieces are born from a fascinating fusion of traditional sculpting techniques and cutting-edge digital technology. Greenberg employs a unique process that begins with digitally mapping bodies in motion, captured during his durational performance piece “Fountain II,” which debuted at New York’s Pace Gallery in 2023.

The artist’s innovative approach to sculpture is evident in his unconventional use of 3D scanning technology. Greenberg hacks his hand-held scanner to reduce its self-correction capabilities, allowing for a more raw and organic capture of movement. This digital data is then transformed into physical form through machine carving of pink, black, and white marble blocks, with each piece meticulously hand-finished by the artist himself.

The result is a collection of otherworldly sculptures that seem to materialize from Greenberg’s performance work. Viewers will encounter figures locked in embrace, distorted chests, and fragmented body parts that challenge our perception of form and movement. Adding to the visual intrigue are rivulets of quartz that trace down the surfaces, evoking the imagery of tears or flowing blood.

Complementing the marble sculptures are new video-based works, including 9-hour long recordings of Greenberg’s recent performances. These include “SEBASTIAN” (2023), which debuted at the 60th Biennale Arte in Venice, and “RESPAWN” (2024) from the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto. These video pieces offer insight into Greenberg’s rigorous and ritualistic methodology, emphasizing the artist’s focus on slowness and the decay of form to heighten audience sensitivity.

“Desire Path” represents a significant leap in Greenberg’s artistic practice, marking the first time he has worked at this scale. The exhibition was produced at Monumental Labs in Mount Vernon, showcasing the artist’s continued fascination with marble as both a historical medium and a contemporary canvas for exploring the possibilities of 3D imaging technology.

Miles Greenberg’s “Desire Path” is more than just an exhibition; it’s an immersive experience that invites viewers to explore the intersection of performance, sculpture, and digital art. By blending classical romanticism with modern architectural rigor and a nuanced understanding of bodily energy, Greenberg creates a unique artistic language that speaks to both the past and the future of sculptural practice.

Art enthusiasts and curious minds alike are invited to experience this groundbreaking exhibition at Salon 94. “Desire Path” not only showcases Greenberg’s exceptional talent but also offers a glimpse into the evolving landscape of contemporary sculpture.

The exhibition “Desire Path” by Miles Greenberg will be on view at Salon 94 from January 9, 2025, to February 22, 2025.
