Ronja the Robber’s Daughter (2024), a Medieval Adventure Series for Youth on Netflix

Ronja the Robber’s Daughter is a Swedish series directed by Lisa James Larsson and starring Kerstin Linden.

If you’re a fan of medieval adventure shows, featuring taverns, journeys, many horses, and natural forces shaping the plot, Netflix brings us “Ronja the Robber’s Daughter”, a story about a special girl living in a special time.

“Ronja the Robber’s Daughter” is a simple adventure series, leaning more towards establishing a sense of place and character than incorporating magic and fantasy due to budget restrictions, but it’s a pleasant series that entertains without causing harm to anyone.

Plot

This is the story of Ronja, a girl born as the hope of a Scandinavian band of thieves where she’s unique. As she grows up, she’s faced with the forest and the dangers that its magic and allure pose to her.

Ronja the Robber's DaughterRonja the Robber’s DaughterAbout the Series

The series, directed by Lisa James Larsson, somewhat mirrors the medieval aesthetic of “Game of Thrones” but doesn’t hold any high aims like the HBO series. “Ronja the Robber’s Daughter” is primarily a straightforward adventure series that can’t offer grand battles or visually stunning spectacles.

“Ronja the Robber’s Daughter” is entertaining, simple, and very enjoyable, making it a perfect series for the whole family. This modest Swedish production spans six episodes.

By mentioning it’s for the whole family, we especially mean it is catered towards children, for whom this pleasant adventure series, where the villains are scary but not terrifying, is designed.

It’s based on a novel by Astrid Lindgren, and just to give you a heads up, this first season doesn’t cover the entire story nor does it wrap up with a neat and tidy ending.

Ronja the Robber's DaughterRonja the Robber’s DaughterOur Opinion

“Ronja the Robber’s Daughter” is a pleasant, fun, friendly, and humble series to spend some time with. If you’re looking for something more aesthetic, intricate, or developed, this might not be your cup of tea. However, it’s a series especially designed for younger viewers that without displeasing the older ones, delivers what it promises.

Whether it promises a lot… or not.

Paolo Pedroni: Altered Visions | Dorothy Circus Gallery London

At DCG London, with an opening on Friday, April 12th, the solo exhibition by Italian artist Paolo Pedroni, Altered Vision who [image error]is making his UK debut after two participations at Art Taipei that conquered the Asian market and led the artist to continuous sell-outs, will open.

Pedroni’s new and visionary collection consists of a series of eleven canvas paintings that, through the chromatic metaphor of saturation, evoke the concept of accumulation as synonymous with superfluity, using color to delineate the essential from the excessive.

Each of these canvases, imbued with a sweet pop imagery and characterized by an apparently reassuring sugary palette, features a complete chromatic spectrum in which Barbie pink hues alternate with desaturated color nuances that blend and confuse in a context dense with objects and references to childhood, icons of contemporary consumerism.

In this vortex of close-ups on desires, the artist emphasizes the subtle, almost imperceptible contrast between what vibrates and what seems to intrusively infiltrate, seeking to confuse the gaze.

The eye, the symbol that recurs in art of all times, becomes in this pictorial narrative, the mirror of a weakness and of that confused soul that is no longer able to navigate its will and loses its course in the excess of stimuli it receives.

Paolo Pedroni: Altered VisionsPaolo Pedroni Baby Kusama Oil on canvas 60 x 60 cm 2023

The Artist invites us to reflect and to take a step back, closing our eyes on this social reality we are going through, to search for the distilled essence of life that belongs to us. It is our eyes that once again receive the impulse, but it is the invitation of Art this time to provoke us, with its intellectual push that aims to make us feel the difference between real desire and artificial desire.

In this deliberate aesthetic choice where the useless fades, feelings remain afloat, portrayed by Pedroni as lively creatures with bright, sparkling eyes, seeking our attention. Are they perhaps our children, our friends, our partners?

Looking at us in the expectation that we close those digital windows and turn our gaze to what really matters? Thanks to the characteristic soft hyperrealism of Pedroni’s painting, the paradox of the present takes shape, the emptiness of too much, the peak of a well-being that has become existential malaise, digital bulimia, the apex of the algorithm of sadness. But in this distinct union of pop culture and social commentary, the present wriggles free, and its portrait, balanced between nostalgia and hope, in a weave of altered perceptions where the spiritual vision prevails, setting aside the superfluous, leaving a pure tableau focused on what is colorfully important.

Paolo Pedroni, who will be present at the vernissage, is to date one of the very few Italian artists of Dorothy Circus, which we represent with immense pride.

With the Altered Vision series, Pedroni demonstrates an incomparable ability to capture an era, its contradictions, its history, and its strength.

A preview of the works will be shared via email with collectors on April 6th at 4:00 AM GMT.

Altered Vision by Paolo Pedroni is part of our Annual Program, “Pursuing Harmony: the Artistic Odyssey of 2024”. Please find our concept here below:

“After a beautiful 2023 dedicated to the freedom of expression, in shaping our 2024 exhibition program, continuing to draw inspiration from numerology, we have chosen to communicate a complex mosaic of values embodied by the number 24. We explore the themes of family, companionship, and self-security as expressions of the concept of Harmony.

The programming opens with a dual show at our Rome venue, featuring the works of the French sculptor Clementine Bal and the young talent, the Korean Yu Gyeong Cheon. They embrace the theme of family with the sophistication and poetry typical of the feminine lenguage, offering diverse perspectives on relationships and the intricate threads that bind us. Each artwork tells the story of connection, inviting viewers to reflect on their own experiences and the universal ties that unite us all. Following is the eagerly awaited solo show by the impressionist genius with incomparable evocative talent, Joe Sorren. A master of sublimating reality, he brings to London a collection of works that open a space where imagination knows no bounds.

The boundless imagination of contemporary surrealism continues the narrative, exploring the power of companionship as a driving force behind creativity and collaboration. This is evident in the duo show of Peca and Jesus Aguado, exploring the synergy between their distinct artistic voices, as well as in Paolo Pedroni‘s solo show in London. Self-affirmation and self-security emerge from the painterly exploration of the two Anglo-Saxons, London-based Ben Ashton and New Yorker Matthew Grabelsky. This theme is equally present in the joint exhibition of Liz Florez from Cuba, in comparison with the street artist Miss Van, creating a spectacle of two strong female personalities with rich and original vocabularies. Spring opens with solo exhibitions by Luke Chueh and Kukula in London, and the joint exhibition of Blic and Erkut Terliksiz in Rome.

This paves the way for the debut talent of Japanese realism, Kana Tsumura, who will exhibit in London in a Focus show dedicated to her Still Life. Dedicated to the depths of introspection and the search for Harmony, shared by our talents from around the world, the theme of the year further unfolds through the magical suggestions of Mr. Sasquatch and Farley del Rosario, who, along with Thomas Ascott, Leixiao Han, and Wang Jin Bo, will conclude the programming at DCG in Rome. In London, after the presentation of the Thai artist Natepool and the Filipino Rene Cuvos, we welcome back Jonathan Viner. He returns to celebrate with us the end of an exhibition year where we interweave our perceptions into the fabric of each exhibition. A year of art and experience that embodies the essence of 24: a year that we wish for everyone to be one of unity, understanding, and growth.”

Bethany Collins: Years | Alexander Gray Associates, Germantown

Alexander Gray Associates, Germantown presents Bethany Collins: Years, an exhibition of recent work by the artist that maps the interconnection between loss and identity. Building on Collins’s first exhibition with the Gallery in 2023, this focused presentation foregrounds her Years series—black, blind embossed prints of public notices placed by formerly enslaved individuals seeking loved ones.

The black paper used in these works obfuscates the notices’ text, and, by extension, the missing family they describe. In this way, the dark, textured surfaces of prints like Years, 1865 (The Black Republican) (2023) force viewers to grapple with illegibility and the unknown—that which remains lost. Imbuing words with absence, Collins’s Years transforms the act of reading into endless searching—a metamorphosis that echoes the subtext of the notices, themselves, as well as the actions of the men and women who first placed them.

Literalizing the connection between language and loss, the 2023 artist book The Battle Hymn of the Republic: A Hymnal physically excises paper from its binding until all that remains is, in the artist’s words, “the dust of language.” The book collates one hundred different versions of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” a patriotic Union song written in the midst of the American Civil War, lasering out the shared score and leaving a charred corpus to past (in)cohesion. “[Erasure] makes me feel I can control a text that feels out of my hands,” Collins explains. “I feel a physical mastering of language. By deciding what’s legible, I’m dragging out the meaning already there.” As such, Collins’s Southern Review turns to erasure as a method for revealing meaning. Using charcoal to obscure the text of the venerable literary journal, the artist translates the language of redaction into a formalist play of black and white—a gesture that makes visible the ways in which race is embedded in its pages.

Collins ultimately uses language—and its absence—as a charged lens through which to critically examine history, uncovering hidden structures and identities. Her works collapse past and present, fracturing texts to rewrite American narratives. Collins concludes, “… struggling with the duality of language—its potential and inevitable failure to make sense of the world—remains the basis for my making.”

Collins’s work is the subject of a solo exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum, WA (2024), in recognition of her having won the museum’s Gwendolyn and Jacob Lawrence Prize (2023). Her work is also included in the triennial the future is present, the harbinger is home, Prospect.6, New Orleans, LA (2024). Other recent one-person exhibitions include Bethany Collins: Accord, Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Arts, Auburn, AL (2023); America: A Hymnal, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, AK (2021); Chorus, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, MO (2019); and Benediction, The University of Kentucky Art Museum, Lexington, KY (2019). Other group exhibitions include Monochrome Multitudes, Smart Museum of Art, The University of Chicago, IL (2022); The Dirty South: Contemporary Art, Material Culture, and the Sonic Impulse, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, VA (2021), traveled to Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, TX (2021), Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, AR (2022), and Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, CO (2022); and Jacob Lawrence: The American Struggle, Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, MA (2020), traveled to Seattle Art Museum, WA (2021) and The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C. (2021), among others. Collins’s work is represented in the collections of The Art Institute of Chicago, IL; Birmingham Museum of Art, AL; High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA; The Morgan Library & Museum, New York, NY; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Museum, Philadelphia, PA; Saint Louis Art Museum, MO; Smart Museum of Art, The University of Chicago, IL; Speed Art Museum, Louisville, KY; and The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY, among others. She is the recipient of many awards and grants, including the Joan Mitchell Fellowship (2022); Lucas Artist Fellowship, Montalvo Arts Center, Saratoga, CA (2019); Artadia Award, Chicago, IL and Atlanta, GA (2019 and 2014); Illinois Arts Council Artist Fellowship, Chicago, IL (2019); Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant, New York, NY (2018); and The Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2015). Testament: The Story of Moses, Netflix Docuseries retelling the famed biblical prophet’s tale

Testament: The Story of Moses is a docudrama series narrated by Charles Dances, starring Clarke Peters and Avi Azulay. It is directed by Benjamin Ross.

It was about two weeks ago that we had the opportunity to watch another docudrama, that time it was about relativity, the atomic bomb, and Albert Einstein. Now, threatening to become a tradition, Netflix brings us the story of Moses, dramatized and with Charles Dance’s voice as the narrator.

“Testament: The Story of Moses” is somewhat like those old documentaries we would watch in school to keep us all happy: The teacher didn’t have to speak, and no matter how boring the documentary was, it was more entertaining than the teacher’s lecture, thereby making us all a bit happier.

We won’t discover many new things here, but the documentary features testimonies from historians and theologians of the three religions where Moses is mentioned: Judaism, Islam, and Christianity all recognize him as a prophet.

If you don’t know what “monolatry” means, it might be the right time to find out, or perhaps you might want to review Moses’s story one more time or, if you are young, learn what it’s about.

In cinematic terms: Nothing that’s going to win any Oscars, at least not for aesthetic reasons.

He is best known for his roles in various films and television shows, including his portrayal of Tywin Lannister in the popular HBO series Game of Thrones. Dance has also appeared in notable films such as Alien 3, The Imitation Game, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. In addition to his acting career, he has also directed films and received critical acclaim for his work.

The Believers (2024) Thai Series on Netflix: Three young individuals start a rather unique business: a Buddhist temple

The Believers is a Thai series directed by Wattanapong Wongwan starring Teeradon Supapunpinyo, Achiraya Nitibhon and Pachara Chirathivat.

Netflix brings us a series today that at least has a curious plot: three young individuals decide to switch their crypto businesses for religion, setting up a Buddhist temple to be able to pay off their substantial debts.

“The Believers” is a series that blends religion, drama, friendship, and business to deliver a show that, while not grabbing your attention with its pace or being a breath-holding thriller, entertains with its slow rhythm and its mix of entrepreneurship movie with a sprinkle of comedy and drama.

The BelieversThe BelieversAbout the series “The Believers”

Don’t expect a Hollywood-style cheeky story because it’s anything but: it’s a slow-paced, even reflective drama about three guys who start a business revolving around the Buddhist religion and who try in some way to make it work with more modern systems.

Yes, in Hollywood’s hands, it would have made for a comedy, or maybe a fast-paced thriller full of satire, but “The Believers” does not want to make that kind of series and instead, it offers a whole view of the religion that, while not tragic, is dramatic in terms of the story it tells and narrated with much pause, it is entertaining, although viewers will have to take things slow (we’re warning you).

Technically, it’s a good series, but it doesn’t catch your attention or impress with its shots or the strength of its images, almost becoming an intimate story of these characters.

Without recommending it, it’s original due to its slow, paused, and even reflective treatment.

Enjoy.

No Pressure (2024) – A Netflix Film: At the Heart of Tradition

No Pressure is a Polish comedy starring Anna Szymańczyk, Anna Seniuk, Mateusz Janicki and Artur Barciś. It is directed by Bartosz Prokopowicz.

Ever watched a film about a city dweller who rediscovers their life when they return to their hometown? Even if your job has nothing to do with cinema, you’ve likely seen a few and, it’s possible, another one might seem repetitive to you.

Or maybe not, after all, Christmas happens every year and it seems to be quite a hit.

No PressureNo PressurePlot

A city girl returns to her hometown to attend her grandmother’s funeral. Everything goes awry when she finds out her grandmother isn’t dead, and it’s all a ruse to get her to take over the family farm full of many, many animals.

About the movie

It probably sounds familiar: the girl, as soon as she arrives at the village, meets a handsome guy who, at first, doesn’t impress her much but, as the scenes progress, that beautiful, rural feeling called love starts to bloom in her heart.

Then of course, there are the animals: newborn goats, puppies, ducks, and delightful people with simple customs who take life easy.

Do you think our heroine will manage to adapt to her new farm life? Well, perhaps all this suspense might give you a heart attack (or not), but what’s certain is that “No Pressure” is a perfect movie for those who value rural life over the hustle of a big city, and believe that, no matter how much things change, not even artificial intelligence can change their lives, with solid traditions passed down from parents to children.

“No Pressure” is a simple movie, the kind that writes itself, so filled with clichés and such scant character development that it’s not worth even considering. A movie that is exactly as it should be, born simply because now was the time for a rural movie like this, and these movies are cost-effective and profitable.

It doesn’t have to be original, it can’t be original because if the tradition is changed, the film might be too sophisticated. It is, above all, a movie aimed to appeal to those who consider sophistication somewhat stupid.

There is an audience for everything, and today, on this beautiful Wednesday, Netflix brings us this movie that, if anything, is not very sophisticated.

But it’s full of love for tradition and nature, which is not bad at all.

Enjoy!
