An Incredibly Entertaining Korean Science Fiction Series on Netflix: ‘Parasyte: The Grey’ (2024)

Parasyte: The Grey is a new Korean science fiction series created by Yeon Sang-ho and starring Jeon So-nee, Koo Kyo-hwan and Lee Jung-hyun.

If you are a fan of both science fiction and comic books, “Parasyte: The Grey” is a perfect blend that ticks all the boxes: thrilling action, a futuristically absurd storyline, and heaps of entertainment.

This series knows how strikingly unique its concept is and capitalizes on that uniqueness, constantly offering impactful scenes.

Moreover, it boasts high-quality cinematography and this paradoxically Hollywood-style action that now seems more characteristic of the Korean industry while Hollywood seems to have forgotten it.

Storyline

A parasite has invaded Earth, turning some humans into monsters.

A girl, who manages to keep her mind in control, becomes a crucial player in a game where the parasites have organized themselves and a special unit tries to hunt them down and study them to end the threat.

About the series

This is an extremely fun series where, interestingly, the girl communicates with her own parasite, which only takes control of her body for about fifteen minutes each day. They protect each other and try to survive in this dystopia of monsters that the Korean industry seems to excel in.

“Parasyte: The Grey” is rapid-paced and brimming with action sequences, just as fans desire. It’s a series that understands its strength lies not in philosophical dialogues but diverts to emphasize what’s important, without forgetting an intriguing story that develops through well-defined and distinct characters.

It is a well-narrated, excellently directed series that has one thing clear from the start: we are here to watch a monster series and we are here to be awed by the sequences. It executes this perfectly, ensuring all narrative elements converge and everything is directed towards entertainment.

Modern and reminiscent of a video game, the series also skillfully imbues a cinematic storyline into this powerful ‘gaming’ pace.

It knows its audience and why they’re here: stay clear if you’re in for romantic comedies.

It’s a series with dark, almost tenebrous tones, extreme characters, situations are all pushed to the brink.

Our opinion

If Japan was at the forefront of entertainment in the 90s, it seems the Korean industry has taken the baton in this century, delivering excellent productions filled with action, exhilarating, and above all, highly entertaining.

“Parasyte: The Grey” is a prime example of how this industry is currently leading the entertainment industry.

“Scoop” Movie on Netflix: A distinctively British tale about media with an American twist

Scoop is a 2024 Netflix movie starring Gillian Anderson, Billie Piper, Rufus Sewell and Keeley Hawes. It is directed by Philip Martin and written by Peter Moffat.

Are you a fan of journalism? The film might not be an exact representation, it could all be a little romanticized, and perhaps more Hollywood than realistic. However, if you’re fascinated by the world of journalism, “Scoop” knows how to maintain a great cinematic pace and weave a story that captivates and thrills.

Yes, it’s idealized, but it’s also passionate and well-told.

ScoopScoopPlot

Jeffrey Epstein was accused in New York of child prostitution. Epstein committed suicide in prison, but his story didn’t end there. Across the Atlantic, the scandal touched the British Crown and one its highest representatives: Prince Andrew.

This is the story of how an interview with Prince Andrew was obtained, but above all, it’s the story of two female journalists who gave their all to get the information.

About the film

“Scoop” has been accused of not being entirely true to journalistic reality, especially for a film that deals with, precisely, journalistic truth and the difficulties in securing an interview. It’s all very romanticized and very Hollywood. No objections there, it’s completely true. However, it’s also true that, at the cinematic and script level, “Scoop” achieves all its goals.

“Scoop” has a star screenwriter, one of those who turns everything they touch into gold, Peter Moffat, and a director (Philip Martin), who is also a writer and an expert in communications and television. Together, they do great work. It may not be exceptional at the journalistic level, but it’s excellent at the cinematic level, managing to simplify a complicated journalistic story and make it accessible to the audience, providing us, above all, with great entertainment.

Everything is romanticized, everything happens almost at the pace of a video clip, but it’s electrifying. Both Gillian Anderson and Billy Piper deliver two amazing performances: dramatic and powerful. They perfectly embody these two women in the adversarial world of journalism, which is, in itself, bound to change.

“Scoop” is more a depiction of journalism than an investigation into Epstein’s case. It aims to be more entertaining than truthful and more about maintaining rhythm than getting caught up in the minutiae of the case.

As always, it will please some, and not so much others. For us, who don’t engage in that supposedly “serious” journalism, we loved its pace, performances, and editing.

But we’re not sensationalists, and “Scoop” impressed us, at the cinematic level, as a great film.

Enjoy it.

Gillian Anderson is a renowned actress known for her versatile roles in both television and film. She gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of FBI Special Agent Dana Scully in the popular TV series “The X-Files.”

From Satire to Misinformation: How the Internet Changed the World: ‘The Antisocial Network: Memes to Mayhem’ (2024) – Documentary on Netflix

4chan began as a copy of 2chan, a Japanese site that started as an anonymous bulletin board teeming with Otaku (おたく) – adults uninterested in the traditional and who, immersed in the world of the internet, could assume a different persona.

4chan was a raw and unrestricted platform where just about anything could be posted anonymously. It’s this platform where memes were born – a kind of graphic joke that someone created, tweaked, and then it went viral. All of this, it should be noted, happened without any form of censorship and literally mocking everything and anything.

This was the dawn of modern social media today.

About the Documentary

“The Antisocial Network: Memes to Mayhem ” takes us through how, from this website, collective anonymous identities (Anonymous) were confirmed, and these identities morphed into the drivers of chaos and the instigators of social upheavals such as the “Occupy Wall Street” movement, and also behind countless dark jokes that led to deaths, blackmail, and all the dangers that, unfortunately, we read about on the internet that terrify the older folks.

From these memes, from these anonymous jokes, 8chans emerged and the documentary delves into the QAnon movement and how, in a way that is quite hard to comprehend, this movement made its way to the Capitol, culminating in the infamous Washington riots.

“The Antisocial Network: Memes to Mayhem ” tells this story from the perspective of its creators, unveiling their true faces and the pseudonyms they used when they created 4chan.

“The Antisocial Network: Memes to Mayhem ” is an excellent documentary: it’s loaded with images, heaps of information, and also features the creators of the movement who are friendly, open, and narrate the events themselves. A documentary that essentially writes itself, but is done so efficiently and accurately, without passing judgment or taking sides despite the controversy of the subject matter.

Due to its relevance and the scope of its coverage, it’s nearly a must-watch for anyone who truly wants to understand what’s going on in the world beyond the regular newspapers which focus mainly on political figures.

It highlights the real happenings and how such an influential movement was created and how, behind the scenes, events naturally unfold far beyond what we are officially told.

Which is very little.

Its worth extends beyond just being a documentary.

Deadly Friend (1986) A Charming Horror Film by Wes Craven: Embracing that ’80s Scare (Already Touching on AI)

Deadly Friend es una película de terror de 1986 dirigida por Wes Craven protagonizada por Matthew Labyorteaux y Kristy Swanson.

Today, we want to bring back the memories of this Wes Craven film (the same director behind Nightmare on Elm Street) that wasn’t necessarily good, nor did it possess an exceptional cinematic treatment: a limited script, a bit of blood, and a lot of hype.

Yet, something grabbed our attention: the concept of Artificial Intelligence was there, already in 1986.

Plot

A boy moves with his mother to a new neighborhood. Some own dogs, others cats, and some, a robot with a somewhat rudimentary AI implanted into it.

As it turns out, a very blonde and friendly neighbor girl approaches the boy, but unfortunately, ends up dead in an accident involving her father. The boy, already having feelings for her, decides to revive her by implanting the CPU of the computer into her.

Deadly FriendDeadly FriendAbout the Movie

One of those films we watched many years ago and loved, but with the passage of time, has aged miserably: it’s not terrifying, it’s not well-executed, and it doesn’t have an exceptional script. But the idea of AI was there along with those chips which now seem revolutionary and are intended to be implanted into the brain.

The idea is not new and in the ’80s, Hollywood was already dreaming up similar concepts, this time channeling them into the horror genre with a bit of gore.

With time, it hasn’t become a classic, let alone a good film, but retains the charm of nostalgia and those ’80s horror films which we all loved and took somewhat lightly.

“Deadly Friend” is trashy, didn’t cost much money, and it’s one of those B movies that are highly profitable even though they are not blockbusters: it doesn’t have star actors or is the best from its director, but it was a good production that fulfilled its purpose of profitability.

One of those cases of low investment and high return that studios in the ’80s loved so much (and let’s be honest, also in the ’40s when not all films were so great).

Our Opinion

Somewhat shabby but funny and charming. A product aging with grace, and today, with AI already turned into a more terrifying reality, we can take it lightly.

Is There Room for Season 3? Exploring the Future of the Squid Game Universe

Squid Game was one of the biggest global phenomena when it was first released on Netflix. Of course, the timing of the show’s release would have significantly helped, but its premise truly caught the imagination of those who watched it.

Almost everybody you ask will have said that they know about the series and what it is comprised of, even if they haven’t watched it, thus highlighting its global reputation and appeal. For those unaware, it saw 100 people compete in child-like games to try and win lucrative sums of money, but featured deadly stakes.

As a result of its success, season 2 has been commissioned, but is there room for a third season? There does appear to be murmurs about the possibility of that happening, but is it too early to really know whether it will be worth doing?

The success of Squid Game

Season 2 of Squid Game started to be filmed in the summer of 2023, but it’s understood that fans of the show will have to wait until potentially the end of 2024 before they get new content regarding the hit TV show.

Indeed, it was no surprise that they decided to give the idea crafted by Hwang Dong-hyuk another release, given the figures that had been experienced. The show was the most-watched in more than 94 countries, having attracted figures of more than 142 million households that owned a Netflix membership, with it estimated more than 1.65 billion hours were streamed inside its first four weeks.

It became the #1 show for the streaming platform. Therefore, it’s no surprise that they want to take advantage of this and cash in on something that has proven to be incredibly successful. However, it seems there were initial doubts about a season 2 from the creator of Squid Game. He highlighted the “rigorous production process” but seems to have gotten over those concerns. He also revealed that there are talks for a third season. But, will it really work?

Should a Squid Game Season 3 be made?

Given the appeal that has been enjoyed recently, everything would suggest a third season would work, provided the next release isn’t a total flop. Squid Game has become a huge hit within popular culture, as there have been many things to have benefited from its creation.

There have been films and TV show spinoffs that have been created based on its premise, as well as YouTube videos from famous creators like Mr. Beast. Additionally, there have been games based on it, with the iGaming industry having created a new slot called “Squid Game One Lucky” by Light & Wonder. It can be found at the 32Red online casino UK, where they also boast a collection of other hit TV shows and films that have been turned into successful slot titles. The game features many aspects of the show within its theme and visuals, thus capturing the true essence of the format of the Korean show.

With this type of popularity being experienced and even greater exposure being achieved, there is every reason to suggest that there can be plenty more scope within the Squid Game universe for so much more to come.

Again, with that said, there are so many variables that need to be considered.

What could potentially stop Squid Game Season 3 from happening?

While it looks likely that we will get another installment of the show once the next season has been completed, there is still a lot that can happen between now and then that could prevent a third from potentially happening.

As we know, Hwang Dong-hyuk has already shown hesitancy regarding the production of further seasons. Although he appears to have overcome them so far, there is every chance that he may experience those emotions again, and not want to explore the franchise further. This could be something that happens if Season Two takes a lot longer or more effort than first expected.

Additionally, if Season Two doesn’t bring in the expected numbers or flops due to the content that is produced, this could have a damaging impact on whether a third season gets commissioned, as its viability can become questioned.

Of course, it’s all ifs and buts at the moment, but it does seem there are plans to bring a third season of Squid Game to Netflix. Hopefully, all goes according to plan, and we can enjoy at least two more seasons of incredible TV in the years to come from this ridiculous show!

Música (2024) – Rudy Mancuso’s movie on Prime Video: an entertaining Brazilian comedy around synesthesia

Música is a comedy written, starring and directed by Rudy Mancuso. With Camila Mendez and Gabriela Amerth.

A film that turns synesthesia into a hilarious comedy revolving around a boy who has synesthesia, a neurological phenomenon that makes him quite special.

This film is equally special due to its clear culprit, as Rudy Mancuso makes his directorial debut, and also takes on the lead role, writing a refreshing and original addition to Prime Video’s catalog.

About the film

The film begins in a peculiar manner. It’s almost as if we missed the first half-hour: a couple argues, and the seemingly absent-minded guy experiences a world full of sounds around him. She gets mildly upset and decides to end their relationship.

This is the springboard for a highly original film that presents this phenomenon in a fun and cinematic way.

“Música” is tremendously entertaining with a well-written script: it’s intelligent, balanced, and sends us rolling with laughter while narrating a story which, if handled by others, could have turned into a serious drama. Here, synesthesia is depicted and treated as a comedy, making the viewer feel completely at ease with the charming, adorable, and hilarious main characters.

Yes, everything revolves around Rudy’s character and his condition, but the side characters are also full of charm: from the wonderful and gorgeous Camila Mendez to J.B. Smoove, who steals the show playing a charming, somewhat philosophical, and hilarious supporting role.

Above all, it is a pleasant film that flies by, one that you enjoy and leaves a very pleasant aftertaste, although fleeting, because at its core, “Música” is a simple film in its storytelling but, told naturally, it dissolves scene by scene.

Additionally, it provides an enchanting social portrait of life in Newark and the embedded Brazilian community.

Pleasant, tender, intelligent, and charming, “Música” is a perfect film to spend a good time and also learn about this neurological phenomenon in the most entertaining and fun way possible.

Enjoy it.

In addition to his success on social media, he has also pursued a career in music, releasing original songs and covers on YouTube and Spotify. Rudy Mancuso has gained a large following with over 8 million subscribers on YouTube and over 10 million followers on Instagram. He continues to create entertaining content and collaborate with other artists in the entertainment industry.

About Synesthesia

Synesthesia is a neurological condition in which an individual’s senses are interconnected, leading to the perception of one sensory experience triggering another. This can result in a unique and involuntary experience where sounds, colors, shapes, or textures are perceived simultaneously. For example, someone with synesthesia may hear a sound and see a color at the same time. This condition affects individuals differently and can manifest in various combinations of senses.

Some common forms of synesthesia include grapheme-color synesthesia, where letters or numbers are perceived as specific colors, and chromesthesia, where music or sounds evoke colors. There is no known cause for synesthesia, but it is believed to be hereditary and affect about 4% of the population.

Many individuals with synesthesia often view their condition as a gift rather than a disorder because it allows them to experience the world in a unique way. Studies have shown that people with synesthesia may have enhanced memory capabilities due to their ability to associate different stimuli.

Overall, Synesthesia is an intriguing phenomenon that continues to fascinate researchers and intrigue those who do not possess this rare condition. It serves as a reminder of the complexity and diversity of human perception and how our brains interpret the world around us.

“I Woke Up a Vampire” Season 2 – Netflix Series: Carmie and her friends head to high school

I Woke Up a Vampire is a Canadian series on Netflix created by Thomas W. Lynch starring Kaileen Angelic Chang.

If you’ve caught the first season, you already have a hint of what to expect: a rather light story aimed squarely at the younger crowd, with a touch of mythology, a lot of vampires, and a bit of comic book world.

A series without too many pretensions that, it seems, has found its audience.

The world is vast, and sometimes these series, which the adults don’t always grasp, are a hit among the younger crowd.

Plot

Carmie wakes up at 13 years old to find herself a vampire, which gives her superpowers, but also presents her with new challenges.

About the second season

Somewhat more of the same as in the first, but this time our three friends embark on their high school journey, with everything that it entails: more teenage challenges and confronting a different world.

Don’t expect a world filled with irony or cruel jokes, because “I Woke Up a Vampire” is one of those light (very light) series where all characters are good, exemplary, and their antics aren’t exactly epoch-making. We’ve here a series for all audiences, especially for those less inclined to the extravagant, even though the setup could have provided for much, much extravagance.

If you like it, go ahead, one more option to enjoy this Thursday on Netflix.
