Amar Singh Chamkila (2024) Film on Netflix: A Blend of Music, Tragedy, and Social Realism

Amar Singh Chamkila is a musical movie written and directed by Imtiaz Ali starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra. The music is composed by A.R. Rahman.

In 1988, Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjot Kaur were killed during an assault at one of their concerts. “Amar Singh Chamkila” tells us the story of their lives and the difficult situation India was experiencing at the time.

He became known for his music, his rhythm… and also for the stories he told through his songs, for the sentiment, but also the reality behind the lyrics.

Netflix brings us this film from Bollywood, a film that could only have been made in India, with this unique mix of realism and joy, colorful and yet pale in a bitter social portrait.

Despite having a couple of splendid musical choreographies, it’s not a musical but combines the dramatic or almost tragic.

About the movie

Rhythm, color, and a very complicated story to tell because “Amar Singh Chamkila” knows how to combine the biography of this duo with the turbulent social reality it depicts, filled with conflicts and instability.

Netflix brings us this film without dubbing, in which it shows a bit of the wonderful complexity of a wonderful country, also its more bitter, cruel, and viscerally real side, this time from the life of a singer who, through his lyrics, grasped all this complexity and brought it to life with the cheerful, unique, and unmistakable rhythm of Indian music.

The movie poses quite a challenge and delivers what it aims at perfectly.

“Amar Singh Chamkila” contains fun bits of comic-style animation, snippets of comedy (not many) mixed with high doses of realism. It is indeed a film with intent, we won’t deny that, and it aims from the start to bring an idea to the screen and do everything possible to convince us of that idea, with characters that are totally driven to prove the thesis the movie is based on.

It has just two musical choreographies, and the first one clearly shows what the movie is all about: after the couple’s murder, everything is joy in the next scene, with a Bollywood-style number full of color and joy.

A commendable film because it’s well-told, rhythmic, colorful, and has a very interesting story to tell.

Although it’s also very sad.

Good Times (2024) Animation Series on Netflix: The Evans are back… and very, very different

Good Times is an animation series written by Ranada Shepard and Carl Jones.

“Good Times” was a 70s sitcom featuring an African American family. Netflix has chosen to rejuvenate the Evans and bring them back, this time in animated form and in very, very different situations: modern humor, very much in the style of Family Dad and with very amusing scenarios.

It’s very funny, both in terms of animation and the jokes. An adult animation series which, however, may resemble other adult animation series a bit too much. With a clear spirit of parody.

Plot

The Evans are a normal family… or not, because they have a baby drug dealer, a mother obsessed with religion and community, and a disastrous taxi-driving father. Plus, two adolescent children make this family of 5 a complete disaster.

About the series

Funny, very funny in the jokes, but there’s little more to offer than jokes that, after several episodes, grow a bit tiresome. The best is the baby, who has a gang of drug dealers and fights with other baby gangs in the neighborhood in a very thuggish manner. A good start, but it ends there, and “Good Times” fails to deliver a story beyond the crude jokes which, for that matter, we’ve seen everywhere.

Yes, The Simpsons have evolved, they were a parody of The Flintstones and, after them, came Family Dad and all its derivatives that, without inventing absolutely anything, were funny. The same thing happens to “Good Times”, it’s amusing during the first few episodes, but then that interest evaporates due its lack of plot to hold the attention, becoming just another adult animation series that repeats the successes of the previous ones.

That said, it’s funny as a parody and it’s one of those series where you ask yourself: but how could they have said that on a TV show? These series, at least, serve to show us that a world beyond anonymous censorship is possible, and that there are still people out there who have a sense of humor and who know how to laugh at absolutely everything, no matter how unfortunate the situation.

In this sense, it’s a refreshing and hilarious series that will make us forget there’s someone out there to remind us of what we’ve done wrong, because there are thousands of people who, like us, are a total mess as well.

Enjoy it, in all its charming chaos.

Love, Divided (2024) – A Delightful Rom-Com on Netflix Just in Time for Spring

Love, Divided is a Spanish romantic comedy directed by Patricia Font starring Aitana and Fernando Guallar.

Aitana, a rising star in Spain, blessed with enviable beauty and talent, and her equally talented and handsome co-star, Fernando Guallar, are the faces of this new romantic comedy on Netflix. Though it may not be groundbreaking, it’s sure to provide a heartwarming watch.

Plot

They’re neighbors, a bit quirky, co-existing without truly living together. They share sounds through a non-soundproof wall, providing an auditory glimpse into each other’s lives. He’s an inventor; she’s a pianist. Can you imagine something sparking in their hearts, something called love? Of course, you’ve heard this story before!

Movie Review

Critically speaking, one might define this as a piece of cinema with scant originality, simple humor, and a script that seems to write itself. A humorless comedy we’ve seen a thousand times, filled with tired jokes and an outdated plot. In search of something remarkable? This may not be it.

But why do we have this bias against romantic comedies? Understand, we have to review hundreds of films, of which around 40% are romantic comedies with nearly identical plots. From a critic’s perspective, it’s a burden to invent something fresh for a movie you’ve seen variations of several times in a week.

From a viewer’s perspective: the characters are so endearing that it’s hard not to grow fond of them throughout this captivating film, prompting you to step outside and fall in love again because, simply put, it’s springtime.

So, both perspectives have their validity: the characters are indeed delightful, designed effectively to appeal to all with their utmost simplicity. A typical sense of humor, used up, but also a type of humor that makes us feel comfortable and at ease in a lovable, easy-going film.

“Love, Divided” isn’t here to revolutionize the romantic comedy genre or overhaul cinematic narrative. It’s here simply to offer a cozy watch, in sync with a classic storyline that we’ve seen a thousand times and know how it starts, proceeds, and ends.

We also knew that spring is around the corner.

And it continues to charm us.

So, imagine cherries blossoming in Korea and across Spain, Korea, Japan, and France, a couple is falling in love, this time through a wall. Now, isn’t that lovely?

Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp (2024) Movie on Netflix: Woody’s unexpected return.

Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp is a movie directed by Jonathan A. Rosenbaum. It stars Eric Bauza, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Tom Kenny.

Basing on Woody, a character given life by producer Walter Lantz and cartoonist Ben “Bugs” Hardaway. Woody was a star from the 40s to 72. Yes, fifty years have passed, but here is Woody again, with all of the animation spirit.

Like what happened with the cinema adaptation of Tom & Jerry, this movie picks up an almost forgotten old cartoon and is, indeed, totally faithful to its original style: same characters, same jokes and, in current times, some might argue a bit out of context.

There will be those who like this blend of times in a kind of space-time wormhole … and others might not.

A movie totally designed for the youthful audience or for the nostalgics … very nostalgic ones.

Plot

Woody makes life miserable for everyone, causing the animals to expel him from the forest until he learns to behave and work in a team. As it happens, he comes across a children’s camp where, with them, he learns the lessons of teamwork and camaraderie … without losing his fun essence at all.

About the movie

Yes, it’s obvious but we have to say it: “Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp” mixes live action with animation, as they did in Roger Rabbit and in so many other subsequent movies. The movie has vibrant cinematography, with almost TV-like colors, and the animation retains its retro touch, even though we’re talking about the latest in 3D animations.

The challenge, of course, was to combine the modern with the classic, keeping the spirit of the original: mission accomplished. “Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp” is a movie that keeps everything, even the jokes, and has the essence of the most mischievous woodpecker in the forest and his particular and inimitable war cry. The question is: Will it still be funny after all these years? That’s for the new generations to answer, as this film is especially dedicated to them with its characters, style, and script.

Did we like it? We can’t confirm, but we also can’t deny that the movie achieves its purpose, but we can’t imagine the new generations missing a retro cartoon they haven’t even heard of, and it certainly isn’t a movie intended for a more adult audience nor are its jokes thought-provoking.

Our opinion

A movie designed for nostalgia that, however, forgets about the nostalgics and creates a product for the youngest ones who, time travel aside, won’t know who Woody is.

Success is found in the strangest, miraculous and unusual combinations in this infinite space-time of parallel universes that, as if by chance, decided to resurrect Woody.

Alisan Fine Arts presents Shifting Landscapes: A Celebration of Master Ink Artist Lui Shou-Kwan at New York Exhibition

NEW YORK, NY — Alisan Fine Arts is delighted to announce Shifting Landscapes, a solo exhibition celebrating the art of pioneering ink artist Lui Shou-Kwan (1919-1975). Shifting Landscapes, Lui’s first exhibition in New York, presents transformative works from the artist’s career that bridge tradition and modernity while sparking new dialogue in the international art community. Lui was a vanguard figure of the New Ink Movement in Hong Kong, a movement that reimagined the Chinese Ink tradition and flourished from the 1950s to 1970s. Extremely influential to generations of artists after him, Lui was instrumental in transforming traditional Chinese ink painting into a modern, global art form. Surveying three decades, Shifting Landscapes will run from February 27 to April 27, 2024, at Alisan Fine Arts’ recently opened New York gallery. The opening reception is Tuesday, February 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at 120 E 65th St, New York, NY 10065.

Lui inherited his interest in painting from his father, Lui Canming (1892-1963), a scholar-painter and antique shop owner. Prior to a decisive move to Hong Kong in 1948, Lui studied Chinese painting by copying classical works by past masters, such as Bada Shanren (1626-1705, Ming Dynasty), Shitao (1642-1707, Qing Dynasty) and Huang Binhong (1865-1955).

Throughout his time in Hong Kong—then under British Colonial rule—Lui was exposed to Western modern art, including Abstract Expressionism. These influences catalyzed a pivotal shift in Lui’s philosophy of art; he came to believe that true artistry lay not in imitation, but in personal expression and the development of a distinctive artistic voice. Lui’s landscape works were inspired by Hong Kong’s mountains and harbors, which he observed during his time working as an inspector in 1948 for the Hong Kong and Yaumatei Ferry Company. As his work matured, two distinct styles developed: one traditional and the other more modern. After the Visit to Tai Po Kau (1966) and Lu Keng (1969) are examples of his traditional landscapes, the latter of which he used as a teaching aid. At the same time, his new philosophy presented itself in landscape works which became increasingly abstract, with boats, houses and seaside cliffs reduced to simple, expressive brushstrokes. Red Mountain Landscape (1962) is a striking example of this, where broad swathes of ink and color reveal themselves to be mountains only after the viewer notices the small painted boats in the foreground.

Lui began to shift toward abstraction as early as the 1950s, influenced by his encounter with Sam Hunter’s book “Modern American Painting and Sculpture,” paying particular attention to artists like Willem de Kooning, Adolph Gottlieb, Mark Rothko, Philip Guston, Robert Motherwell, Franz Kline, Arshile Gorky and Jackson Pollock. As he continued to embrace modernism as a pursuit of individual expression and freedom, Lui profoundly explored pure abstraction in his new Zen paintings.

Influenced by Buddhist meditation and Daoist philosophy, Liu’s Zen paintings are less about the abstraction of the natural world and more a representation of spiritual concepts and mental states, replete with ink splashes and geometric shapes. While created in parallel to that of his American contemporaries, Lui’s art diverges in its introspective journey, symbolized by the lotus in his Zen paintings—a growth from murky waters to spiritual enlightenment. Zen Painting 1965 Winter (1965) and The Reveal of the Inner Pond (1969) both feature Lui’s signature red ‘lotus’, a visual metaphor for a state of mind that is untainted by the external world and reflective from within, embodying the essence of his artistic and spiritual quest.

By the 1970s, Lui’s pioneering visual language had galvanized an international recognition of the Chinese ink painting tradition and brought contemporary interpretations to the forefront of the art world. His influence was pivotal to the New Ink movement, by then an international movement exploring thousand-year-old techniques alongside the developments and inspiration of expressionistic and conceptual art. As a revered educator and prominent figure in the New Ink movement and to other artists working in Hong Kong, Lui shaped a generation of artists who carried forward the torch of innovation he lit.

Coinciding with Asia Week in March, Shifting Landscapes will be presented in conversation with Landscape as Metaphor: Contemporary Voices, a group exhibition of works by contemporary artists in Alisan Fine Arts’ adjacent gallery. Artists Bouie Choi, Chu Chu, Lam Tung Pang, Kelly Wang and Yang Yongliang each distinctively interpret the subject of landscape. Bouie Choi uses reclaimed wood, allowing inconsistencies and unexpected textures in the wood to inform compositions that depict the urban scenery of Hong Kong; Chu Chu uses photography as a backdrop to her flowing, effervescent calligraphy; Lam Tung Pang’s recent landscapes on wood panel are a reflection on his relocation in 2022 from Hong Kong to Vancouver; Kelly Wang creates otherworldly scenes that hover on the edge of abstraction, using rolled newsprint and mixed media; and Yang Yongliang creates fictional landscapes in a traditional Chinese style using recomposed photographs of contemporary urban images. Landscape as Metaphor: Contemporary Voices will run from February 27-April 27.

About Lui Shou-Kwan

In 1966, he became a professor of Chinese ink painting at the Department of Extra Mural Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong. In 1971, he received an MBE from the British Government. At the height of his artistic career, he passed away at the young age of 56. The latter exhibition traveled to Guangzhou in 2016 and was part of “Being and Inking: Documenting Contemporary Ink Art

2001-2016”. In 2023, the Art Institute of Chicago held the artist’s first major solo show in North America, titled Ink Play.

Fallout (2024) Series on Prime Video: The most anticipated video-game adaptation

Fallout is a new sci-fi series created by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan. it stars Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Walton Goggins and Kyle MacLachlan.

The much-awaited adaptation of one of the most renowned dystopian video-games has now arrived on Prime Video. A series whose primary appeal and challenge lay in bringing the world of the video-game to the screen, capturing the retro-futuristic dystopia that has fascinated so many fans.

Video-game enthusiasts will be delighted with its faithful aesthetic adaptation, and the maintenance of the spirit of the game, all while creating an entertaining story filled with humor and irony.

This Prime Video debut of the year is sure to please all.

FalloutFalloutPlot

Following a nuclear disaster, the remaining humans live underground, building a civilization from the fragments and memories left from the past, dreaming of recolonizing the surface once the radiation levels drop. However, the outside world is not as they expect.

About the series

The series is highly entertaining, fun, and offers cinematic amusement. By replicating the spirit of the video game, it achieves an exceptional and highly entertaining action series. Aesthetically, it’s a top-notch, high-budget series; a good story, exciting, entertaining, and quite funny, at times bordering on comedy.

For those unfamiliar with the video-game, it’s similar to Westworld, combining a retro side with a futuristic dystopia, but this time in a post-nuclear world. A fair share of western themes can be traced in the narrative about survivors and fighters and the overall aesthetic.

We greatly enjoyed the sense of humor, with a touch of the fifties alongside dark (even macabre) jokes. It skillfully plays around parody and irony within its plot, being a family series, and if you pay attention, a series with a considerable amount of irony inherent in the simplicity of its script.

In terms of production, it is excellent, nearly luxurious. We cannot fault it technically; the entire series is outstanding, with exquisitely crafted shots, aesthetic, effects, and editing – a true high-end production.

Our Opinion

As for entertainment, it’s recommended without a doubt. It has everything for perfect amusement and possesses the perfect blend of cinema for all audiences, laden with hilarious humor.

Technically, it’s brilliant in all aspects.

Join the National Gallery’s 200th Birthday Bash with Jools Holland and Friends, Spectacular Light Shows, and a Weekend Packed with Exciting Activities

The National Gallery has today (Thursday 11 April) announced plans to celebrate with a Big Birthday Weekend, a free birthday party like no other as the National Gallery turns 200 years old on Friday 10 May.

On 10 May, building on the Gallery’s exciting Friday Lates programmes of workshops, music performances, and new ways of seeing the collection, Jools Holland will perform in the Rausing Room as part of a curated programme with musical friends Ruby Turner MBE, Louise Marshall, and Sumudu. Across the rest of the Gallery there will be DJ sets, music from London Contemporary Voices, soundscapes by Anna Phoebe and poetry from Ben Okri.

The Future Room will celebrate musical collaborations past and present, with Hinako Omori, Charisse C, and Madam X curated by Sofia Ilyas from Beatport and a special Resonate: Sounds in the Gallery, a unique collaboration with Roony ‘RiskyRoadz’ Keefe; Sounds by Southeast; classical performances from London Obbligato Collective; and a breakout space on the ground floor for a mindful pause with paintings.

There will also be creative workshops offering sculptural postcard making and Renaissance Selfies with London Drawing. Friday Lates at the Gallery have been extremely successful in attracting audiences that are younger and more ethnically diverse, on average, to those who visit the Gallery at other times.

Outside on Trafalgar Square, a light show featuring projections of paintings from the Gallery and the story of our history will illuminate the building’s façade, programmed in partnership with NVisible.

With the aim of bringing the inside out, paintings that feature in the show are among those included in the upcoming cinema documentary My National Gallery, London. Playing alongside will be audio of contributors to the documentary – members of our staff, visitors and celebrities, discussing their favourite painting and what the picture, and the Gallery , means to them.

Over the course of the weekend, the Gallery will put the spotlight on family visitors, with the making of a creative ‘birthday cake’ at the centre. Created by artist Lucie MacGregor, visitors can add to the cake with their own paper creations piece by piece.

Free tickets are available for Members to book from today. Email subscribers can book free tickets from 15 April, and the  public will be able to book free tickets from 18 April. All ticket holders will be entered into a ballot to hear a special performance during the evening from Jools Holland.

Art lovers who want to celebrate but are not based in London can also take the Big Birthday Weekend as their first opportunity to visit National Treasures. Twelve of the Gallery’s most beloved paintings will be on loan to museums and galleries all over the UK, opening on Friday 10 May, meaning that half of the UK? population will be within an hour’s travel of a National Gallery masterpiece.

Gabriele Finaldi, Director of the National Gallery, says, ‘We are delighted to invite people to celebrate this momentous birthday with us, bringing together art and music. We hope the wide range of free activities across the birthday weekend  provide something for everyone – our community in London, people who know and love the Gallery, and people who haven’t yet discovered it.

Karen Eslea, Head of Learning and National Programmes, says, ‘Friday Lates welcome people of all ages to the National Gallery. They offer new ways of looking at and engaging with the collection, bringing people and paintings together. On Saturday and Sunday I’m delighted that families can be involved in our 200th birthday too, inspiring a love of art in new generations that will be our audiences for the decades to come.’

Jools Holland says, ‘I’ve been coming to the National Gallery since I was a small child mesmerised by its contents. Therefore, it is now a great honour to be invited by them to help celebrate their 200th birthday. The wonderful range of pictures in the Gallery has not only enchanted me but has also educated me. It’s the easiest way to time travel, and luckily with the National Gallery, it’s free, and here in the heart of London. I’m delighted to help them with this Bicentenary.

Bitcoin’s Rising Influence: Revolutionizing Finance and Digital Experiences

As digital currencies such as bitcoin continue to forge new paths and define a progressive age of financial transactions, the digital era ushers in swiftly changing landscapes across various sectors. The rapid growth of bitcoin as a highly coveted investment and its use in online platforms have given rise to a trend that’s reshaping the finance world and beyond. The application of this cryptocurrency in destinations such as Bitcoincasino.us is a prime example of its transformative power.

Spearheading the seamless fusion between the world of finance and entertainment, Bitcoincasino.us has become a premiere hub for bitcoin-enabled activity, with gamers worldwide continually fueling its impressive rise. This piece aims to illuminate the driving factors behind the site’s success, and the broader implications it entails for bitcoin-usage in the digital sphere.

With Bitcoin entering the mainstream conversation quite recently, it behooves us to start with a brief encapsulation of this digital phenomenon. Hailed as the first decentralized cryptocurrency, it itemizes peer-to-peer transactions on a public ledger, the blockchain. As there is no central oversight, the system is extraordinarily transparent, operates at a rapid pace and is accessible for any individual, irrespective of where they may be located in the world.

Bitcoin has hinged itself on a philosophy of decentralization, empowering financial decision making to be in the hands of individuals rather than central bodies. In 2009, when Bitcoin was first introduced by the enigmatic person (or group), known only by the name Satoshi Nakamoto, few could predict the enormous impact this digital asset would have.

Fast forward to the present day, Bitcoin has soared to unprecedented heights with a value peaking at over $60,000 per bitcoin, cementing its status as a globally renowned and sought-after investment. Its success and adoption have not only influenced other alternative cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum, Litecoin, and more, but have also revolutionized the way businesses operate. One such business is Bitcoincasino.us.

Taking a deep dive into Bitcoincasino.us reveals a world where the line between gaming and finance is blurred. Here, bitcoin is the primary currency, and players from around the world gather to participate in a variety of casino games. While the concept of online casinos isn’t new, the incorporation of cryptocurrencies like bitcoin redefines the sector.

According to analyses from Bitcoincasino.us, the major attractions of using bitcoin in gaming include speed, privacy, and access. Transactions are typically processed within the hour compared to traditional banking methods which could take days. Players can maintain anonymity as no personal information is required for transactions. This novelty of buying and playing in global online spaces resonates with a demographic that yearns for unbounded digital experiences.

The buzz surrounding Bitcoincasino.us and similar platforms attracts an audience beyond the traditional gaming community. Crypto investors and enthusiasts are increasingly hopping on the bitcoin gaming bandwagon. The prospect of adding leisure to their financial endeavors, attractively packaged in an easy-to-use platform like Bitcoincasino.us, serves as a potent magnet for the burgeoning community of Bitcoin users.

The case of Bitcoincasino.us provides meaningful insights into the potentials of Bitcoin tackling traditional payment systems. If the progressive strides within the gaming world are any indication, bitcoin is more than a trend, it could very well be an integral part of a future economy.

A final thought that bears consideration is the wider implications of Bitcoin’s fusion into our daily lives. The explosion of Bitcoin in online platforms like Bitcoincasino.us is merely a snapshot of a much larger potential. Amongst all the uncertainties surrounding Bitcoin and its future, one cannot deny the ripples it’s causing in the world of finance, and more broadly, our digital lives.

As we continue to grapple with its implications and the profound questions it raises about money, investments, and the very nature of transactions, businesses and individuals must adapt to this revolution that’s here to stay. In the end, the answers we seek might not be distant but are potentially just a few clicks away at digital spaces much like Bitcoincasino.us.
