Saudi film ‘Norah’ Nominated for Cannes Film Festival 2024

Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, 17 April 2024 – The Cannes Film Festival announced that the Saudi film “Norah,” supported by the Saudi Film Commission through its ‘Daou’ initiative, has been selected as part of the festival’s Official Selection in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ section. The festival will take place in Cannes, France, from May 14 to 25.

Written and directed by Tawfiq Al-Zaidi, the feature film “Norah” clinched the top prize of a funding award from the Saudi Film Commission’s Daou Film Competition, an initiative launched by the Kingdom’s Ministry of Culture in September 2019 to bolster Saudi film production and nurture the next generation of filmmakers. The film also garnered support from the Quality of Life program, one of the Kingdom’s Vision 2023 initiatives, Film AlUla, Generation 2030, and the Red Sea Film Festival, where it premiered in December 2023.

Set in a remote village in Saudi Arabia during the 1990s and filmed in AlUla, “Norah” presents a poignant narrative about the transformative power of art in inspiring change. It features Maria Bahrawi, Yaqoub Al-Farhan, and Abdullah Al-Sadhan.

This nomination marks a historic milestone for Saudi cinema as “Norah” becomes the first Saudi film to be included in the Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival. “Un Certain Regard” is renowned for showcasing new talent and unconventional narratives, running parallel to the Palme d’Or competition. It serves as a significant international platform that garners attention from filmmakers worldwide, emphasizing the artistic and creative merit of the selected films.

Zero Gravity Media Films Presents World Premiere of Sci-fi Series CHASER, Now Available on Prime Video, Distributed by Buffalo 8

LONDON – 12th April 2024:  Zero Gravity Media Films is delighted to announce that the world premiere of their new Sci-fi series CHASER will be available from today; available on Prime Video. CHASER is distributed by Buffalo 8.

It will be available on a pay-per-view basis from today.

A hit on the independent festival circuit, CHASER won Best Series at both the Birmingham Film & TV Festival and Star International Film Festival in 2024, and received nominations for Best Series, as well as nominations for Best Actor (Russ Russo), Best Supporting Actor (Daniel de Weldon), and Best Actress (Gia Bay) at Breaking TV Festival 2023 in London. CHASER was a finalist at the Stockholm Film & Television Festival and a semi-finalist at Blow-Up International Arthouse Film Festival.

CHASER is an eight-episode sci-fi drama following the life of struggling film editor, Eddi Sebastian (Russ Russo). Eddi, frustrated with his life and his work, experiences a truly life-changing event as he discovers a mysterious software that lets him cut and edit his life from the past 24 hours. Each half-hour episode sees Eddi drawn further and further into a new, mysterious world – only partly of his own creation – and chronicles the increasingly dark compounding consequences of his editing decisions.

ChaserChaser

This erudite show is part of a wider trend in entertainment towards cerebral science fiction; be it the new Netflix series 3 Body Problem, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part 2 or Severance or Foundation on Apple – sci-fi that’s less about epic space battles and more about intellect, is very much de rigueur in 2024. This series asks us to consider the ethics of changing the past,  our role in manipulating the choices of others, and the complexities of the butterfly effect where one small change can unleash devastating effects.

Fans of Russo will remember him from previously starring in Ryan Phillippe’s directorial debut Catch Hell, the acclaimed short Victim No. Six, NBC’s Revolution, and feature film An Act of War for which he won Best Actor at the New York-based Take Two Film Festival. Alongside Russo, CHASER features Daniel de Weldon, star of the critically acclaimed horror film Anonymous 616, and Gia Bay, who can be seen on Season 5 of What We Do In The Shadows and as Chozanne Lopez on Diggstown.

The series is written and directed by Daniel Roemer, whose previous work includes the feature film Gray, which received a special screening by Sony Pictures. His short, The Select Fit, on which the series CHASER is loosely based, was distributed by Lionsgate and was a top 20 finalist in Project Greenlight, handpicked from over 12,000 entries by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, as well as winning multiple other awards. CHASER was inspired by Roemer’s love of Donnie Darko, the series Black Mirror, and the work of Darren Aronofsky and Stanley Kubrick. Russo is represented by Eris Talent Agency, Baron Entertainment, and Kreativ Artists, with publicity managed by Studio Matrix, which also represents Daniel Roemer for US publicity and partners with The Ginger Bread Agency for UK publicity. Gia Bay is represented by Kathy Muller Agency, while Daniel de Weldon is represented by Progressive Artists Agency and Barry Krost Management.

Summer for the City Returns to Lincoln Center

NEW YORK, NY (April 17, 2024) – Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (LCPA) today announced the third annual Summer for the City, welcoming New Yorkers to hundreds of free events over three months.

A highly anticipated staple of New York City summers, this year’s festival features new commissions and a wide variety of programming bringing together thousands of artists from across the world in celebration of the multitude of cultural histories and stories that live within the city.

From June 12 to August 10 Lincoln Center’s campus transforms into a welcoming oasis where neighbors and New Yorkers from across the city can gather, relax, participate in performances, enjoy expanded food offerings at the Lincoln Center Night Market, and even play outdoor games. The outdoor spaces are designed by Visual Director Clint Ramos and inspired by flora and fauna of the American prairie, with greenery and plants by Donyale Werle Design, lighting designs by Andrew Grant, and projection designs by Zachary Borovay.

“Life, Liberty, and Happiness” is this year’s guiding curatorial theme, highlighting how active participation in the arts helps strengthen civic bonds and grow strong community. Throughout the summer, audiences are invited to be creators themselves—whether as songwriters, poets, dancers, or storytellers.

“The ethos that drives all we do for New York is to live up to our founding mission that the arts are for everyone. It is in service of this democratic ideal that we offer a summer with artistry from so many perspectives and lived experiences—all for free or Choose-What-You-Pay,” said Shanta Thake, Ehrenkranz Chief Artistic Officer of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

Thake continued, “Our guiding theme this summer helps reinforce so much of what we all share, but sometimes lose in our busy daily lives. The arts are core to our collective well-being and to helping us realize our hopes and dreams for future generations. We look forward to coming together this summer with artists from across the globe and with neighbors from across New York City.”

This year’s festival includes several new commissions; a series of dynamic concerts with the Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center in its first season with Renée and Robert Belfer Music Director Jonathon Heyward;a week-long celebration of Indian cultural traditions during India Week; a contemporary concert series curated by Nadia Sirota;the return of the BAAND Together Dance FestivalPride Month celebrations; Juneteenth events; comedy nights; activations at the intersections of the arts and technologywellness events and workshops; and expanded offerings for families.

The summer also shines a light on Deaf and disabled artists, with the return of Deaf Broadway; a Night of Access Magic silent disco curated by Kevin Gotkin;and performances centering disability artistry from guest curator Ryan J. Haddad.A relaxed open rehearsal with the Festival Orchestra, inclusive dance classes with Mark Morris Dance Group’s Dance for PD program, and the return of Big Umbrella Day are among the many access offerings for audiences. Additional highlights and a full calendar follow.

Summer for the City is presented in collaboration with organizations from across the city and the Lincoln Center campus, including Bushwick StarrCaribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora InstituteFilm at Lincoln CenterJazz at Lincoln CenterThe Juilliard SchoolKorean Cultural Center New YorkLa CasitaPEN AmericaNew York City BalletThe New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, NY Laughs, the School of American Ballet, and many more.

“In reaching people from all five boroughs and beyond with its warm welcome, Summer for the City has established itself as a New York tradition, but—as this year’s lineup shows—it’s a tradition as dynamic and inclusive as the city itself. When public space comes alive, it’s a whole that’s greater than the sum of its parts, and we can’t wait to experience that anew this summer,” said Andreas Dracopoulos, Co-President of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), which is providing lead support for the festival’s community programming.

In recent years, Lincoln Center has expanded its role as an artistic and civic cornerstone, hosting dozens of blood drives, food distributions, naturalization ceremonies, graduations, and serving as a polling place, core to its broader commitment to the city and a statement of confidence in its enduring vitality.

“There’s no place like New York City in the summer, where people across the five boroughs gather in our public spaces to enjoy the events, programming, and the magic of our city,” said Speaker Adrienne Adams.“For its third consecutive year, Lincoln Center will provide hundreds of free events to New Yorkers through Summer for the City so everyone can enjoy free, world-class art and cultural programming. Art is critical to our imagination and can help expand what we believe is possible for ourselves and our communities. That’s why it is critical that the City invests in our arts and cultural institutions, because all New Yorkers deserve to experience the life-changing power of the arts.”

Summer for the City initially grew from a need to bring together our community after the isolation of lockdown,” said Erika Mallin, Executive Director of the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). “Over the past three years, it has affirmed the measurable healing benefits of arts and culture, bringing us together with new technologies and both free and affordable programming. Now a treasured cultural tradition, NYSCA is a proud supporter of Lincoln Center as it welcomes all New Yorkers to transformative and inspiring performances all summer long.”

“Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City is an amazing expression of the unmatched power that culture has to engage and connect New Yorkers with joy, excitement, enlightenment, education, and so much more,” said New York City Cultural Affairs Commissioner Laurie Cumbo. “New Yorkers deserve every opportunity to connect with the cultural activity that makes living here so exciting, so I applaud the hundreds of free programs happening as part of Summer for the City, which are open and accessible to all. We’re proud to continue our work with Lincoln Center to bring the arts to all New Yorkers. I’ll see you this summer!”

The majority of the more than 200 events during Summer for the City are free, with select indoor performances having a Choose-What-You-Pay ticketing model, starting at $5.

Choose-What-You-Pay tickets go on sale to the public Thursday, May 16 at 12pm. Friends of Lincoln Center have pre-sale access to Choose-What-You-Pay tickets beginning Thursday, May 9 at 12pm.

Most free performances offer a free Fast Track line to gain priority access to the event ahead of the general admission line, and these free Fast Track registrations are available every Monday at noon for that week’s performances. Check event webpages on SummerForTheCity.org for performance-specific information on Fast Track availability or ticket on-sale dates.

DAVID B. – Galerie Anne Barrault, Paris

For his fourth solo exhibition at galerie anne barrault, David B. pursues a long- term quest that began with L’AscensionduHautMal. In this autobiographical tale, published in six volumes between 1996 and 2003, David B. retraced the evolution of his brother Jean-Christophe’s epilepsy and its impact on his family. He also analysed the gradual unfolding of his own creative work. Real-life stories were interwoven with imaginary characters and dreamlike narratives; David B.’s world, including relentless heroes and protective, benevolent creatures, was torn between the forces of consciousness and unconsciousness, the rational and the irrational, balance and chaos.

A dozen years later, invited by Anne Barrault to create a different form of narrative in her gallery, David B. resumed his research on his brother, whose health was deteriorating. He wanted to “draw something that would represent all [his] brother’s crises one by one, drawing them one after the other”[1]. Spread over 72 drawings, the exhibition “Mon Frère et le roi du monde” (My Brother and the King of the World) confronts 36 portraits of his brother with 36 portraits of the “King of the World” (created by René Guénon in an eponymous book). These two walls of 36 drawings create links between the works in a variety of ways. They blur the boundaries between good and evil, right and wrong, today and yesterday, inside and outside.

image 2 13DAVID B., Mon frère encerclé, 2024, ink, gouache, acrylic, pencil on paper 42 x 29.5 cm

Haunted by the recent death of his brother at the end of 2023, David B. has embarked on a new series of drawings about his sibling. “It’s what comes naturally to me, the desire to draw him, what he was, what he did, what he didn’t do. To bring him to life, in a way.”[1] These vivid recent memories from the last night David B. spent with his brother are marked by a spoken and sung monologue, incomprehensible – like a luminous and serene agony. Unanswered questions remain about how his older brother, gradually deprived of part of his memory and the use of a language, might feel. In these drawings, it is his brother’s body that takes centre stage. “The body is very important because my brother’s body has been very much affected. His illness, his epileptic seizures and the fact that he fell and hurt himself.” A body damaged by falls and medication, dislocated from the inside, fragmented, losing its usual connections. This “brother in pieces” that David B. draws, he has “often seen it as if each fall shattered a piece of him”. But it’s also a body that reads, attached to words – those in his mother’s books, those he speaks, and the new language he creates. A triptych deals with “The invention of writing”, and letters emerge from bodies.

David B. has lived in Bologna for several years, where he produced this series of drawings. He uses and mixes ink, gouache, acrylic and pencil, in his favourite black, white and grey palette. He paints and draws on a variety of papers, some of which have been salvaged and cut to the 30 x 40 cm format (that of the comic strips, and of what can be easily transported): it’s a question of adapting to their absorption and dilution capacities. These drawings are developed over a long period of time, even though the project is laid out in advance, in a notebook, in the form of a rough matrix. The future drawings are sketched boxes with titles; “often I start with the title, and I find a drawing that corresponds to a title”. There are several titles per page, and you can navigate through this notebook like in a gallery of paintings, or like in a slightly abstract storyboard, where reading the titles builds an enigmatic story. David B. cultivates the need to let himself be guided by the creative process, doing touch-ups, if necessary, that gradually come together: “I do everything directly on the final page, which doesn’t mean I work quickly, I think a lot. If it doesn’t work, I erase it and come back to it. I paint over it. It’s hardly surprising, then, to find in his current acquaintances two important figures of the surrealist movement, the French painter André Masson (whom he rediscovered as told by Michel Leiris), and the Italian writer, painter and brother of Georgio Di Chirico, Alberto Savinio. Here words and singular works of art, some of them little-known, come together to build worlds out of things that don’t exist together. David B. draws us into this revelation of the invisible through his ability to transcribe an imaginary world of incredible fertility, tainted of tragedy.

The growth of online live entertainment

Remember that period in 2020 when everybody spent a lot more time indoors? Yeah. You probably won’t forget that in a hurry. It was about that time that companies realized that they couldn’t really make cash from people turning up at live events. Instead, they needed to leverage live entertainment online, and we’ve since seen a massive shake-up in the industry.

While it is unlikely that online live entertainment will continue to grow at the same pace that it did during 2020, it is clear it is still growing. More people are tuning in to online live entertainment, and companies are still investing heavily in it.

We figured that we would take the time to discuss a few of the trends that have been drivers for the growth of online live entertainment.

Metaverse live entertainment

Some people chuckled at the idea of the metaverse, but there is no denying that it is going to be a major factor in the growth of online entertainment.

The metaverse, pushed forward by Facebook, combines virtual reality, augmented reality and social interactions to create unique live experiences. People can attend concerts from the comfort of their own home, socialize with others, play online events etc. The tech is still in an early stage, but it has massive potential for growth.

When it was first announced, many people were a little uncertain of the whole idea of a metaverse. However, stats have shown that it is growing faster than anticipated. Between 2024 and 2030, the metaverse is expected to grow by a whopping 10.37%. The industry will be worth $500 million at that point – still tiny figures compared to the worldwide media industry, but nothing to sniff at, especially since there will likely be around 3.5 million users at that stage.

This is particularly interesting, since this is exactly the way we see the industry going. You’ll see that as we discuss a few more online live entertainment trends. We believe that the live entertainment industry will be driven by replicating ‘real world’ experiences from the comfort of home. People don’t always want something different when they are watching their entertainment at home – they want something that feels good to do, but is also a lot more convenient.

Expect the metaverse to be a huge focus for Facebook and other companies going forward.

image 2 10The growth of online live entertainment 6Live streaming

OK. So, live streaming has been around for a while. YouTube and Twitch have been the biggest platforms for that, but Facebook Live and some newly established platforms are hot on their heels.

Live streaming has made it easier for people (and companies) to broadcast online entertainment at a lower cost. Honestly, there are people who have made millions live streaming themselves playing games. All they needed was a camera and a computer to get started.

Live streaming has shaken up the type of content people have access to, and it is being used in a myriad of different ways. We mentioned people playing games, but people have built their own TV shows, and musicians stream their gigs online. The more content there is, the faster the live entertainment industry has grown.

New experiences online

There are some experiences, such as casino gambling, where if you wanted to dabble with something more than a computer screen, you’d need to head to a casino in person – a bit prohibitive in many areas. However, many online casinos have seen a huge rise in players once they introduced a live casino.People can now replicate the feel of being in a real casino from the comfort of their own home. They just boot up their computer and watch the dealer spin a wheel or deal some cards. Cool stuff.

Online streaming has also given people new experiences that they would not have been able to get anywhere else. As we have said, many musicians are now streaming some of their gigs online, which is a great way for people to experience a gig they may otherwise not have been able to attend, for cost or travel reasons. This is an area of growth that we expect will continue growing rapidly.

The future of online live entertainment

Online live entertainment was always going to grow at a rapid rate. Granted, it was driven further than anybody could have anticipated in 2020. However, with more and more stuff heading online, it was only right that our entertainment would too. We see nothing but continued growth for the industry.

Don’t Hate the Player: A reality show on Netflix of betrayals, and mental and social games.

Don’t Hate the Player is a television show in which 13 contestants will have to use their wits to win a prize of 150,000 euros. Hosted by Claude Dartois.

7 women and 6 men will battle for a prize of 150,000 euros. In Mexico, 13 individuals will have to betray each other, through a process of elimination, to choose a single winner.

“Don’t Hate the Player” is a reality show which combines strategy games with a lot, a lot of social strategy, betrayal, and manipulation. The creators of the program won’t hesitate to manipulate either, introducing new rules as the game evolves.

This Wednesday, the first four episodes have been broadcast, which have already unleashed a heap of conflicts, eliminations, and surprises.

The game has two settings: a camp in the forest with few comforts, and a villa filled with amenities. Through the games, the 13 participants will be divided into two groups, the upper class against the lower class, and those from the upper class will have the power to vote to see who will be eliminated from among those at the camp.

A lot of battle of the sexes in a relentless confrontation in a game where no one trusts anyone and there are no allies without betrayal.

“Don’t Hate the Player” is a French reality show that, above all, is based on conflict and, without any pretext, seeks all kinds of ploys to create conflict among the program’s participants.

It doesn’t deny it, doesn’t hide it: social conflict is a part of life and this reality show affirms it once again.

If you want to find out who will take home the 150,000 dollars prize, you know, you can watch “Don’t Hate the Player” on Netflix from Wednesday, April 17th.

The Grimm Variations – Netflix’s Anime Series: 6 Grimm Brothers’ Tales… Massively Altered

The Grimm Variations is a Japanese animation series based on the novel by The Brothers Grimm.

From Cinderella to Little Red Riding Hood, making a detour at The Pied Piper of Hamelin, Netflix presents a Japanese series that radically alters the Grimm Brothers’ narratives and adapts them in an entirely distinctive, twisted, macabre, and thrilling way.

The tales shape-shift, leading us with Little Red Riding Hood into an ultramodern world filled with perversities, Cinderella seen as a manipulative girl, the celebrated Pied Piper of Hamelin in an extremely romantic rendition, and an action-packed manga version of the Musicians of Bremen.

An uproariously fun and refreshing series that is sure to delight anime aficionados.

About the Series

Six narratives that bear no semblance to the original Grimm Brothers’ tales. Except for the title and some loosely borrowed parts of the story, these are completely different tales, more like a parody of the original narratives. There’s nothing wrong with this, the classic Grimm Brothers’ tales have been told and this series shares six distinct stories that, full of parody spirit, draw inspiration and imagine entirely new, creative, and diverse worlds.

“The Grimm Variations” is a series brimming with humor: from the illustrations to the soundtrack, everything is imbued with a broad sense of humor, even the most grotesque and terrifying parts of the series.

Each episode has a style completely different from the others, and they all share a presentation between two brothers who narrate the story, stemming from the classic past of the tales. Later, with successive stories, imagination takes over and we enter into a world of parody, humor, audacity, and provocation.

The series steers us by one question: What will they come up with next? It does this well and manages to surprise, most notably in the Little Red Riding Hood episode, which we enjoyed most for its perverse and imaginative side.

But there’s something for everyone and every taste.

Definitely, anime lovers will enjoy this series much more than others, because this combination is sure to please manga enthusiasts more than those who prefer the classical European Grimm stories. Notably, the Grimm Brothers’ tales were never as innocent as we were led to believe.

Our Opinion

A truly entertaining, fun, and creative take on the Grimm Brothers’ tales.

A series brimming with talent and ideas.

Our Living World (2024) Documentary Series on Netflix: A Tribute to Planet Earth through Ecological Balance

Our Living World is a documentary series narrated by Cate Blanchett.

From the very beginning, “Our Living World” imparts a profound lesson: we are not alone. Indeed, nature, in all its fierce, ruthless glory, carries within it life and death, rebirth, struggle, destruction… all that we call existence.

“Our Living World” is a four-part documentary series that reveals the incredible interconnections among living beings, weaving an intricate tapestry of relationships that binds all creatures together.

This documentary reveals the profound truth that everything is interconnected. The death, destruction, life, and beauty we witness in nature are all part of the natural cycle that keeps our spectacular planet alive.

About the Documentary

Stunning imagery combined with the extraordinary voice of Cate Blanchett. But in this series, it’s not the actress who takes center stage, but nature itself and the remarkable life forms inhabiting it. Turtles, salmon, even snow, are the true stars, integral parts of an endless life cycle that oscillates between life and death, sometimes making us feel so small, so alone, yet also incredibly connected.

“Our Living World” is a documentary brimming with love for life. Don’t expect a heavy-handed lesson, or a preachy series about climate change. Instead, it’s more of a celebration of life and nature and its tenacious will to endure.

A documentary narrating the strength of nature through its most wonderful characters: the living beings.

Following in the footsteps of Morgan Freeman with his Netflix series, now it’s Cate Blanchett’s turn. Their remarkable voices serve as a reminder, once again, that we are not alone on this planet, and we are, in some way, interconnected, part of a whole; a whole that’s fierce, wonderful, and called nature.

Enjoy.
