Deaf and Autistic Students Create Giacometti Inspired Art Works. The National Portrait Gallery is working with two London schools, Oak Lodge School for students with hearing, speech, language and communication needs in Wandsworth and Drumbeat School for children and young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Brockley. The project involves artist-led creative workshops and Gallery visits inspired by its current critically acclaimed exhibition Giacometti: Pure Presence.

A workshop for students at Oak Lodge School takes place today Thursday 10 December and there will be a showcase private view of the students’ finished work at the National Portrait Gallery on Thursday 7 January 2016. This will also include finished work from students at Drumbeat.
Artists Chloe Cooper and Jasleen Kaur have worked with the students in the schools, the exhibition and the Gallery’s Learning Studio. The Gallery has engaged the students with Giacometti’s practice through a series of tailored practical workshops.
The hard-to-reach audiences who may have barriers to participating in cultural institutions, have been offered experiences not otherwise available in their schools. Some of the participants may not have been to a gallery or museum, and those who have, still require additional support to participate.
The Gallery has worked with both schools previously, and has seen the benefits that small interventions can have in encouraging these young people to participate in the visual arts. In-depth project work is only possible with additional funding, so thanks to the support of Bank of America Merrill Lynch, it has been possible to work with these schools again in a more rigorous way. The resulting work will be seen at a special view and photo-call on 7 January 2016.
Giacometti: Pure Presence is the first ever exhibition solely to consist of portraits by the twentieth-century artist Alberto Giacometti and opened at the National Portrait Gallery on 15 October. It runs until 10 January 2016. Comprising over 60 works, the exhibition includes paintings, sculptures and drawings, spanning the entire range of the Swiss artist’s career. Including very rare loans from private collections and seldom-seen portraits, the exhibition marks the fiftieth anniversary of Giacometti’s death.
Giacometti: Pure Presence is curated by Paul Moorhouse, the National Portrait Gallery’s Curator of Twentieth Century Portraits.

Sunday Poetry with Jenean C. Gilstrap. Today: The Vacancy

Hopper. The Room. 1931
the vacancy…
she sits
in a room
void of life
her back to the open windows
virgin white sheers blow
the particles of her shattered life
blue walls wrapping
her slumped skeleton
still she sits
staring at the cold hard floor
her lonely arms limp in her lap
she sits
and stares
but her eyes
are met with nothing but emptiness
nothing on either side of them
everything blank
and
she wonders
where it all went
those things that are no more
that have ceased to exist
that have disappeared
from her sight
her hearing
her touch
her lips
from her very life
where are they now
the sight of him
the sound of him
the feel of him
the taste of him
his love
his life
their life
and now
her own life
where are they now
without
him
and so
she sits

Red is such an interesting color to correlate with emotion, because it’s on both ends of the spectrum. On one end you have happiness, falling in love, infatuation with someone, passion, all that. On the other end, you’ve got obsession, jealousy, danger, fear, anger and frustration. Taylor Swift
When you are missing someone, time seems to move slower, and when I’m falling in love with someone, time seems to be moving faster. Taylor Swift

Frank Sinatra didn’t understand women. Why?

Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe
Frank Sinatra is one of the most popular and significant musical artists of the 20th century having sold more than 150 million records worldwide. He had three children, Nancy (born 1940), Frank Jr. (born 1944), and Tina (born 1948), all with his first wife Nancy Sinatra. But Sinatra was also married to Hollywood actress Ava Gardner from 1951 to 1957, and ater, he married Mia Farrow, on July 19, 1966.
However, Sinatra admitted that he didn’t understand women. Why? Yareah quote of the day is by this great singer and personality. Listen to him!
“I’m supposed to have a Ph.D. on the subject of women. But the truth is I’ve flunked more often than not. I’m very fond of women; I admire them. But, like all men, I don’t understand them.” Frank Sinatra.

Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner
What kind of women did Sinatra love? Once, he said that he liked intelligent women. “When you go out, it shouldn’t be a staring contest.”
A happy and lucky person. We miss him!
“People often remark that I’m pretty lucky. Luck is only important in so far as getting the chance to sell yourself at the right moment. After that, you’ve got to have talent and know how to use it.” Frank Sinatra.
Enjoy your day, Yareah friends. Art is everywhere and up to you!
“I would like to be remembered as a man who had a wonderful time living life, a man who had good friends, fine family – and I don’t think I could ask for anything more than that, actually.” Frank Sinatra.

London Auctions. Books from the Late Tim Clarke’s Ceramics Reference Library
London auctions. Over 100 lots of books from the reference library of Ceramic expert Tim Clarke will be offered in the Bibliophile Sale at Bloomsbury Auctions on Thursday 14th January. The collection focuses on continental ceramics following Clarke’s particular interest in Meissen and other German makers, alongside other European ceramics such as Sèvres and Italian maiolica. Prices range from £100 for group lots of books, to £2,000 for an account of the “Etruscan” porcelain service commissioned from the Royal Factory at Capodimonte in 1785 by Ferdinand IV, King of Naples, as a gift for George III.
Only a few copies of Interprétation des Peintures dessinées sur un Service de Table…, a rare account of the “Etruscan” porcelain service commissioned by Ferdinand IV, survive in British libraries. Four recorded copies have appeared at auction (including this one in 1978) one being defective and the most recent in 1989 [est. £1,500-2,000 Lot 54].
From the large opening section of works on Meissen, is a rare and handsome catalogue of the finest private collection of Meissen porcelain, assembled by the German banker Gustav von Klemperer (1852-1926), 1928, one of 150 copies, inscribed by Victor von Klemperer on limitation leaf [est. £600-800 Lot 5]. The collection was confiscated by the Nazis and believed to have been destroyed by the Allied bombing of Dresden in 1945. It was rediscovered in 1951 when a workman found pieces of porcelain amongst the rubble. The pieces were finally excavated and restored in 1991 and returned to the family. Some of the restored figures, although battered and defective, were sold at auction in London in 2010, achieving immense prices.

Four early English essays by Aaron Hill include a paper that describes a curious method for making china by mixing ground up Oriental china with lime from oyster shells and gum water, and moulding it. This edition is scarce, one of only 4 known copies [est. £500-700 Lot 23]

Under the topic of French ceramics is Monographie de l’Oeuvre de Bernard Palissy, by Henri Delange and A. Sauzay. Know Your Flood Risk launches new ‘Homeowners Guide to Flood Resilience’

Homeowners Guide
With the Government this week announcing* an additional £51 million to support households and businesses affected by last weekend’s devastating floods in Cumbria and Lancashire, the Know Your Flood Risk campaign has launched a new ‘Homeowners’ Guide to Flood Resilience’. The free guide provides advice on how to determine your flood risk, how to plan against flooding, as well as offer guidance on flood resistance measures, appropriate property level flood products and community-based measures.
The guide, which is written especially with the homeowner in mind, hopes to reduce the worry about what property level flood products to use, and illustrates the variety of ways a home can become resilient to being flooded.
Mary Dhonau OBE HonRICS HonDSc, Chief Executive of the Know Your Flood Risk campaign said: “This time exactly 15 years ago, I had flood water in my home – the second flood in only just a few weeks – so I know exactly how dreadful being flooded is, and to be flooded at Christmas time makes it all the more appalling.
With the announcement of grants for those newly flooded, this guide will be an excellent resource for those thinking about trying to reduce their risk. The prospect of trying to reduce flood risk to your home can be a baffling one, with many people not knowing how to go about this other than resort to the humble and extremely inefficient sandbag. This Homeowners’ Guide is here to help. In addition, for those thinking about installing flood resilient repair, we have an excellent case study, which details the types of interventions that can be made.”
Concludes Mary: “Sadly, flooding is set to get worse and it is essential that we not only know our own flood risk, but prepare in advance and take moves to make our homes more resilient to being flooded. We hope that by launching the new guide it will help inform homeowners as to what can be done to reduce the impact a flood can have and in turn reduce the misery that being flooded brings with it.”
Since 2000, Mary Dhonau has vociferously championed flood awareness, preparation and resilience and is a passionate advocate of empowering communities to recognise and take responsibility for minimising their collective flood risk. Mary was awarded an OBE for services to the environment in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in 2009. In December 2014, she was awarded Honorary RICS (HonRICS) status, in recognition of her high profile in standing-up for the public’s interest regarding flooding. Mary was also given the ‘Voice of the Customer ‘award and the CII Public Interest Awards 2015 and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of the West of England in July 2015.
The Know Your Flood Risk Campaign’s mission is to raise awareness of the risk of flooding from all sources. It is one of the UK’s leading online resources for helping people find out the flood risk related to their current or future homes
