Cancer Cure. Is the fruit from the Graviola tree a medical miracle?

Soursop is the fruit of Annona muricata, a broadleaf, flowering, evergreen tree native to tropical areas. Both, in America and Africa. It is in the same genus, Annona, as cherimoya and is in the Annonaceae family.

Can this popular Yucatan fruit really cure cancer?

News are all around the web. It seems that some laboratory studies found that a compound isolated from soursop seeds had 10,000 times the potency of one particular chemotherapy drug on colon adenocarcinoma cells. Furthermore, in laboratory tests, extracts of graviola has been shown to kill certain types of liver and breast cancer cells that are resistant to particular chemotherapy drugs. Great! Then, is this fruit the solution for this tragic disease? Maybe, but we have to wait.

Since 1976, soursop has proven to be a potent cancer killer in independent laboratory tests. But scientists warn that there have been no large scale tests on humans and there is no credible evidence to support claims that graviola is an effective cure or treatment for cancer.

Thus, while plant compounds in graviola may have properties that can kill cancer cells in vitro, caution is required as there is no evidence of safety or efficacy in humans.

Despite the lack of human data, many websites promote graviola to cancer patients. They are based on traditional use and on the in vitro studies. But take care and speak with your doctor?

Phil Matarese and Mike Luciano met while working together at a New York City production company, where they would do voices for the pigeons outside of their office. Phil, an illustrator in his free time, proposed animating a scene based off their pigeon-riffing to screen at Mike’s monthly comedy show.

Thus was born a series of animated shorts, simply dubbed “Animals.”. The series quickly became a full-time passion project, screening in venues throughout NYC, as well as at festivals around the country. After winning Best Comedy at the 2013 New York Television Festival, the duo gained the attention of executive producers Jay and Mark Duplass, who convinced them to quit their jobs and move across the country to begin making ten half-hour episodes independent of any studio or network.

One year later, the inaugural two episodes premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival – the first independently produced TV series to do so – which led to acclaim in the New York Timesand Los Angeles Times, and a two-season pickup by HBO.

The animation for ANIMALS. was created with Starburns Industries, the studio known for “Rick & Morty” and Charlie Kaufman’s new stop-motion film “Anomalisa.”
