Same sex Star Trails couples
"Welcome to Bloomington, Indiana — home to the nation's fifth largest per capita population of same-sex couples and one of the most progressive cities in the Midwest, both socially and politically."
Okay, so I was just doing my usual "search tumblr for an image to reblog to go with my text post" thing, and instead of an image, I came across this quote, which comes from a Bloomington info site. Bloomington is the Gay Capital of the Midwest, after all.
I wrote a short story this morning, set at The Corner, from This Brilliant Darkness. Remember the scene where Christine flirts with the Fullcons?
Well, I started writing this story from the point of view of the female Fullcon. Only, people kept referring to her as "sir," and "brother" and things like that. She was fighting with her boyfriend and thinking of leaving him to go hang out at the gay bar.
I thought to myself "Why in the hell would a straight woman want to go hang out at Bullwinkles?" (Except for the obvious answer of it having the only decent dancefloor in town.) That was when it clicked. Gay bar. Gay bar. Bloomington. Duh, they're both dudes.
By the time she exploded in anger at her boyfriend on the sidewalk outside (for the sins of flirting with the barista and with Christine), I realized "Wait! She's so angry because she is a he, and he's dressing in drag as the female Fullcon, because he lost a coin toss to his boyfriend!"
He was irritated by the flirting, sure—but he was angry because his costume just wasn't working.
I hope my sharing that with you will not ruin the story. The antho won't be out for quite some time, and there's no guarantee they will even accept my story, but I thought you Bloomingtonians would get a laugh out of my story about the story.
Note: I realize Bullwinkle's is closed now. How sad. I'll keep it alive inmy Btown, okay?
Writing is like that, for me. I sit down and start typing, and the characters tell me what's going on. Over the course of a book, I'm learning that they weasel their intentions out in a much sloppier fashion, over the long haul. The shorts are so much tidier!
I had to ask them to please tone down the swearing, though! Gee whiz!
But other than that, I'm quite pleased with the story I'm tentatively calling Living Well and Tidily at The Corner Cafe.
In other writing news…
Before I wrote the short, I did a little editing of Troll or Derby. Looking forward to finishing that, so I can move on to writing This Cracking Silence, the second half of Christine's story.
I miss the Bloomington of my mind. I relished writing about the Star Trails parade. I can't wait to go back.
OH, and yesterday! I was featured on Bloody Bookish, for Women in Horror Month! How cool is that? Go visit, would ya?it.
