Recently, I received a very thoughtful and poignant letter written by a sixth grade student as part of the Letters about Literature campaign for Ohio. The Center for the Book, which is housed in the Library of Congress, asks participating students in grades 4-12 to write a personal, heartfelt, reflective letter to an author of a novel, poem, speech, or true story. Students are asked to describe what enlightenment or positive changes developed in the students' lives as a result of their reading the author's work. It was my great pleasure to read her very moving letter and respond to her. What a great idea for encouraging reading, self-reflection, and personal development!
