Cover Reveal: Joe by H.D.Gordon
It gives me great pleasure to take part in the cover reveal for fellow Dark Muse, H.D.Gordon's new novel, Joe!
The cover is so compelling. I cannot draw my eyes from it!! I'm a person who would buy a book based on the cover alone, so if I saw this in a bookstore I'd grab it and run for my life! Oops, did that just make me sound like a kleptomaniac?? What I meant was...run for my life to the nearest checkout :)
Anyway, onto the reason we are here...drumroll please...

I have been told that this book is very different from The Alexa Montgomery Saga, for which Ms. Gordon is so well known, however, I have no doubt that it will be just as amazing!

When I first read the synopsis for Westlake Soul, I expected a superhero adventure novel with just a touch of seriousness, but what I got was the total opposite. This book is a non-stop emotional whirlwind that ripped through my heart and left me devastated. WARNING! Prepare to cry your eyes out!! The story tells of Westlake Soul, a free-spirited surfer whose entire life changes within a split second. An accident that leaves him in a permanent vegetative state, forces him to watch in painful silence as the people he loves are faced with difficult decisions. Unaware of his presence, he pleads with them to not give up on him, but to fight for him because there is nothing he wants more than to truly live again. Dr Quietus, his evil nemesis challenges him each day as he clings to life, but Westlake’s will to survive is stronger than Dr Quietus and he fights with everything he has left. Is it enough, though? The only one who believes in him is his dog, Hubba-Hubba Artful Soul, or Hub as we so affectionately get to know him throughout the book. By some strange occurrence, after the accident, Westlake is able to communicate with Hub, as well as other animals. If only Hub was able to communicate with the rest of the characters in the book, then he’d be able to tell them that Westlake was still around. With the arrival of a new caregiver, Yvette, Westlake’s “life” changes, he feels more alive than he has in months and new hope fills him with the idea that Yvette may truly believe that he is not entirely gone. But, as is reality, some things cannot be fixed, no matter how much we wish them to be, no matter how hard we fight.
Rio Youers’ brilliance in bringing to life the very essence of the human soul is breath-taking. Never have I connected more with a character, especially one who is physically unable to do much of anything throughout the story. All we know if what he feels and experiences within his being. The strength of his spirit and determination to win the fight that is death is beautiful, and my ideas and thoughts of people in his condition will forever be changed.
I was constantly cheering for Westlake, with the hopes that maybe, just maybe, a miracle would bring him back to the world he so desperately wanted to return to. This book is filled with heart-breaking moments as his family struggle with a decision that may very well end Westlake’s torture, as well as their own, bringing with it an entire new level of misery. There is truly nothing I can fault this book on. It was a fantastic read from start to finish, and it haunted me for days after I had finished reading it. Every time I think of this novel, I will be reminded of how precious life is, and how quickly it can be taken away.
Favorite quote : “Everybody thinks he is broken, but he is still intact. And sometimes, if you press your face to the glass, you can see through the cracks -” – Yvette, just after she’s compared Westlake to a cracked window that has to be washed carefully, in case the pieces fall out.
Because of the profound way in which this book affected me, I can give it nothing less than...

REVIEW
Reading this book was kind of like being on a roller coaster ride. It had its ups and it had its downs. There were times when I got bored with the book and just had to stop reading, and then there were times when I couldn't tear my eyes away from my Kindle.
I can't say I connected with any of the characters on an emotional level, and a few of them were quite forgettable, but this didn't stop me from enjoying the story. Peter Warlock's world is filled with secrets, some he hasn't even discovered yet. What I really loved about the MC is how complex he is. He is neither good nor bad, and he constantly struggles to control the darkness within himself. Normally the hero of the story is clean-cut and at times one dimensional, but Peter Warlock, on his own, was a thrilling mystery throughout the novel. We see him go from being a man with psychic abilities, to someone with a deeply rooted, dark attachment to the greatest evil.
Peter's life is pretty routine. Until one fateful night he foresees a devastating attack that will end hundreds of thousands of lives. His vision also shows him a stranger, whom he believes is the person behind the attack. Peter, and his group of psychic friends only have three days to unravel the mystery of the attack, so when the stranger from his vision walks into his life the very next day and tries to kill him, Peter is even more determined to stop his vision from becoming reality. This is where the plot really begins to thicken. Mr. Swain has a brilliant way of leading his reader down one path, only to steer them in a totally different direction, which leads to even more questions. The constant twists and turns were fantastic, and built the suspense to an entire new level.
Although the story centers around the mystery of the attack and who is behind it, there are many smaller mysteries woven into the plot.
This book is filled to the brim with suspense, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a thrilling mystery, with a dark supernatural twist.

REVIEW
I have to admit that I really struggled to get into this book. The story didn't flow very well and there were moments when I wish a little more effort had been put into the editing process. Although the hiccups I noticed were very slight, they were enough to distract me from reading, and at one point I was ready to put the book down, never to pick it up again. I also felt that sections of dialogue were forced and there was that tiny annoyance of characters always refering to each other by name, even when there was no one else around...
Now I know it seems like I'm only harping on negatives, but I always strive to give my honest opinion!
I'm not saying I hated this book, it just started off as a bit of a bore. I really only got into the story a couple of chapters in, when Thomas comes to see Carmen and Brighton, and they discuss the latter's talents. I felt this was the turning point of the story and things only got better. I enjoyed the interaction between Lily and Bri. They felt like a real couple and even reminded me of a few of my married friends! Although Brighton didn't stand out as the typical drop-dead gorgeous hero, he certainly lived up to the part with his devotion and love for Lily. He was willing to die for her, literally, and he always had her best interests at heart.
Lily is a great character. She seemed a little flat at first but when she appeared later, she really had grown into a beautiful, more complex young lady.
The talent that each character has is very interesting. It was a wonderful, fresh idea and the fact that the Dark Ones are "magically" inclined but still vulnerable is a nice change because most of the time these types of characters are invincible!
Overall, this book grew into a fantastic fantasy adventure.
May I also just add that I am so happy with the cover change. The new cover for Energy just speaks so much more to what the book is about, and it has a more mystical appeal!

The plot was a little predictable - a group of friends, a psycho out for revenge and a few strange occurences that keep you guessing who exactly is behind everything that is happening. But there were one or two twists thrown in which really and truly surprised me.
So basically the story is about five very ordinary teens who receive invites to the party of the year. Their excitement at having been invited out-weighs their suspicions, and they go to the party. But once they arrive, it is quite clear that something is not right. Or at least only to the MC, Sarah. The house has a creepy, dim atmosphere and their hostess is a little too happy to see them all, even though she cannot remember their names. Yeah, something is definitely up!
A quick game of muscial chairs singles out each of the five friends and they find themselves becoming the entertainment. Only, this supposedly innocent turn of events soon becomes a deadly game of cat and mouse.
The idea of a "human hunt" was quite interesting, and a fresh idea. It was only once the hunt began that I really got into the book. I love mysteries, and I try to keep track of everyone's movements, hoping to figure out who the culprit is before they are actually revealed, and everytime I thought I knew who it was something would prove me wrong. When the "bad guy" was finally revealed, I felt a little disappointed. The story behind why the person was out for revenge could have been a little more scandalous, and it don't think it warranted the deadly situtations that the characters were thrown into. I mean would someone really go so far off the deep end and try kill people, if faced with the same situation? I just had a very hard time believing it!This book also has a touch of romance, which I felt could have been left out. It just didn't have a place in the story, and it was almost as if it was added as a filler.

READ-A-THON UPDATES
As the Read-a-thon winds down I'd like to wrap up my reads ;)
After putting my Kindle away, I picked up The Faerie Path by Frewin Jones. I have managed to read 165 pages of this book so far...
So in Total...
1) The Abandoned - 73 pages
2) The Restorer - 377 pages
3) The Kingdom - 47 pages
4) The Faerie Path - 165 pages
That's an awesome 662 pages read!!

It's officially just past the halfway mark!! Time seems to have flown by :)

I didn't get very far into The Kingdom ( only read about 47 pages ) when I needed an extra rest. I even think my Kindle silently thanked me!
Anyway, it was 1am my time, which meant I'd already been awake for close to 19 hours and my body was begging for a rest. So I closed my eyes for what felt like a second and here I am, 2 hours later, still feeling like I have goldfish eye syndrome but more relaxed. I think I'm going to put the Kindle away for a while and pick up a good ol' fashioned paperback for a few hours!

I decided to take a little break from reading to post a quick update. I'll just keep updating my progress in this post as I continue...
So we're somewhere in hour 8 of the thon and I've managed to read The Abandoned by Amanda Stevens ( 73 pages ). this book is the prequel to the series and is an exclusive eBook. Sticking to my original plan of reading The Graveyard Queen series I then moved on to The Restorer ( 377 pages ), and boy am I glad I started reading this series !! The story is not as easy-breezing as the YA novels I'm used to reading but I'm loving every minute of the haunting thrill-ride Ms. Stevens has created. I've found myself on more than one occasion looking over my shoulder and I almost wish night hadn't fallen so quickly as I prepare to jump into another eery story filled with ghosts, mystery and romance :)
My eyes feel like they've taken a beating and I think I'm starting to get goldfish eye syndrome from staring at my Kindle for too long. I'm going to take a quick break and then I'll begin The Kingdom :)

4) I work in the field of finance by day and I write books by night! I'm currently working on the last two books in my trilogy. Tomorrow I'm dedicating the entire day to writing.
