"I'm Only Human After All" by Alex I. Rogers follows a high school freshman as he faces a multitude of bullies who threaten to bring him down

NEW ORLEANS (MMD Newswire) August 15, 2011 - - Alex I. Rogers uses his personal experiences to speak to other young adults who may be the victim of bullying in "I'm Only Human After All" (ISBN 1461051916). While bullying wasn't a hot topic years ago when he was a victim to it, the topic appears all too frequently in schools across the country. Aside from bullying, Rogers covers a variety of situations and problems that young adults face growing up in today's society.

As a freshman in high school, Alex Rogers has a hard time adjusting to the new environment. Readers learn of his emotions through Rogers's deep introspection as well as the experiences he faces in both high school and at home. Rogers believes that he has found the answer to his problems when he begins to hang out with his friend from middle school named Devan. That is until Devan creates a rumor that Alex is gay in order to boost his popularity with the other kids.

Alex quickly becomes the target of bullying by Devan and his new friends, Sheldon and Jeremey. Confrontations play out between Alex and his bullies until they end up in the principal's office. While his bully is punished, Alex is assigned the task of reporting trouble-makers for the administration. The tormenting seems to be over until a new student named Nader, who Alex believes he had befriended, releases a CD with the sole purpose of destroying his reputation.

"A lot of people have asked me why I do what I do; what inspires me. I can only tell them, life," Rogers said. "This book that I have written is a product of what I have experienced, and was created for the sole purpose of empowering and enlightening others that read it. It's almost a form of therapy; how we connect and live through the characters we read about."

As the first book in a coming-of-age series, Rogers hopes that readers walk away from "I'm Only Human After All" empowered to take on whatever life throws at them, whether its bullies or sibling rivalry, or finding their identity, as well as other issues they face as they grow.

"I'm Only Human After All" is available for sale online at Amazon.com and other channels.

Had my first book signing today for I'm Only Human After All! Was amazing.(30+ sold & signed) I had people I coming up to my desk telling me that the book was so raw and powerful. I'm glad for this... they told me it helped them break through things they were dealing with along with empowering them to help others! Exactly what I wanted from the "Empowerment" Series. A news article on my book: Southeastern student publishes book on teen issues

Southeastern student publishes book on teen issues
August 25, 2011

HAMMOND – Up and coming author Alex Rogers hopes to inspire others through his new book, “I’m Only Human After All,” which hits on important issues that young adults face like bullying, growing pains, sibling rivalry and even the death of a close friend.

“I want others to be empowered,” says Rogers. “I want them to be able to read this book and take something from it that will help them out with struggles in their own lives.”

Rogers is a native of Marrero and a junior majoring in business administration at Southeastern Louisiana University. He wrote the book as the first installment in his Empowerment Series, which is based off of personal experiences and struggles through his first years in high school and is designed for teens and young adults who are struggling with life issues.

“Just looking back at my experiences, I feel that people can get inspiration by seeing the things I went through in high school,” says Rogers. “Hopefully it can help them overcome difficulties that they are dealing with in their lives.”

In his book, Rogers uses real-life situations from his own past to connect with his audience. He recounts an experience he had with some classmates back in high school.

“A series of times I was bullied was when several of my classmates teased me about a weight issue I had when I was younger,” said Rogers. “They were making glaring comments at every given opportunity they could, taking pleasure in my pain.”

Rogers self-published the book through CreateSpace, a company owned by Amazon that gives authors the option to self-publish works through its website. He also utilized the professional opinion of several freelance editors who reviewed and examined the book to ensure that it was excellent in both style and content.

“The narrator is a teen going through trouble with bullying and other matters of ‘fitting in’ to his school,” says Ron D, one of the editors who reviewed Rogers’ work. “The perspective and the thought he gives these matters make this a worthwhile read, especially since ‘bullying’ is such a hot topic these days. That makes this work relevant and interesting to other teens.”

“I’m Only Human After All,” is the first installment in a three-part series he is calling the Empowerment Series. Rogers explained that the second book will cover his later high school years and the third will address issues he has faced in college.

“The second book is more so about becoming an adult, me finding my own identity and what fits,” says Rogers. “College will be broader and cover more of the social issues – Race, stereotypes, gender differences… things that people put on to others.”

Rogers is hoping others will be inspired by his work. Students like Vivian Boykin, a senior computer science major at Southeastern who struggled with bullying growing up, understand the importance of the work that others like Rogers are putting in to helping teens.

“I could only imagine how hard it must have been for him to relive his experiences, in order to write this book,” says Boykin. “But the courage it takes to come forth and share your experiences will hopefully encourage teens who are going through similar situations to come forth and seek support. As long as people continue to raise awareness, we are on the right track to end bullying and abuse.”

“I’m Only Human After All,” touches on some serious issues that young adults face every day. Rogers believes that these topics are relevant to today’s young people and offers this advice to others who are struggling with issues like bullying,

“As human beings we all have the same birthright and we all deserve respect,” says Rogers. “If you are being bullied in any way shape or form take the steps necessary to handle the situation: Report it to authority figures and excommunicate them from your circle. Everyone deserves an equal chance.”
