Kay Manning's Plagiarism
Like every other author, I've read the stories about Kay Manning's plagiarism with horror and a little sadness.
I'm horrified that the systems that are creating a revolution for writers are making it so easy to get away with plagiarism.
Really Amazon.com? All you do is check a box saying you did't plagiarize the work? That's all? There are software programs that can identify plagiarism, maybe Amazon should invest and use it as part of their vetting processes.
Speaking as an author who had their work ripped off (by a friend no less) this is one of the most frustrating, heartbreaking things you can go through as an author. Not only have you been violated, but all your characters have been too.
I can't even imagine being told by Amazon, "Oh too bad. We took the post down, but we're not responsible." As ersatz publishers, I believe Amazon.com is culpable. As culpable as the New York Times was, when they printed Jayson Blair's work (the NYT's should be able to afford that software too).
On the other hand, I feel sad for Kay Manning. Oh, I just heard the collective "WHAT???!" from everyone reading those words.
Yes, what she did was wrong. Very wrong. Maybe it's the writer part of me that feels compassion for someone who has torn their world apart. I question if she were a struggling author who became desperate? If you're attending writer's groups (we know she was a member of RWA and Kiss of Death at least) you must have had some interest in doing it right. I mean why spend the money if your intention is to steal other author's work?
I know I will take heat for showing sympathy toward Kay Manning. It's the same feeling I get when I see other's self-destructing. Like when I saw Brittany Spears shave her head or Lindsey Lohan return to court time after time. I wanted to hug them, because I can feel their pain and humiliation.
They had to have known they were to blame for single-handedly dismantling their life. And so does Kay Manning.
Trust me, I hear the chorus of, "She's only sorry because she was caught." I have no argument against that point because I believe it's true. However, if you're a writer and you cannot find yourself in a position of compassion for Kay Manning, and the pain she has created for herself, then how can you create any characters with credibility? As a writer, you don't get the luxury of not seeing both sides. It's your job.
Allow me to reiterate that I do not condone what Kay Manning did, it was despicable, but I can feel the pain of making a choice that tears a world apart.

Just Keep Talking. Just Keep Talking.
The other day I was honored to be on Brittany & Meredith, LIVE! These two ladies are funny and accomplished women, and I confess to being so

WIN These Goodies!
nervous. Knowing that dead air is a radio killer, all I could think was, "just keep talking".
When the show was over I realized that I had completely blanked out. I didn't remember a word of what I had said. I just prayed that I hadn't made an ass out of myself.
The next day my boss was tee-hee-heeing on his side of our cubicle, so I instant messaged him, "Do I want to know what you're tittering about?" He sent back, "Listening to the show you were on last night."
My ears got warm and my heart started to race. What did I say? Was I a complete idiot?
He had to assure me that I didn't make a fool of myself and he confirmed that Brittany & Meredith are in fact VERY funny.
There's a giveaway being run by the show for a goodie bag that includes a signed copy of A Grand Murder, Crime Scene Band-Aides, a book bag, and a Katana letter opener (just like the murder weapon in the book!). To enter comment on Brittany & Meredith's Facebook Page under the giveaway post.
Good luck to all who enter! If you missed the show and you want to hear a reply you can download the podcast on iTunes by clicking here!
