Amazon First Reads - LAST DAY

I’m really honored that LAST DAY was chosen to be an Amazon First Read for January. That means that Amazon Prime members can download the e-book for free—and all other readers can buy it for $1.99. I loved writing this novel; it’s a bit different for me—a tale of domestic suspense, but with lots of familiar elements my readers will recognize. It takes place in Black Hall, on the Connecticut Shoreline (like so many of my books) and is about best friends, sisters, mothers and daughters, and the secrets under a family’s roof. I would love for you to read it and, if so moved, leave an unbiased review on Amazon or Goodreads.
From celebrated New York Times bestselling author Luanne Rice comes a riveting story of a seaside community shaken by a violent crime and a tragic loss.
Years ago, Beth Lathrop and her sister Kate suffered what they thought would be the worst tragedy of their lives the night both the famous painting Moonlight and their mother were taken. The detective assigned to the case, Conor Reid, swore to protect the sisters from then on.
Beth moved on, throwing herself fully into the art world, running the family gallery, and raising a beautiful daughter with her husband Pete. Kate, instead, retreated into herself and took to the skies as a pilot, always on the run. When Beth is found strangled in her home, and Moonlight goes missing again, Detective Reid can’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu.
Reid immediately suspects Beth’s husband, whose affair is a poorly kept secret. He has an airtight alibi—but he also has a motive, and the evidence seems to point to him. Kate and Reid, along with the sisters’ closest childhood friends, struggle to make sense of Beth’s death, but they only find more questions: Who else would have wanted Beth dead? What’s the significance of Moonlight?
Twenty years ago, Reid vowed to protect Beth and Kate—and he’s failed. Now solving the case is turning into an obsession . . .

From the EditorBlack Hall, Connecticut, is known as a safe place. A small seaside town free of violent crime. So when gallery owner Beth Lathrop is brutally murdered, Beth’s family and friends are left reeling. None more so than Beth’s sister, Kate. With the help of Detective Conor Reid, Kate will dig deep into Beth’s final weeks and days, their attention rarely deviating from Beth’s cheating and opportunistic spouse.
Because it’s always the husband. As we’ve learned from countless crime shows—and actual CDC data—when a woman is murdered, her partner is the likely culprit. So what do we make of a husband with an airtight alibi? Is there such a thing?
That is the question that led me to read page after page after page late into the night. I was completely engrossed in Luanne Rice’s twisted and heartrending story of a horrific murder and its aftermath...and the brutal secrets buried in a tranquil seaside town.
After five years writing young adult fiction, beloved New York Times bestselling author Luanne Rice has returned to her roots in compelling family drama for adults! And it is her best—and most thrilling—ever. Luanne has brilliantly combined elements of domestic and psychological suspense with police procedural, resulting in a book I read in one sitting.

Last Day

Intro From Luanne
I am so excited to show you the cover of my new novel, LAST DAY, coming out in February 2020! It's about a young mother's murder, her sister's search to know what happened, a valuable painting stolen not once but twice, and four women who have been best friends since childhood.
My brilliant friend Lee Child's quote is on the cover: "lovely, lyrical, and lethal". Coming from him--wow. What a great welcome to the thriller world! Although LAST DAY is about a terrible crime, it still has everything you've come to expect from my writing: family, friendship, a coastal setting (Black Hall, on the Connecticut shoreline, familiar to my readers.) I can't wait for you to read it. –Luanne Rice

Praise“Lovely, lyrical—and lethal. Luanne Rice turns her talents in a new direction and succeeds completely.” —Lee Child, #1 New York Times bestselling author
“Luanne Rice is the master of small towns with big secrets. With a deft touch, she draws us into a picture-postcard New England village, behind the closed doors of a well-loved home with its beautiful gardens and perfect family, only to expose the truths within. Surprising, powerful, a total page-turner.” —Lisa Scottoline, New York Timesbestselling author of Someone Knows
“In Last Day, Luanne Rice shows once again her unique gift for portraying the emotional landscape of a family. By adding a riveting thread of suspense, she proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that love and murder make brilliant bedfellows.” —Tess Gerritsen, New York Times bestselling author of The Shape of Night
“Last Day, by Luanne Rice, shines with its brilliant plot about four women friends, their families and loves, and, shockingly, a murder. Rice’s writing is flawless and fast, her characters are like the women I have coffee with, and the desire, violence, and betrayals shock me and remind me of Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies.” —Nancy Thayer, New York Times bestselling author of Surfside Sisters
“A dark family history. A deeply flawed marriage. The complicated tangle of the ties that bind. Luanne Rice writes with authenticity and empathy, unflinchingly exploring her characters and diving into the shadowy spaces where they hide their secrets. Like all great stories, Last Day is a compulsive, twisting mystery dwelling inside a searing portrait of what drives us, as riveting as it is human and true.” —Lisa Unger, New York Times bestselling author of The Stranger Inside
“A brutal murder, a failed marriage, secret lovers, and enough suspects to fill a room. The truth lies somewhere between betrayal and love. A compelling mystery you won’t put down or solve until the final pages.” —Robert Dugoni, New York Times and Amazon Charts bestselling author of the Tracy Crosswhite series
“I’ve long loved Luanne Rice for her trademark elegant style and her deep understanding of familial relationships, and she brings these superpowers with her as she delves into suspense. Last Day is a true page-turner, peopled by characters I care deeply about, with an ending I never saw coming.” —Joshilyn Jackson, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of Never Have I Ever
