Purchase EVERY LAST PROMISE!

Indiebound ~ Powell's Books ~ Barnes and Noble ~ Amazon

"Lyrically written and ebbing with suspense, the story of Kayla’s hometown implicates everyone involved for their silence and for the grotesque hero worship that guarantees it. Kayla’s no hero, either, and her journey to finding her truth is as authentically difficult as they come. Halbrook interleaves the stories of before and after chapter by chapter, leading characters and readers to the devastating conclusion. A devastating, important examination of the far-reaching, insidious nature of rape culture."
--Kirkus (starred review)

"EVERY LAST PROMISE is a powerful exploration of friendship and fear and what it means to stay silent in the face of injustice versus the high cost of speaking up. Kayla's search for redemption and homecoming after a night of horrific tragedy is deeply moving."
--Stephanie Kuehn, author of the Morris Award-winning Charm & Strange

Perfect for fans of Laurie Halse Anderson and Gayle Forman, Every Last Promise is a provocative and emotional novel about a girl who must decide between keeping quiet and speaking up after witnessing a classmate's sexual assault.
Kayla saw something at the party that she wasn't supposed to. But she hasn't told anyone. No one knows the real story about what happened that night—about why Kayla was driving the car that ran into a ditch after the party, about what she saw in the hours leading up to the accident, and about the promise she made to her friend Bean before she left for the summer.
Now Kayla's coming home for her senior year. If Kayla keeps quiet, she might be able to get her old life back. If she tells the truth, she risks losing everything—and everyone—she ever cared about.

Will
Maybe I'm too late. Maybe Zoe's dad stole all her fifteen years and taught her to be scared. I'll undo it. Help her learn to be strong again, and brave. Not that I'm any kind of example, but we can learn together. When the whole world is after you, sometimes it seems like you can't run fast enough.
Zoe
Maybe it'll take Will years to come to terms with being abandoned. Maybe it'll take forever. I'll stay with him no matter how long it takes to prove that people don't always leave, don't always give up on you.

“Raw, immediate, and utterly unflinching. Halbrook’s debut features complex characters, and attempting to puzzle them out makes for a thought-provoking read.” (ALA Booklist )

“A dark, romantic wild ride reminiscent of Thelma and Louise.” (Publishers Weekly )

“How do we love and what are the consequences? Kristin Halbrook paints an edgy and vivid portrait of two troubled teens on the run. This is a gracefully written, thought-provoking and absorbing debut. . . . I haven’t read a love story quite like it before, honestly.” (Courtney Summers, author of Cracked Up to Be, Some Girls Are, and Fall for Anything )

“Beautiful, heartbreaking, and exhilarating—NOBODY BUT US will have you holding your breath until the very last page.” (Kody Keplinger, author of The DUFF and A Midsummer’s Nightmare )

“An achingly believable love story about two teens outrunning a society that has failed them, hoping the lights at the end of the highway aren’t just a mirage. Tense, lyrical and heartbreaking; the kind of book that lingers a long time.” (Kirsten Hubbard, author of Wanderlove and Like Mandarin )

NOBODY BUT US Release Day!!!

It's a pretty exciting day here in the gloomy and dreary Pacific Northwest. Although others have spotted Nobody But Us out in the wild over the past weekend, today is the OFFICIAL release day! Woohoo!!

What does a release day actually mean?

It means I woke up to a whole lot of well wishes in my inbox and twitter feed. So many that I felt paralyzed, not knowing how to respond to them. Completely overwhelmed and rather emotional. Thank you all, a million times over, for the kind words.

It means there will be a day, sometime in the future, when I can relax. But today is not that day.

It means I'm going to share some review tidbits with you from PW and Booklist:

Halbrook debuts with a dark, romantic wild ride reminiscent of Thelma and Louise . . . Halbrook wisely avoids making her teenage lovers overly capable—Will and Zoe truly feel like two naïve teens on the run, making one mistake after another as they lose control over their situation. Emotions run high throughout, and Will’s fear of hurting Zoe more than she has already been hurt is especially potent. ~Publishers Weekly

Told in alternating first-person point of view, the novel feels raw, immediate, and utterly unflinching . . . Readers will be hoping against hope for a happy ending, although it becomes less and less clear what that would actually entail. Halbrook’s debut features complex characters, and attempting to puzzle them out makes for a thoughtprovoking read.~Booklist

It means the awesome OneFourKidLit, 2014's debuts, featured an interview with me on their blog. Thanks, Julie! I'm also on the fabulous Nova Ren Suma's blog as one of her featured January Debuts. You're amazing, Nova, thank you!

It means that out in the world of bookstores, someone(s) is seeing my book, checking out my cover, reading the back (and maybe the first page) and considering buying it. Thank you, if you get the book today! Thank you if you get it later! Thank you for considering the purchase at all!

It means I will be continuing to prep for Saturday's launch party. It's at the University Book Store, Mill Creek (that's Seattle area) at 11:00. I'd love to see a zillion of you there! I ordered canvas totes and am filling three of them to the brim with goodies for a giveaway. I'm also trying to decide what kind(s) of munchies to have. I like munchies.

It means I'm going to start working on my taxes. I know, I know. I just like having them out of the way.

It means when someone asks what I do, and I say I'm an author, I don't have to say "You can't get my book just yet."

I'm hoping it means I can take a nap at some point, but I probably won't.

Thank you readers and friends, for taking this journey with me. I love you immensely!

Finding Me Out and About

I just wanted to post a few links to places on the internet you can find me. There are lots of guest posts and interviews coming up this month in anticipation of Nobody But Us's release, so I'll add as they come along. I'll also be sure to post the schedule for the NBU blog tour that runs January 21st to 28th. Finally, I have added a couple of small things that will get bigger announcements soon to the calendar page.

Cheers!

I'm featured, along with Erica Lorainne Scheidt, as one of two highly anticipated January 2013 debut releases on Nova Ren Suma's blog.

At The Reclusive Reader, I chat about family holiday traditions and pass along my grandma's recipe for cream cheese cookies.

Hannah at The Irish Banana Review interviewed me with some awesomely thoughtful questions!

I talk about my cover--the process, the result, the love--over at The Lucky 13s blog.

Publishers Weekly gives Nobody But Us a great review!

Nobody But Us is in *seriously* good company as one of Kari's 2013 Droolworthy Must Reads at A Good Addiction. There are so many books on that list I want. *pines*
