The Year is 2013... My Year!
This year, the year of 2013, is going to be the year that I really make a name for myself as an author. I will be releasing three more novels under "Joseph Eastwood" - Salem Gates, the first in the Caldwell Witches series. Clandestine, the first in the Night Falls series. And then Noctem, the second novel in the Blood Luminary series.
Noctem is the only one with a release date: 19th April 2013!
I created a banner for my page up there ^^ I'm also thinking of doing a new design for the blog.
Below, is a vlog on the year of 2013! So, check it out!

Call for Book Bloggers and Readers!
Hello!
This is my call to you lovely people of the interwebs. I am looking for people who are willing to review e-copies of my novel, Lumen. My aim is to get 50 reviews before April, when Noctem (Blood Luminary, #2) is released.

Lumen Blurb:
On an island estranged from the rest of the world are people, people living by the teachings of the Luminary; seven pillars on which their existence rests and all belief was created. These souls have abilities that would make most mortal minds doubt their sanity, and at times it may come as a blessing, but the nature of their belief is based on a curse.
Daniel is going through his final transition, and once complete, he will be able to manipulate the bonds of his energy more freely. Not everything falls so smoothly, and after a near-death experience, Daniel is admitted into the island's only private school, a privilege he is not allowed to forget. While trying to fit in he opens mysteries and troubles beyond the life he came from, and they threaten everything and everyone he once believed in.
Could Daniel come from those legends he was taught about?
If you do review a copy of Lumen, then yay! You are awesome!

I have also written on my Facebook page: Joseph's Writing, that the next 20 reviews I get on Lumen, I will be sending out paperbacks copies of Lumen, or Noctem (available in April) out.
The official release date of Noctem, is April 19th, the date that I would like the 50 reviews for.
Also, if you would like to be a beta reader for me, include "beta" in the title of your email, as I will be sending out some awesome stuff to my betas soon!
Email at: JosephEastwood@ymail.com
(update: a review has been posted whilst writing this post, so now, the next 19 reviews!)

Joe's Journal - 1st January 2013
If you "like" my Facebook page, then it's likely that you saw me post a status about doing journals, and journalling my progress with writing, and publishing etc. and if all goes to plan, I will be writing one of these every night before I go to sleep. So yes, almost 11pm and I can barely keep my eyes open, so I'm forcing myself to do this... to set an example to myself for the rest of the year.
Day 1 of 365
Today was a great start to the New Year (also, a happy New Year to you, I hope it's good to you!) as I wrote 3,152 words into Salem Gates, the first novel in the Caldwell Witches series, and there are only 3 or 4 chapters left to be written, so hopefully tomorrow, or Thursday, Salem Gates will be complete - as far as the first draft goes. I also did some extra planning for the second novel in the series as well. It's going to be awesome!
And as I promised, I shared an excerpt from Clandestine (it's still unedited, so be gentle), one of my new novels, the start of the Night Falls series, which I hope will be awesome! And depending on how the year looks, the second in the series could also be released in the same year, as this series has been the one that a lot of you guys have shown the most interest in.
I hope that you've all had amazing days, both with your writing and with your families and friends - that's day 1 over. I only hope day 2 can compete. Oh, and I almost hit 88k hits on this blog! WOOP!
Let me know if there is anything you want me to blog about. That could be tips, or excerpts etc.

Clandestine - Excerpt [unedited]
Happy New Year guys! As promised, here's an excerpt from Clandestine! ENJOY!
She slowed down and
stopped, pulling the keys out of the ignition and putting them in her pocket.
She turned in her seat and faced me.
“You can’t be in a mood,
Brandon. I don’t know how you feel to leave your family, heck, I rarely ever
leave this place, and when I do, it’s to go to another Harper village.” I
watched as she moved her hand to mine and stroked it, like it would somehow
make me forgive her for throwing my phone out of the window.
“It’s the only thing I
have that connects me to my family. What if I can’t speak to my mum again?” I
asked.
She smiled at me. “That’s
a stupid thought, besides, your mum know where we are if she wanted to come and
visit. This is for your safety.”
“So you keep saying.”
I looked up and noticed
her roll her eyes. I was being a little bit childish now, and I could feel it,
but I liked it, for some reason I felt like I was able to act like a child,
like something inside merited me being able to be childish.
“I have a surprise for
you, well, Granddad told me to bring you here, it’s a great place.” She opened
the door and climbed out, so I followed.
We walked down the
makeshift path and the forest around us grew thicker. Kari looked at me and
smiled.
“You’re going to love it,”
she said.
“Why?” I asked, giving in.
She opened her mouth to
speak again, and then stopped and nodded to a huge opening in front of us. I
turned and found it, sitting there, it was peace. A huge lake, so calm, and it
was warm, and besides it there was a huge house built into a tree.
“This is where you dad
came to think, he also wanted his children to have it. And you’re his only
child, so this is yours,” she said.
“More importantly,” I
smiled, “why the hell is it so warm?”
“Your dad could manipulate
the atmosphere.”
I bit the inside of my
lip; the word could hit me. He could do it, but he can’t anymore; he’d dead. I
sucked in a deep breath and headed for the tree house. It was huge, it looked
like a wooden house had just fallen on top of a tree and now the branches
intertwined around it.
“Oh, I have something
inside for you as well,” Kari shouted after me.
I reached the trunk and
found a ladder sprung from a door out of the bottom of the house. I climbed up
it and pushed the hatchet. It was pitch black, and behind the darkness a loud
screech sounded.
“Hello,” I shouted.
A pair of curtains drew
back, revealing the man from yesterday, Harry. He smiled at me, and then my eyes
fixed on something else. I slowly pushed myself up into the house, eyeing the
person who sat in the cage with their shoulders hunched up and their back
dipped whilst they stood there on their hands and knees.
“What’s that?” I asked,
edging away from it.
“That’s how we’re going to
find out just how latent your abilities are,” Kari said, popping her head up.
“But what is it?” I
couldn’t stop looking at it, and from the misty eyed look following me around
the room, I knew that the thing couldn’t stop looking at me either.
“He’s a slicer vamp, and
Harry is his owner.”
“A puritan, I have control
over my lust and I’m not at all like the slicers,” Harry butted in, smiling at
me. And then I noticed it in him as well, that glared over gaze and the toothy
smile.
I smiled back. “Vampires
aren’t re—” I swallowed my words. “Of course they are.”
“We’ve already met,
haven’t we, Brandon?” Harry said, bridging the gap and walking towards me with
his hand out. I shook it, his skin wasn’t cold and he didn’t try and kill me.
That was nice of him.
“I think I understand what
the hunt was all about now,” I said, butting my lips together.
“You know about the hunt?”
Kari asked.
“No, but, I guess it has
something to do with these,” I said, nodding towards the two vampires in the room,
and then it dawned on me, this house was huge. And this was the first room; I
noticed doors leading off, and to the right beside the wall were a set of
stairs leading to another floor.
“It’s a huge house,” Harry
said, winking at me.
I gulped. “Yeah, who lives
here?”
“Nobody, it belonged to
your dad, he made it when he was with your mum,” Kari said. “Now it just
collects dust.”
“Can I have a look
around?” I immediately asked.
“No,” she replied. “I have
to make sure your latent ability is still there.”
This family was full of
deflation. I puffed out my cheeks and sighed. “I take it, he’s involved,” I
pointed to the man contorted in the cage.
Kari nodded. “Get him
out,” she said.
Harry opened the cage and
the pale skinned man crawled out slowly. He was wearing a pair of dirty
underwear and they were held up by a tight knotted piece of rope around his
waist. The man looked up at me, and I saw his eyes dart off in all different
directions.
“What am I supposed to do
for this test,” I asked, backing up whilst the other two walked behind it.
“Nothing,” Kari said with
a grin.
I glanced back at the man
and as I made eye contact with his dull sunken eyes he pounced. He hit me and I
fell back as he gripped a hold of my shoulder blades and pushed me hard against
the wooden floor.
I felt my body vibrate and
for a moment I thought my phone was still in my pocket. It tingled in my palms
as I tried to push him off and flex my shoulder blades, but he didn’t budge, he
growled and hissed, while breathing a disgusting smell in my face. I tried to
keep from gagging or retching, but it made me push harder, until I gave up, and
a tickle popped inside my head.
There was an instant sigh
of relief as the pain around my neck and torso vanished. I opened my eyes and
found myself lying on the ground, and then to the sound of a large whining
sound as the vampire retreated to its cage.
I picked my head up and
frowned. “I thought he was trying to kill me.”
“Great!” Kari shouted and
started to clap. “Your ability is surfacing.”
“What is it?”
“I don't know, but whatever it is, you scared this one off, he almost went flying,” she giggled.
Harry grinned as he
watched the men in the cage shake. “I think we’re going to put him down.”
“What?” I asked. Putting
him down, I continued to repeat to myself. It made my throat swell inside my
mouth. They were going to put him down, a person.
“They’re going to kill
him,” Kari said. “It’s fine though, he probably needs to be put out of his
misery.”
I glanced down at him,
knowing that he was going to die gave me a new found hope for him, I kind of
wanted him to live now. And even though he wasn’t human, he still wasn’t an
animal either.

Daily Word Count Diet!

I've always known that writing a little bit a day is better than not writing anything at all, even if what you do write is later erased.
It's simple math: write something every day and it will add up.
If you go around calling yourself a writer, and don't do any writing, it's a bit of a let down feeling, to you, and probably to the people who are waiting to see what you create next.
For example, if you write 500 words a day, and there are 365 days in the year. If you stick to that, you will have written 182,500 words. That is four minimum-length (40k) novels.
And there are no excuses to not being able to write 500 words a day and still call yourself a writer. Depending on what kind of writer you are that is... for me, I am a planner, I plan everything out... and that way I will always have something to write when it comes down to putting my fingers on my laptop. (Or pen to paper.)
I do write something everyday. Although some days I write more than 500 words, which is what I've been doing for the past couple of days as I've been on Christmas break, so I've been churning out 3,000 words a day. And yes, I will be the first to admit that none of it is awesome right now, but that's the importance of drafting... so as long as you have the bare bones of the story out, there shouldn't be any issues with drafting it.
Just don't delete anything. I see so many people say that they've deleted so many words after writing them the night before and I'm like this...

Ha! I hope you're all having a great day!
Do you have any daily word count goals?

Secret to Writing More!
I'm constantly searching for something that will allow me to write more, or feel inspired for longer. And I haven't had much luck, until almost a month ago when I put my début novel, Lumen, into print... and something clicked, it was something great.
It all started when I had to transfer Lumen from the A4 word document format to the formatted 8" x 5.25" trade paperback format. (Which you can get from CreateSpace when you're creating a title through them. It's real nifty like that.) When I eventually changed everything the page numbers jumped, from 230 to 341. I guess it also helps if you're good at using Microsoft Word, but don't be disheartened if you're not, I'm sure that my secret to writing more can still help you.
“I believe luck is preparation meeting opportunity. If you hadn’t been prepared when the opportunity came along, you wouldn’t have been lucky.”
― Oprah Winfrey
Preparation. That is all I do. I prepare for what I want. And what I want is something solid, something to hold... what I want, are paperbacks, rows and rows of glossy paperbacks with my name on the front of each cover. So I prepare for that.
I write in the format for a paperback book. That is my secret to writing more.
I don't know why. I just do.
I think because the pages are smaller than an A4 sheet, you feel like you're doing more pages (and you are!), and if that's not encouraging, that I don't know what is.
Yesterday morning, I watched my page total continue to grow as I typed myself into a coma (only joking, although by the end I was so drained) the page total shot up over 50 pages, and 10k in word count. (That could also have something to do with the fact that I do plan what I am going to be writing before I write it. However, I have to say that writing into the paperback format is helpful!)
I know that this might not work for everyone, but while you're on your quest to find that perfect medium where you can write and write... you can always try this.
I'm proud that I do all my own formatting. It makes the end result that little bit more satisfying when I hold it in my hands.
From an idea until the finished paperback, I do it all. And that's the way I like it. I guess that's why I like being an independent author.
Try it out and tell me what you think of it.
It helps out, a lot, if you are eventually planning on putting your writing out into the world as a paperback.
All the best guys. I hope you have a great week, and an awesome new year!

Noctem - Prologue [unedited]
I
t started over one-thousand years ago, but what changed
eight-hundred years later, were the rules. The rules of the game were simple; you
had to stay away from Templar Island, and you had to leave everything that grew
there alone. Even family.
The rules changed when one of their own decided
that he couldn’t deal with all the rules. He’d given up, and he’d told others
that it was inhumane for someone to
possess so much power. Inhumane, he
would cry.
Christopher lifted the black top hat from his
head and threw it to the cobbles on the ground. He shook his head and a tear
dripped down his cheeks. He wiped his face and spat at his hat. “It’s all about
the status,” he mumbled. “Status.”

house and at his feet. “Don’t leave. Please, don’t leave.”
He turned and shook his head. “I’m sorry,” he murmured.
“Sorry.” He glanced down to Greta and pushed his top set of teeth into his
bottom lip. “But I know what’s going to happen if I stay like this,” he said.
“I’m so so so sorry.”
“No, please,” she cried. “Marry me!” She pulled
herself up on his pants.
He shook his head and pushed her away. She slipped
along the wet cobbles and fell back down to her knees.
“I’m pregnant!”
He shook his head and bit harder on his lip.
“Don’t leave me! I cannot live without you!”
He snarled at her. His hand by his side
quivered and he slapped her across the face. “Leave me!” he snapped.
Greta stood still. The tears that begged to
bleed out of her eyes turned her face red with frustration. She gritted her
teeth and rushed back into the house. “I’m keeping the house!” she finally
cried and stood in the doorway.
“Good!” he turned and shouted. A smile formed
on his face. He was finally happy. “It’s no use to me anymore. Keep it, Greta. You’ll
need it for the child.” He pulled at his tie and wiped the tears from his face.
He untied the tie, and unbuttoned his shirt.
“What are you doing?” she cried harder.
Christopher took a deep breath and turned
around to see Greta. She was holding on to the door as she trembled on her
feet.
“I can’t—do—this!” He fished around in his
pocket and found a silver letter opening knife. He raised it to his face and it
glinted in the dull light.
“We can go and see a head doctor,” she pleaded.
“Please, let me help you.”
He fingers were stiff around the knife. He stuck
it in his chest. The blood started to soak the cloth around his body. But he didn’t
fall, he didn’t waver. He stayed standing. He jabbed the knife into his chest
again. And again. There was no pain. Not even a tingle or a flicker of it.
“We’re having a baby,” she screamed. “You can’t
leave us all alone.”
He turned around to Greta. His chest had
several slice holes and blood dripped from each of them. He looked over at her.
“Have the child and leave, take it away from me,” he said and his form
flickered out. He’d vanished. He’d teleported away.
Greta cried after him. Falling into the doorway
beneath the shakes in her calf muscles.
Christopher formed in an alley way of a
bustling city. He looked around to see rats squirm beneath his feet. Rain fell.
He dropped the knife and glanced down at his bloody palms. He washed them in
the rain water.
“Hey, are you okay?” a man asked from behind
Christopher. He turned to face the man. “Are you bleeding?”
“It’s nothing,” he smiled and tightened his overcoat.
“How old are you?” he asked.
“Are you sure that you’re okay?” he asked.
Christopher smiled. “I’m fine. So, how old are
you?”
“Twenty-four,” the man grinned, “just turned.
Why? Do you have a pretty daughter.”
His smile grew. “Something better. Much better.”
“Better than that?”
“A life,” Christopher said. “A new life.”
The man chuckled. “I’ll bite,” he said. “Go on,
it sure beats the family business,” he laughed.
Christopher nodded. “What’s your name?” he
asked.
“Horatio Hanley,” he replied.

Salem Gates! Cover Art Makeover!

Originally, it started off as The Salem Gates and then I cut "the" from it. I also realised something with previous covers, I was always trying to be too literal with them, I always tried to show a set of railings to represent the gated community.
Here you have it, the new and improved piece of cover art!
Do you like it? Because I absolutely love it!
I've also used a working blurb, just something to have on the back of the cover whilst I'm still working on it, so the blurb you are about to read will probably change by the time Salem Gates is published.
When will it be published? You scream my way.
Well, I have a date on my calender, but for now, I'll stick with spring/summer time. (Also, Noctem will be released on April 19th, so I don't want to release them both close together.)

Salem Gates is a full-length novel in a series of three novels and two novellas. (But if you'd checked the page I have titled "The Caldwell Witches" then you probably already knew that.)
Don't forget to add it to your "to-read" pile on Goodreads! Link >>here<<
What do you think?

Vampires, Werewolves, Witches, oh my! But What's Next?

It is becoming harder to create something that's quite new and unique within the fantasy genre. Vampires, werewolves, witches, all have been done, and then redone... and they will continue to be written about.
But, what I want to know is, what next?
And the only thing I can really think of is MERMAIDS and MERMEN! It is the only answer. (For me it is anyway.)
I can remember when I was little and I stayed at my nana's house on the weekends and we'd watch The Little Mermaid (still my favourite Disney film), and I could always remember wanting to have a fin, and be able to swim with sea creatures and, of course, breathing under water.
I have seen a few mermaid-esque stories surfacing and it's made me think about the stories I've put on the backburner so that I could focus on my witchy and my vampire ones. I have a really awesome mermaid story to tell. So watch this space of the internet as Joe is getting his mermaid pelt on.
I actually have a short story: Bait, which has mermaids, witches, and vampires. It is only 20 pages or so, but it is the beginning of a longer piece. You can get this over at Amazon.
What do you think of mermaids & mermen?
