A Little Encouragement Goes a Long Way

I recently stepped way out of the confinements of my comfort zone and began taking class once a week at "P.O.W.E.R.," an all female fitness studio owned and operated by one of my many shero's, Janine McGann.  I have had multiple compiling injuries this year, and haven't done much of anything this summer.  I thought I was going to collapse 15 minutes into the class.  The competitive and Good Girl side of me was shining bright.  I had on my game face and wouldn't dare let anyone know I was on ...

Why Are Our Girls So Angry?

On one hand, an 11-year-old girl reacts to people gossiping about her by threatening to put a gun in their mouths and boasting about how jealous they are of her. On the other, two young women taunt each other and fight over a guy until one of them is dead.

What do the two have in common?

Both situations are about girls believing the same thing: When you are ridiculed or threatened, the acceptable way to express your anger is to annihilate the other person.

This makes a lot of people wring their ...

Book Review: Not All Black Girls Know How to Eat

When you hear the term "eating disorder," what image comes to mind?  For most, it's an emaciated white female who appears to be on the brink of collapsing. In her autobiography, Not All Black Girls Know How to Eat, author Stephanie Covington Armstrong outright dispels that belief.  Covington Armstrong grew up hungry, poor, and fatherless in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn.  Unable to provide adequate care and stability, her emotionally neglectful mother turned she and her 3 sisters over to the foster...

Jessi Slaughter: A Cyberbullying Case None of Us are Taking Seriously

Last week, I once again came across a case of internet use gone horribly wrong, this time in the form of an eleven-year-old girl on YouTube.  For those of you who haven't heard, Jessica Leonhardt, who goes by the screenname "Jessi Slaughter", was a regular video blogger on YouTube.  What started as a few lighthearted videos about shopping and boys, quickly disintegrated into violent and explicit videos containing threats, and much more profanity than you'd ever expect a preteen to know, let a...

5 Ways to Prevent and Stop Cyberbullying

Family Circle Magazine

September 2010

I work with a lot of amazing tweens and teens, and most of the time the good I witness more than compensates for the cruelty I also see happening among kids. But after the Phoebe Prince suicide in January 2010, I have to say, I hit a huge low. And then I found out that some of Phoebe's tormentors continued to ridicule her on Facebook after her death. That just sent me over the edge. All I could think was, "Have young people completely abandoned any s...

Did Realities of Raising Teens Scare Some Moms at BlogHer?

For the last two days, I competed for women's attention against free foot massages, hair blowouts, food and cocktails as part of Unilever's PentHOUSE at the BlogHer 2010 conference in New York City.

Nestled between the cocktails and massages, I was there to talk to mommy bloggers about the work I do with Unilever's "Don't Fret the Sweat" campaign and give tips to parents about raising healthy and confident tweens and teens. I met incredible women and had great conversations—it was an all...

Should I Keep Waiting for My Ex?

Rosalind Wiseman answers a question from Carlos, who recently reconnected with his ex.  The girl is currently dating another guy, and swears she really wants to call it off so she can be with Carlos… but she hasn't broken up with her boyfriend yet.  Carlos wants to wait for her, but should he?  Does she really want to be with him or is she just enjoying having the best of both worlds?

I'm 13, Not 30!

Rosalind Wiseman answers a question from Elise, a girl who recently turned 13 years old.  In the days following her birthday, Elise's mom told her that she'd now be responsible for finding a job and paying for most (if not all) or her necessities.  Is her mom being unreasonable, or should a little more responsibility be expected in her teenage years?
