For the next few days the Kindle version of my book, The Mustache He’s Always Wanted but Could Never Grow, is 80% off on Amazon, which means you can download the sumbitch for only $1.99!

Karl Wolff (CCLaP) says it’s “Vulgar, fetishistic, and ferocious….”

The Next Best Book Blog recommends it to “…those who enjoy reading about the downward swirl of bottom-rung humanity in the toilet of life.”

Ben Arzate calls it “a short story collection about drunken losers.”

Big Humor, Big Sadness, Big Truth

Big World

Big World by Mary Miller
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I could say that Mary Miller’s Big World is a wonderful collection, which it is, and that the stories in it remind me of how I feel when reading stories by Charles Baxter (or Bobbie Ann Mason), and they are all excellent because Baxter (and Mason) seems to only write excellent stories. I could say that if I taught a writing class, which is a wildly hilarious idea (the thought of me teaching anything!), I would add stories from Big World into the curriculum because they encompass everything one should want a short story to have, which is to say they are truthful, funny and sad, and many other things also. I could say a lot about this book, really, but I won’t. What I will say is that I recommend Big World to people who like reading strong writing about flawed (yet remarkably interesting) characters, and I recommend it highly because that’s how this book rolls.

Review: 'Witch Piss' by Sam Pink | Brian Alan Ellis

thatlitsite:

Rontel, Sam Pink’s brilliant previous novel, was narrated by a nameless guy who wanders Chicago meeting random eccentrics no match for the maddening absurdities percolating in his time-bomb mind. In Witch Piss, however, these musings tick faintly as the eccentrics run the asylum.

days slip away like drips from a leaking faucet: Book Review: The Mustache He's Always Wanted but Could Never Grow by Brian Alan Ellis

days slip away like drips from a leaking faucet: Book Review: The Mustache He's Always Wanted but Could Never Grow by Brian Alan Ellis :

The stories all feature people whose lives are on the brink of falling apart, are falling apart, or have completely fallen apart. All of there stories are related with a dark and dry sense of humor that keeps things from getting too depressing.

Overall, The Mustache He’s Always Wanted but Could Never Grow is a solid collection of sad short stories about sad people with sad lives. I would recommend this book, especially to fans of Charles Bukowski, Noah Cicero, and alt-lit in general.

Thanks, Ben Arzate, for the excellent review on your killer blog.

The great minds over at The Round Up Writer’s Zine decided to ask me some questions, so I answered them with things like: “Usually on my back with the shades down and my pants off. No?” and “I like really profound junk.” YOLO

TNBBC's The Next Best Book Blog: Book Review: The Mustache He's Always Wanted But Could Never Grow:

Brian Alan Ellis “doesn’t have much hope for the human race. He doesn’t see us in vivid technicolor. Rather, to him, humanity is drenched in darkness, hidden in shadow, and exuding guilt and sin.”
