"Kira's Beard Will Kick Your Ass" by Brian Alan Ellis now live @ CROSSED OUT MAGAZINE
My latest story, “Kira’s Beard Will Kick Your Ass,” is now live via Crossed Out Magazine. A story about a kick-ass woman with a kick-ass beard. A story to make a mother proud.
Kira has a kick-ass beard. It’s like a fuzzy bundle of awesome roundhouse kicked her in the face. It’s what she’ll be remembered for. No doubt about it. The possibilities of having a kick-ass beard like hers are endless. I’ve tried counting them and it’s no use. Endless.
Kira wanted a beard ever since she was six. She saw a ZZ Top video on MTV and it was all over. She thought it was the coolest and wondered why woman didn’t have beards. It was a big concern. Soon Kira started drawing beards on pictures of woman she’d see in books and magazines. Her Mom would ask why she put hair on Cinderella’s face with crayon and Kira would say, “Because it makes Cinderella a bad-ass bitch.”

Review: Black Cloud by Juliet Escoria | Brian Alan Ellis
![]()
Juliet Escoria is a witchy woman, and Black Cloud, her aptly titled debut collection of (autobiographical?) stories, punctures deep into the heart of drug and sexual abuse, and casts a harrowing spell on the reader that, like her characters, will not easily break:
We went to sleep, together but alone, that night. We did no eye gazing at all. Just stared at the backs of our own eyelids, an act that doesn’t take and gives nothing to no one.
This is not an Oprah Book Club selection. These are twelve soul-smashing vignettes, each prefaced by an ominous word: RESENTMENT, APATHY, DISGUST, REVENGE, and so on.
I reviewed Juliet Escoria's debut story collection, Black Cloud, for That Lit Site. The book is killer, and it comes out today from Civil Coping Mechanisms, so YOLO your ass on over to Amazon or something and get it: BUY KILLER BOOK HERE!
