So, I was on another podcast

It’s been a while since I last got interviewed… and I was certainly more sober the last time…

The wonderful Joseph Bendoski invited me to speak about Touch Sensitive on his Start Writing podcast – unfortunately the time difference meant that I had been drinking for a couple of hours before we started talking, so I kinda ramble and lose track of my point a little bit.

But, y’know, at least I didn’t start ranting about the government, state of the world, or race/gender/orientation/inequality –...

On female characters

This morning I was sent a video about the trope “born sexy yesterday”, and that made me think about the female characters in my own work…

Don’t know about you guys, but I’ll never be able to look at The Fifth Element the same way again… In fact, it’s kinda marred by the gross infantilization – and sexualization of infantilization – that previously just felt like a comedic bit. A device that added to the narrative, the emotional arc, and made my cry every time Leeloo realised the might she...

For the longest time, fictional people had better character arcs than I…

I try not to binge-watch, but I devoured Girlboss in the space to two nights, and it left me with thoughts about how characters grow… and how I’ve grown.

For a little while, I cut trailers, and that’s an amazing trailer – technically full of ‘spoilers’, but who gives a damn. Plus, it typifies what this long ramble will go into…

In books / TV / movies etc, there’s the idea that characters have an arc. They go on a journey, whether it be emotionally or literally, hit peaks and troughs, and...

Breaking story breaking

As you might know, my background is movies and television, and breaking story was always my favourite part of the job.

I don’t quite know how to describe the feeling of discovering where stories of your own making are going.

Sitting there with your second or sixth coffee of the day, staring at the breakdown, the cursor flashing in a constant tick-tock as the seconds of your life flash by. Then suddenly your jaw drops as you realise something massive, the other patrons in the coffee shop stari...
