Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Ernst Happel Stadion, Vienna, Austria, 12 July 2012

Believe it or not, I avoided Springsteen in the stadiums during the Born In The USA era. I saw some arena shows, and then waved goodbye for a little while as people who never paid attention to Bruce Springsteen before (and in many cases actively ridiculed me for my interest) ran off to buy tickets to Giants Stadium. On the other hand, I was always so entranced with that iconic Neal Preston photo from July 4, 1985 at Wembley Stadium, crowd alive in the extreme, and while I had seen other artis...

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, 11 July, 2012, Synot Tip Arena, Prague, Czech Republic

If you want the good review of Prague, go to Backstreets.com and read Glenn’s, as it’s far more concise than I could possibly manage. We arrived in Prague from Paris, deliberately skipping Zurich so we could have extra time in Prague. That meant that when we found out that there was a queue at the arena on Monday, we could head down and get numbers and spend the next two and a half days on the outskirts of Prague, sitting in a parking lot and waiting for GA line check-ins, riding a tram and w...

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Palais Omnisports de Paris Bercy, 5 July 2012

Around 8:55pm, when there was still no sign of the E Street Band, one hour after ticket time, I said something like, “This had better be the best setlist in the world tonight.” It was hot, crowded, it had started to pour unexpectedly right around 5pm, and it was time for the show to start.

Who could have known what the second night in Paris was going to be like? There was a setlist, apparently, which got tossed to the wayside rapidly, as Bruce called audible after audible, hitting the right n...

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Paris, 4 July 2012

Cherche place. That’s what the Parisian scalpers write on the signs they walk around holding, so they don’t have to expend energy with the French version of “Who’s got tickets?” or “Anyone selling?” The GA line is the same, the fans are the same, the homemade t-shirts are the same, the couples wearing matching ones shirts are the same, the one guy wearing his flag bandanna so proudly you can’t even bring yourself to make fun of him is there too. It could have been any Springsteen show anywher...

The Gaslight Anthem, Live On Letterman

photo.JPG

As part of the crowd that joined the TGA fan club on day one* I got to go to the “Live At Letterman” taping at the Ed Sullivan Theater tonight, for a live webcast. The band were the musical guest, and then they emptied the theater out and filled it back up with friends, family, some VIP’s, and us, the great unwashed. The band played a brisk 45 minute set, which you can watch right here.

The fact that you can watch it yourself means there is little point in me telling you about it, but I will...

Saying goodbye to the Big Man

IMG_0448

A year ago I had to sit down and figure out how to write Clarence Clemons’ obituary for Backstreets, which remains one of the hardest things I have ever done. (It’s at the bottom of that page.)

Most news orgs have staff to write obituaries of famous or significant figures in advance, while others use the occasion of serious illness to get one ready and prepared, because (as I know well from my day gig) it will happen on a night/weekend/holiday when you’re operating at half staff or people aren...

Tel Aviv, 1993, me, and the Afghan Whigs

I moved to Israel in the summer of 1988. The specific reasons why are complicated and irrelevant now, mostly; I was young and wanted an adventure. I thought it would all work out okay, and it did. Miraculously, despite only knowing how to say “orange juice” in Hebrew, I got a job within two weeks after arriving. The ad in the Jerusalem Post said “Wanted: Young person with good English and interest in popular music.” The job was Label Manager of Warner/Elektra/Atlantic (which included Geffen &...
