Review: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Consol Energy Center, Pittsburgh, PA, 10-27-12

A Saturday night show in the Rust Belt should open with something like “Don’t Look Back” into “Candy’s Room” into “Ties That Bind,” you know? Those songs were in your face, a declaration, a statement of purpose. Pittsburgh is a flat out, die hard rock and roll town (or at least that’s how I think of it) and it was a loud and mostly enthusiastic crowd meeting the E Street Band front and center tonight. Bruce was pumped, and the band had good energy – Max tight and crisp, Nils loud and sharp, b...

Largehearted Boy “Book Notes”

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book.

Caryn Rose paints a definitive portrait of Bruce Springsteen’s current relationship with his European fans (and the fans with him) in Raise Your Hand: Adventures of an American Springsteen Fan in Europe. Rose’s encyclopedic knowledge of Springsteen’s music and mythology combined with her keen critical eye and estimable storytelling skill make this a must-read for any...

New press for “Raise Your Hand” in The Record

Caryn Rose’s e-book takes fans on Bruce Springsteen’s summer tour in Europe

YOU’LL LIKE THIS BOOK IF: You can’t get enough Bruce, you’ve always been curious about the European concert experience or you want to compare her observations with your own. This is not the upcoming Peter Carlin Ames epic biography, “Bruce.” This is one experienced, educated fan’s experience.

The Ledge Podcast Appearance

I was the guest of music historian (some say ‘guru’ and aren’t that far off) Scott Hudson on his podcast “The Ledge” this week. We talked about the new book and I programmed a list of 22 live songs from the European tour as part of the broadcast. Check out the tracklist, listen or download now!

Little Kids Rock honoring Steve Van Zandt

“Steven is the part of my brain that always wants more.. More…louder…”

— Backstreets Magazine (@backstreetsmag) October 17, 2012

Many words will be written about this night in its entirety, but right now I just want to talk about the highlights for me, personally. I was up in the balcony, which had to be 80% die-hard Southside fans, if not more, reminding me of the old adage that you can tell a Southside fan because they hope that Steve (not Bruce) will show up.

I was never a Southside diehard,...

(Waiting To) Hear One Of The Who: Pete Townshend in conversation with Jann Wenner

Mr. Peter Townshend

Pete Townshend with Jann Wenner, Barnes & Noble Union Square, 10/9/12

As part of the promotional go-round for Townshend’s biography, Who I Am, he made a stop at Barnes & Noble this evening for a Q&A, with Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner in the interrogator’s seat. Pete could have been crabby or it could have been the two of them congratulating each other on how great they are, but it was a genuinely thoughtful, solid 45 minutes of conversation–followed by two songs perform...
