Each has huge problems at the beginning of the story and each has different ways of handling those problems. Juliana's perpetually happy outlook would seem totally wrong for Robert's need to atone for sins he didn't even commit. However as each is challenged to the brink and their respective outlooks are nearly broken, they find strength in each other to solve their problems. I love fiercely independent characters who learn that self-reliance is good but not everything. (less)
