The Old Town on the other side of the river was like a completely different world. Gone were neat pavements and pruned hedges, replaced with the rattle and chatter of a working city that burst through each crooked cobble and foggy window. The sky criss-crossed with banners of washing, and Cait eyed the tenements warily as they craned their long, brown necks over the street below.

The city of Thorterknock is inspired by Edinburgh, consisting of an Old Town and a New Town divided by the River Cath. I always knew I wanted to draw inspiration from Scotland’s capital, and I had such a fun time contrasting the bustling and ancient Old Town with the modern and very demure very mindful New Town. Thorterknock really feels like two entities to me, and I was conscious of creating a divide in class and community that represents the wider divide between Storran and Afren within the book.

Song of the Stag is available on Ringwood Publishing, Amazon, and Waterstones!

thatwavephenomenon:

‘I hate the dawn will come scene it is so cringe’ yes, yes it is and this is exactly why I think it is also good! This is not a scene where you’re supposed to feel awestruck by the song or whatever!! You are SUPPOSED TO BE UNCOMFORTABLE!! This is a scene written to make you react as your character probably would to becoming a symbol rather than a person. This is THE moment where everyone gathered around YOU sing in unison that you are Something Other, Something More. The moment where your character may realize just How Much this all is, or think that it’s ridiculous, because they cannot be All That Mighty, because they are just a person, but no, not anymore. 'I wish we could skip it’ NO!! No, you cannot escape the scene, because you can’t escape the crowd around you, your situation, the position in which you are put in. You are now the center of everything for all of these people surrounding you. You are now nothing, for who you normally are does not matter anymore.

A lot of my friends have backslid–understandably–into despairposting and doomreblogging about this, so I want to give you something a bit different: the UK does not like these rioting racist twats and is prepared to say so loudly and with force.

please don’t reblog posts that are “EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE” unless they contain some way for the people reading them to take action–whether it’s gofundmes, or letter templates for MPs, petition links, etc. “LOOK AT THE BAD THING” is for the newspapers. we are not the newspapers, we are the people trying to fix the fucking mess they’ve made.

A book entitled Song of the Stag lifted up in front of a fountain with Edinburgh Castle behind itALTA book entitled Song of the Stag held up in front of some pink rosesALT

Kenzie was late. Cait perched on a fountain in the New
Town’s rose garden and a breeze sprayed cool mist across
her skin. Again, and again, she counted the Bodles scattered
across the fountain’s tiled floor. They reminded her of the
coins in the homeless man’s hat that morning. She wondered
where he would go when night came. She wondered where
the Fox had slunk aw
ay to.

There she was again. It seemed the Fox had disappeared
from her plinth and taken to hiding in Cait’s mind. Cait
groaned as she tossed a pebble into the water, and the sound
of approaching voices broke the surface of her thoughts.
When she turned, she found Kenzie and Innes walking
towards her. Innes was laughing, and relief sputtered inside
Cait. They seemed in good sp
irits.

The rose garden in Thorterknock is inspired by Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh! The Ross Fountain (pictured) is topped by the figures of four women representing science, arts, poetry and industry, which are all fields I wanted Storran to excel in (just as Scotland does).

My debut fantasy novel inspired by Scottish folklore and autonomy is out now! You can get a hold of Song of the Stag from Ringwood Publishing, Amazon, and Waterstones website 🦌✨

everything has political content. sorry. theres some guys who get really really angy when you say this but its true

oh was it made? by a person who lives within a social system? using time and/or money? oh then its production has a political economy. hope this helps

Every time I see one of these posts I can’t help but think of someone watching some show made for literal babies or toddlers with a notepad trying to find all the political messages.

very funny to say the sentence ‘show made for literal babies or toddlers’ and not realize that there are many deeply political aspects to the fact that’s a category you can delineate in the first place!
