Six Sentence Sunday – Rough Diamond, the release edition! #sixsunday

After a bit of a break, I’m back with Six Sentence Sunday , and am super excited because ROUGH DIAMOND is now available!

In honour of this awesomeness, here’s six sentences from ROUGH DIAMOND. Thanks, as always, to the peeps behind this wonderful initiative, and to all the lovely people who comment on my sentences :D

The man who wanted to buy her saloon occupied a table all to himself, watching the roulette wheel as he toyed with the whiskey before him. Though the table regularly sat four, none had joined him, and it looked as if none would. He seemed to suffer no injury from their disinterest, merely continuing to observe the roulette wheel, the lamp set upon his table lighting a foolish grin on his face.

Leaning on the balcony’s wooden balustrade, Alice watched him. For over half an hour, Llewellyn had sat at his table and played with his whiskey, raising it to his lips every so often but not drinking a drop. Instead, his avid gaze took in the activity surrounding him, and his eyes sharpened every now and then as if he were noting something in that empty head of his.

Rough Diamond by Cassandra Dean Western Escape Decadent Publishing

Owner of the Diamond Saloon and Theater, Alice Reynolds is astounded when a fancy Englishman offers to buy her saloon. She won’t be selling her saloon to anyone, let alone a man with a pretty, empty-headed grin…but then, she reckons that grin just might be a lie, and a man of intelligence and cunning resides beneath.

Rupert Llewellyn has another purpose for offering to buy the pretty widow’s saloon—the coal buried deep in land she owns. However, he never banked on her knowing eyes making him weak at the knees, or how his deception would burn upon his soul.

Each determined to outwit the other, they tantalize and tease until passion explodes. But can their desire bridge the lies told and trust broken?

Welcome Karyn Gerrard to the blog! #guest #author

Peeps, please join me in welcoming Karyn Gerrard to the blog. Karyn has a brand new book out, MY VAMPIRE COVER MODEL, and she’s here to tell us all about it. So settle in with a large, possibly alcoholic beverage and enjoy, peeps.

My Vampire Cover Model by Karyn Gerrard Decadent Publishing

Cassandra Dean: Congratulations on the release of MY VAMPIRE COVER MODEL! Would you tell us a little about it?

Karyn Gerrard: Sure! It’s a novella, a paranormal/contemporary/erotic romance. Here is the blurb:

Life changed for Deanna Brooks the night she attended a book signing for her aunt’s best-selling paranormal romance series. There she met Burney ‘The Cover God’ Sheridan. The model for the series’ fictional vampire hero, Burn is beyond handsome and has an overabundance of Irish charm. He’s too good to be true.

Burn Sheridan, a man with scores of past lives, has a secret: he is a vampire. Meeting Deanna is agony because for the first time in over two hundred years, Burn experiences the rarest of vampiric needs—the mate-of-the-soul connection. Keeping people at a distance has been Burn’s existence for centuries, but Deanna makes his pledge of staying detached impossible.

Many obstacles lie ahead and the biggest of all may be Burn himself. Can Deanna and Burn overcome them and find lasting love?

CD: What inspired you to write MY VAMPIRE COVER MODEL?

KG: I noticed all the pictures being posted on Facebook of hot cover model Paul Marron on a tour with New York Times Best selling paranormal author, Kresley Cole. They were plugging the Book ‘Lothaire’ of which Paul is on the cover. My mind began to plot. What if the cover model in question really was—a vampire? It was amazing how it all clicked into place. I had it written in no time! Pure fantasy, but lots of fun to write. And Cover Models are the best inspiration! (see pic of Paul Marron to the right *sigh*)

CD: What do you find easiest/most difficult about writing paranormal romance?

The easiest is the heroes, I love delving into their tortured pasts. All my paranormal heroes have them. I enjoy that aspect more than the gory side of Paranormal. I also enjoy creating my own paranormal world and mythology. That is half the fun for me.

The most difficult is trying to remember all the aspects of the world I created! Also, I am not really much of a romance suspense reader or writer, so trying to layer in suspenseful plot points into a paranormal is very challenging for me.

CD: You’ve written books that are paranormal romance and straight contemporaries. Why have you chosen to write in these genres?

KG: I like to write in genres I like to read myself. I also have a couple of historical releases coming up. I find mixing it up keeps the writing fresh to me and keeps the ‘fun factor’ alive. I always said, once this stops being fun to me, I will no longer do it.

CD: Do you have plans to write a book in any other another genres?

KG: Yes! I have a Historical coming out in November with Silver Publishing, KNIGHT OF CHRISTMAS, and my free read with Evernight Pub THE RIDING CROP is a historical. Also have a short story for Decadent’s The Edge Line that is a historical coming sometime in December, THE BLIND CUPID. Am working on a historical erotic romance that is a prequel of sorts to THE BLIND CUPID! Also have a completed historical western to edit.

Looks like I will be sticking pretty much with Contemps, Paranormal and Historicals for now.  However, another upcoming release, THE HERO SANDWICH with Breathless Press (Nov 9) co-written with my bud and crit partner, Gayl Taylor, has F/M/F ménage and cougar themes, a first for me! Also I stuck my toe in the BDSM waters with THE RIDING CROP and THE BLIND CUPID. Though both are light BDSM, it certainly is something I may explore in a longer narrative down the road.

CD: What is your writing process?

KG: Good question! Not sure I have one. I put on a full pot of Earl Grey tea, my comfy-slouchy clothes, usually music is playing in the background. From movie soundtracks, classical, current hard rock to 60′s-80′s. I find music a great accompaniment to writing. Doesn’t distract me at all. I am a pantser, I have a vague idea for plot and ending in mind and just sit down and type and see where the characters take me.

CD: What do you believe to be the most important factor in portraying a believable romantic relationship?

KG: Emotion. A deep connection that goes beyond the physical, but sizzles with heat as well. A couple of reviewers have called my stories ‘hot and sweet’, like a cup of hot chocolate. I think it fits.

Everyone has their own opinion what is erotic or erotica, I put myself in the ‘Erotic Romance’ category. I’m all about the emotion. Hot sex spices things up, but it is not the main thrust (no pun intended!) of my books. Also believable situations and conversations between the hero and heroine.

We remember the thrill of falling in love, the intense feelings and the off-the-chart physical yearnings. We as readers and writers for that matter can relive it through a romance novel.

Romance encompasses the ups and downs of obtaining that one true love. We are swept away into the adventure, larger than life heroes (and okay, heroines), drama and always that happily ever after.

CD: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

KG: Be true to yourself, your family and friends and you can never go wrong.

CD: What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received?

KG: Never give up. Keep writing. Write what you love. Get the story down first, then go back and edit. Don’t take any rejection personally (easy to say, I know) Jump back in the trenches.

CD: Who is your greatest writing influence?

KG: I would have to say every romance author I have ever read. Everyone influences me. Though I will pick one. The first romance novel I read was Simply Magic from Mary Balogh. The book still impacts me to this day. If I can ever reach even half of the emotion in anything I write as Mary has in this book, I will be a happy camper.

CD: What do you enjoy reading?

KG: A voracious reader, I only started reading romance about six years ago and started writing it at least three years ago. Imagine my shock at having a life-long dream come true. Being published. Goes to show it’s never too late to pursue your dreams.

Besides romance, also enjoy non-fiction, and certain biographies. I have just purchased some Michael Connelly books at a second hand book store, so I am going to give suspense a whirl.

CD: What’s your favourite television show? Favourite movie?

KG: Oh wow, I have so many and my lists change constantly. I will name a few. Love classic movies, so Casablanca is up there. Love Goodfellas and The Godfather, too.

For TV, love Justified and am watching BBC’s Sherlock at the moment and loving it. Also Game of Thrones.

CD: You have a book review site, The Romanorum. Would you tell us a little about this?

KG: I started out as a reviewer, also reviewed for The Season before I was published. Now that I am published, sadly, my review time has been slashed considerably. Also don’t seem to have the time to visit the blogs I used to! I am writing shorter reviews (also putting them at Goodreads) and am going to use The Romanorum (Latin for The Romance) to showcase authors and books more.

My opinion on reviews is I don’t post anything under 2 stars. (out of 5) I’m not going to savage a book, there is enough nastiness in the world. I held that opinion before I was published, but now that I am, I feel even more strongly about it. A writer pours their heart and soul and sweat into a book, I’m not going to publicly shred it. I think a little respect goes a long way.

CD: If you were stranded in a land that looked suspiciously like the cover of a paranormal romance series, what three things would you wish were with you?

KG: Oh Lord, this question stumped me big time. I guess I would want kick-ass, knee-high heroine boots. Sexy under things for my tryst with shirtless, hunky paranormal hero on the cover. For some reason, I would want a whip. Not sure why…*snort*

CD: Where can readers find you?

KG: Here – SITE ~ FACEBOOK ~ TWITTER ~ GOODREADS

~Excerpt~

Deanna tapped her sandaled foot in annoyance. She didn’t want to bother with the guy, but Janice insisted, bouncing on the balls of her feet in excitement as they advanced toward the table.

As they moved closer, the model’s masculinity became more potent. She could hear the slight lilt to his deep voice as he answered the ladies questions. His eyes crinkled sexily when he smiled. His teeth were perfectly shaped and a brilliant white.

Deanna glanced at her aunt’s table a few times, hoping to catch her eye, but Carol was busy working her crowd. While Deanna enjoyed an historical romance she’d never quite taken to the paranormal genre. Aunt Carol always mailed her advance copies, but she usually wound up giving them to Janice. She should’ve given the books a chance. Judging from the crowd, paranormal romance seemed popular. There was a steady stream of women coming and going.

Janice clutched her arm. “We’re next!”

Oh, yippie-friggin’-yay. Janice stood next to Burn. Damn, he is tall. A few inches under six-six, anyway, Deanna observed. Janice babbled nonsensical chatter while the model smiled, nodded, and signed a couple of her paperbacks.

Janice put her arm around the man’s trim waist. “Take our picture, Dean!”

Deanna raised the camera and looked up just as Burn’s searing gaze swept over her like a roll of white heat. God, his eyes had turned from black to silver again. Those special magic contacts were amazing. Holding out the camera, she clicked and hoped Janice was in the frame because she couldn’t tear her eyes away from “Sizzle” or “Burn” or whatever his name was. Deanna clicked another for good measure.

Janice took the camera and shoved her toward the leather-clad hunk. Her mouth went dry, and her insides fluttered. For God’s sake, he was only a model. Why was she so flustered?

She stepped next to him and glanced up. Oh hell yeah, very tall. He towered over her by at least a foot. His arm stretched out to clasp her shoulder, and he brought her in tight against his side. Solid, rock-hard muscle. Her insides began to churn in arousal.

“What’s your name, darlin’?”

She couldn’t speak. Deanna was like Ralphie in A Christmas Story, sitting on Santa’s lap. Duh…uh. No words came out.

“Her name is Deanna, but I call her Dean!” Janice sang out.

Burn gently squeezed her shoulder, and it almost brought her to her knees, his touch was so intoxicating.

“Dean. I like that,” he purred.

Dear God. His voice, was he Irish? The tone sounded low, sexy, and rumbled deep in his impressive chest, sending shock waves through her entire body.

Then the unthinkable happened. A wash of scent covered her. Deanna could taste it in her mouth, and feel it on her skin. Was the overpowering aroma his cologne? Some guys liked to drown themselves with those tacky body sprays. Burn must have marinated himself in the swill.

Deanna wheezed and her throat closed up. Her hand clasped her throat. Trying to breathe through her nose was unsuccessful. The only thing she smelled was his spicy, musky, overpowering scent. Her eyes watered and her body trembled furiously.

“Are you all right, love?”

Deanna fell to her knees, fighting for every breath. Strong arms encircled her and carried her from the sales floor through to a door marked Staff Only.

Naughty or Nice Giveaway Hop! #giveaway

The Naughty or Nice Giveaway Hop is hosted by Reading Romances. Let the celebrations begin!

Hey peeps!

Welcome to the Naughty or Nice Blog Hop! Big thanks go to Nat of Reading Romances for hosting.

What a great topic! Naughty or nice, I do love a bit of the romance. Both hold appeal, but lets look at them in detail, shall we?

I’m reading The Seduction of Phaeton Black by Jillian Stone at the moment, and I’d definitely class that as naughty! Phaeton is a deliciously naughty character, bestowing his, ahem, favours wherever he pleases to the delight of the ladies. It will take one very special woman to hold his attention – and it seems he’s met her in Miss America Jones.

A nice romance – an absolutely lovely one, in fact – is Goddess of the Hunt by Tessa Dare. The story is romantic and lovely and just makes you feel good. I love a bit of nice with my romance sometimes. As we all know, I’m a big fan of Dark! Tortured! romances, but a really well done sweet and lovely romance is quite wonderful, and Tessa Dare has the stuff ;p

With my own books, I’d say ROUGH DIAMOND is pretty naughty! The hero, Rupert, delights in being a bit mischievous, and his act of the empty-headed buffoon bedevils the heroine, Alice, to no end. Heh.

Rought Diamond by Cassandra Dean

As for nice… well, TEACH ME is nice and naughty! Heh. Three years a widow, Elizabeth determines to learn all of erotic pleasure, and the Earl of Malvern is engaged as her tutor. Naughty times ensue.

‘By Moon and Sea’, my contribution to Smut by the Sea, is a naughty tale as well, a short story about a wife waiting for her husband on a balcony by the sea. When he comes home, naughty times ensue.

And now, the contest#!

What do you guys think is a naughty romance? A nice one? What are your favourite romantic tales? Let me know!

The rise of the Western

I posted on Facebook the other day about the prevalence of Western-themed* books, movies and TV shows at the moment. Hang on, I’ll get the post for you…

You know, there seems to be a bit of interest in Westerns recently. Maybe it’s a reaction to the rapid change in technology…nostalgia and analogue are playing a huge part in what people surround themselves with in their home life. Maybe the romance and, yes, nostalgia of the western is the reason?

Or maybe it’s because I’ve written a western and I have glasses of the rose coloured kind.

- my post on Facebook

So I’ve been thinking about this a bit. I listen to the rather fabulous Common Knowledge podcast over at Radio National, and they were the first to bring this to my attention.

As our lives become more dominated by technology, we seem to be clinging to the ‘retro’. I know I LOVE film cameras, and if I see anything that reminds me of my childhood in an op shop (including curtains with patterns of orange and brown entwined together – gotta love that combo!), it must come home with me immediately.

However, it seems more and more people are furnishing their homes with all things past. Video cassettes, record players, type writers…These things are popping up in people’s lives and homes. It’s been suggested that this may be a reaction to the technology-dominated work space, the almost-paperless office that has risen to prominence in the past twenty or so years. Computers, tablets, smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, Google…all these things are so very new, but they have dominated our lives so very quickly.

Recently, I heard a statistic that the top ten paying jobs in the world didn’t exist in 2004. That’s eight years ago, peeps. Is it any wonder we’re reacting with a craving for a ‘simpler’ time? It’s gotten so when you go out to dinner with friends, at least three quarters of us will be checking our Facebook or email on our Smartphones, interacting with our cyber friends over the flesh-and-blood people before us.

Perhaps that part of the appeal of this romantic notion of the past, the time before technology made it so you could connect to the internet anywhere at any time. I know I get stressed thinking that I must update to my blog, Facebook, Instagram…I’m out enjoying the Adelaide Show, shouldn’t I be tweeting this? It’s gotten so when sometimes when I forget my phone at home (ha! Rhymes!), I breath a sigh of relief. Thank God. Now I CAN’T check the internet.

And now, think Remember in the mid-90s, when I couldn’t do any of that? When mobile phones were in their infancy, and were pretty much used only as phones? Wasn’t that just the bestest time eva?

So, lets apply this notion to the Old West, that era when everything was so new and exciting and treacherous – kinda like now. Is the return to the era in stories that it appeals to that ideal of the simple life, where everything had to be done with your hands? You had to build your house, you had to make your fun, you hung out with your community at the church, or the saloon, or the bakery.

As we grow more insular, as the need for shopping and food and banking and whatever else are met by the little box with a screen and keyboard sitting on our desk, will the romance and appeal of the communities of years gone by, of the need to interact with people to buy your groceries or watch entertainment, grow?

Back in the day, it was space travel and adventure that brought about the demise of the Western. Could it be that the sudden, meteoric changes in technology will bring the Western back?

I’d love to know your thoughts, peeps.

Cassandra

xx

*By Western, I mean the Old West – Spaghetti Westerns, Deadwood and an era gone by.

Welcome to the blog Kylie from Octavia and Vicky!

Hi peeps,

Please join me today in welcoming Kylie from Octavia and Vicky to the blog! Kylie is a dear friend of mine, and has the most delightful blog about Early Childhood Learning, Technology and…Well, I’ll let her explain, shall I? :D

Cassandra Dean: Would you tell us a bit about yourself and your blog?

OctaviaandVicky.comKylie: Hello! I’m Kylie, a mother to two year old ‘Pebble’, with another bub on the way. I’m also an early childhood educator who loves playing, cooking and using as many geek-tech tools as possible along the way.

CD: Why the name Octavia and Vicky?

K: Octavia and Vicky is named after a story I wrote when I was five years old. It is about a spider named Octavia and her young friend, Vicky.

CD: What made you decide to take up blogging?

K: I’ve dabbled with blogging for years, way back in the days of Geocities! I had a health and life style blog, a personal “everything and anything” blog and then a pregnancy/baby blog. I just love techy stuff and I have always loved writing. Blogging was a natural choice for me.

CD: What is the philosophy behind your blog?

K: I share quick, easy and fun ideas for families to play, make, do, cook and eat. I write about things that I enjoy and find useful, and hope that others find it useful too.

CD: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

K: Do the best you can with what you’ve got at the time, and, Keep it simple, stupid (I’m not always good at following that advice!)

CD: What’s the best piece of blogging advice you’ve ever received?

K: Stay true to your voice and be consistent.

CD: Who is your greatest blogging influence?

K: I am finding it so hard to keep on top of reading blogs, I just skim the surface of the big blogging pond and try and see it all. I have hundreds of blogs in my RSS feed and they each hold a special place in my heart. I was so lucky to meet many of my blogging idols and friends at a conference in Sydney this year, which really added to the connections made through blogging. And yes, I am totally fence sitting and not picking any favs.

CD: What do you enjoy reading (besides my books, of course ;p)?

K: I’m definitely spending a lot more time reading social media than books. Does that count? When I do read a book it might be anything from a thriller, mystery, romance, drama, comedy. It’s the writing that I enjoy more than the genre.

CD: What’s your favourite television show? Favourite movie?

K: You are asking very hard questions, young lady! My favourite TV just recently has been Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey. My strongest television influence is YOU, as you point me in the direction of all the best stuff to watch. (CD: It’s my pleasure, Kylie! It’s so nice to have someone to share my obsessions with… :D ) My favourite movie… that is very tricky. I’ll just say The Princess Bride because it’s the first thing that came to mind… but I have many, many favourites.

CD: If you were stranded where the wild things are, or perhaps where the dish ran to with with the spoon, what three things would you like to have with you?

K: My camera (my phone would be great too – along with free wifi!). Pen and paper. A picnic lunch to share with the cat, the cow and the little dog.

CD: Where can readers find you?

K: octaviaandvicky.com

Thanks so much for visiting, Kylie! Peeps, check out her blog – you won’t regret it :D

Welcome Emily Cale to the blog!

Please join me in welcoming Emily Cale to the blog! Emily has a great new release, POWER PLAY, and she’s chatting about it for us all. Check it out below!

What would you wish for?

Power Play by Emily Cale (Decadent Publishing)

Thanks so much to Cassandra for agreeing to have me on her blog today to talk about my newest release, POWER PLAY.

When Decadent Publishing first started their 1 Night Stand series, I never imagined it would gain the fan base that it currently has. I should’ve though. It truly is a magical idea and I tip my hat to the creators constantly. If you haven’t read one of the 1NS books, I’ll tell you why you should.

Imagine that you are having rotten luck in your love life. Or maybe it has simply grown stale and you don’t know how to fix it. Perhaps you are ready to settle down and spend the rest of your life with your own personal hero, but he’s nowhere to be found. That is where Madame Eve and the 1NS service come in. The characters are often hesitant and disbelievers when they start. How can a woman who they’ve never met, have the ability to pick out someone who is perfect for them?

In some cases, like in POWER PLAY, it is the best friend who sets up the initial date. Natalie is set up by her best friend who used the service in the first Hat Trick Trilogy Book (GOALIE INTERFERENCE). She wants something more than the average night in a hotel room. She imagines this as the opportunity to make all her dreams come true. So she makes a call and changes the “order” for the evening. Instead of one hunky man, she’ll take two.

GIVEAWAY*: One random commenter will win a USD$5 Amazon.com gift card. Just tell me what you’d “order” if you could have one night. It doesn’t have to be about sex. It could be a vacation with your current partner or anything you want.

Power Play by Emily Cale (Decadent Publishing)

POWER PLAY

(Hat Trick Trilogy Book 2)

Natalie Fritz didn’t need a night of sexual adventure as payment for setting her friend up, but she wouldn’t turn it down either. Determined to make sure she gets exactly what she wants, she contacts Madame Eve and requests not one, but two dates for the evening. What she doesn’t expect is for those men to be players on her friend’s hockey team.

Ian and Todd find that sharing women provides all parties with more pleasure. Finding someone who buys into their theory is a little harder. So they turn to Madame Eve’s 1 Night Stand service to locate a partner. When they meet Natalie, they discover a gorgeous woman who turns them on physically and intellectually.

Most relationships are meant to be between two people, but what happens when it takes three to make the night worthwhile? Can they take a leap of faith or will their time be limited to one night?

Available from Decadent Publishing or Amazon.com

Emily Cale is an author of erotic romance and erotica. You can stalk her on her website, Twitter, or Facebook.
