Fresh Hope

Welcome to Sunday Blog Share. Today, we’re looking at Lost Soul Barren Holiday 1. This is the first novella in a limited series focusing on what’s talked about very little whenever special occasions arise. Not every holiday is filled with happiness and cheer. There are often dark secrets tugging at all of us, things we hide from the world, and those issues can bubble up during a holiday when people are supposed to be happy and celebrating.
Get Lost Soul Barren Holiday 1 on Amazon!

Cody lives a horror no child should, in a physically abusive home. He made a promise to his dying dad that he would do his best to stay with his mom, until circumstances cause him to snap. Brandy has always wanted to get to know her next door neighbor better, but he’s pretty shy. She’s witnessed things that don’t seem right, but in the late sixties, parents were allowed to discipline their children without the fear of interference.

Blurb
A holiday they will never forget.
The neighborhood knew what Cody Allen Luther endured on a daily basis for five long years. Everyone except Brandy Mason turned their heads. After all, it was a parent’s right to discipline their child. On Christmas Eve, 1969, Cody finally can’t take the brutal abuse any longer, but not for himself—his mother turns her unreasonable anger on his younger stepsiblings and he makes a life changing decision, killing her instead of allowing her to keep hurting his family.
Only one person has ever understood the why Cody reacted as he did that Christmas Eve of 1969. Brandy Mason will do anything to protect Cody, even stand up against classmates willing to petition the governor to have Cody tried as an adult for murder once he is released from juvenile detention.

Excerpt
Ten year old Cody Luther walked alongside his dad. They had a very important job to do today, finding the perfect Christmas tree. Cody didn’t really understand what was going on, just that his daddy had been real sick lately. It had something to do with his service in the Marine Corps during the Korean War.
“It’s going to be tough on you, son.” Dad stopped near a Douglas fir and examined the branches. “I know this isn’t what you want, but the courts said you had to do this if I… I…” He wiped away a tear from beneath an eye. “If I’m not alive anymore.”
“You’ll get better, Dad,” Cody said. “I know you will. Those doctors will make you better.”

How Trollish

Good morning. Welcome to wwwblogs. Today, we’re going to be talking about internet trolls and how we respond to them. Oh boy, isn’t that a job!
The internet allows people to post on a variety of subjects and interact with others in civilized conversations, most of the time. Authors particularly love social media because it offers them the opportunity to get their books out to a worldwide audience, but there are dangers in surfing the net and opening yourself to others.
Meet the trolls. These are people who lurk in the social media background. They are looking for an unsuspecting person, someone they can attack and run. Unless, of course, you respond to their post with an argument. Then, it’s game on and you, the author, are about to lose in a big way.
What are internet trolls? They are individuals who seek out what they see as weaknesses. Say you’re promoting your latest release. You’ve carefully set up the posts to intrigue new readers, interest them enough so they’re going to buy your book. While working on this, you happen to notice a notification from Facebook or Twitter that someone has responded to it. You don’t recognize the name, but you are on the hunt for new readers, so you open the post and are met with…
What a dumb idea. So what? Some dummy got in trouble. Big deal? That’s not a good idea for a book.
Right about now, you’re seeing red. All you want to is block this individual. That might work, or the troll more than likely has many accounts under different names, and they will return with an even nastier post. You could respond, if you enjoy arguing most of the day with a person who is determined to prove to the rest of the world that you are a loser. Or you can just ignore the troll. They might post a few more times but without feedback from you, they’re off soon to bother someone else, who will feed their desire to prove they’re right.
I’ve had my share of trolls. Usually, I never reply to them. One last month had me smiling. They were complaining the cover art for a book that’s been out for five years had the Photoshop lines showing. Of course, I enlarged the cover and searched it carefully. I happen to know the artist very well and knew she hadn’t left any Photoshop lines in it, but… well, tis better to check than not. Anyway, I did respond to this troll, saying thank you and I’d check it out, but never mentioning they were the first person in five years who had seen this, including quite a few blogger/reviewers who thought the cover was amazing. Those people have very sharp eyes when it comes to cover art and would have alerted me immediately if they saw anything wrong. Luckily, I must have appeased that troll, for they vanished into the mists of the internet.
On the same day, I got a troll who used all 280 characters on Twitter to rant about how the book I was promoting was dumb, foolish, and there were people who were in far worse straights and why couldn’t I write about them. Oh, the temptation. I really wanted to respond, but the bitterness of this message told me that would only bring about more ranting, so I moved on. Troll vanished by the next day.
Just remember, internet trolls only have one purpose… to engage someone and trash them for their hard work. So, Don’t Feed The Trolls!

Overcoming Loss

Good morning. Welcome to Tuesday Book Blogs. Today, we’re talking about overcoming loss.

In At Home Christmas, Cat has a lot of issues that she manages to handle without anyone realizing how truly lonely she is. A chance meeting on a temporary duty base changes everything for her and she soon finds herself wondering if she can possibly entertain a long term, in addition to a long distance, relationship.

Get At Home Christmas on Amazon!
Unfortunately, that is not to be and she’s left grieving for a relationship she feels brought her closer to this guy along with wondering if she truly knew him. Her loss becomes the reader’s, as they can relate to her reaction of wanting to curl up and waste away.
We’ve all suffered losses in our lifetime. They are a given that we will have breakups, deaths, even a simple move to another state or country can change our lives significantly. It’s how we handle those losses that define us as people.

Some will dive into a new relationship without realizing they’re not ready for one. Others will wall up their emotional heart and shut everyone out of their lives, so they don’t hurt like that again. Then there are those who can move onward at a certain point, who will find there is someone in the world they can share their deepest secrets with, and trust with their emotions.

False Accusation

Welcome to Sunday Blog Share. Today, we’re talking about Thunder & Lightning, a new young adult novel that explores the horror of false accusations.

Taren and Tarit are twins. He lives up to his nickname of Lightning as a running back for the Georgia Bulldogs. She has a fearsome temper, leading people to think of her as Thunder. Their unusual names translate to those nicknames, and a spoiled girl is about to discover how much trouble these twins can be if they are fighting for what is right.
Blurb
The gridiron rivalry between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Auburn Tigers runs deep. Auburn has a knack of ruining Georgia’s perfect season at the worst possible moment…
The same can be said about Tarit ‘Lightning’ Berenson and his twin, Taren ‘Thunder’ Berenson. Tarit’s a running back for the Dawgs; his speed is legendary. Taren prefers online gaming; her skills are awesome.
Brad Weaver seeks justice for those falsely accused. He’s attempting to make up for his brother’s false arrest and subsequent “suicide” that evidence points to being a murder. Yet, evidence is hard to come by and he’s soon running at full speed to rescue Tarit from the same fate.
It all begins at a game, a win and revenge against a tough rival for University of Georgia Bulldogs.
“Dawgs, this is for you!”
Tarit’s words set up a mighty cheer on the night of the SEC Championship football game. His rejection of a girl’s advances at a party later that night turns the last half of his senior year of college into a nightmare without end.
Taren does her best to help her twin despite a lack of support from everyone, even their own parents. Her allegiance to him never wavers, nor does she stop searching for answers no matter what she has to do, even when it appears he might actually be guilty.
Time is running out…
Evidence mounts against him…
Until Taren makes a startling discovery…
Is it too late to save Tarit?

Excerpt
“We’re in the last quarter of the SEC final game of this season.” The announcer’s voice is barely audible over the roar of the crowd. “Tarit ‘Lightning’ Berenson prepares to receive the ball. South Carolina Gamecock’s are all over this talented running back, ready to stop him. But nothing has stopped Tarit all season. Will tonight be when ‘Lightning’ learns he’s not invincible?”
The voices echo in my head, reminding me that was a night that should have been my greatest triumph. The memory is the only thing I have left of what was once a stellar college career. Since the after game party, when I turned down her advances and walked away alone, I’ve had to justify my every action. Juliana Mullins has been treated like a queen, given all kinds of sympathy and brought horror to my family.

Misused Words

Good morning. Welcome to wwwblogs. Today, we’re talking about misused words, otherwise known as homophones. I’ve talked extensively on this subject in this blog, but recently I ran across some words that are being misused; words I’d never seen misused in the past.
Imagine my surprise when I opened a submission, as part of my job as an editor in chief, and saw (in the first sentence yet!) that the author had his main character applying the breaks.
Groan. I did not just see that. Please tell me that an educated person, whose books usually need little to no editing didn’t make that newbie mistake. So, I closed my eyes, rubbed them a little, and peeked again.
Uh, yup. That word break was still in the spot where brake should have been. Big as day, and screaming at me to tell the author to please double check the meanings of certain words. That wasn’t the only author to make an oopsie with homophones that day. Two other authors made equally embarrassing mistakes with homophones. One using heel in a sentence where the individual was heeled of their injuries. The other one was just as bad, where a man steels an object.
Let’s break these three new problematic homophones down, to the questions you should ask when using them.
Break: the item is unusable as it is designed to be used. Example: My pencil broke in the middle of a math test. Don’t break the window by throwing a ball at it.
Brake: a device that is used to stop a vehicle. Example: I slammed on the brakes. My left front brake needs replacing.
Heel: a part of the foot. Example: She slammed her heel against the wall behind her. His heel ached from having his socks bunched under it.
Heal: means to recover from an illness or injury. Example: After months of treatment, she was finally healed with a simple solution of avoiding certain foods. His finger showed no signs of healing after he cut it deeply.
Steel: a strong metal. The steel industry nearly collapsed many years ago. We need steel beams to support this building.
Steal: to take an item that belongs to someone else. Example: Someone stole my bike. The criminals entered the building with the intent of stealing all the cash.
One of the things we as authors must do is ensure that we aren’t using the wrong word. That is why it’s so important to have another set of eyes look at our work, to pick out problems like this.

Local Traditions

Good morning. Welcome to Tuesday Book Blogs. Today, we’re going to be talking about embracing local holiday traditions if you’re in another country.
Many military members are sent to overseas posts. Some are dangerous, where these people are in war zone and don’t have to worry about observing local traditions. For others, they are in an assignment where they are very much a part of the community. That is when they need to study and be a part of those traditions.

Get A Long Way From Home on Amazon
During my time in the Air Force, I was extremely lucky to spend a great deal of time in Germany. I’d always wanted to see and explore this country, since I am part German on my father’s side. This was an opportunity of a lifetime and I had a lot of plans for my free time.
One of the things I enjoyed the most were the Volksmarches. We would walk a certain number of kilometers—ten, twenty, or forty—at either a leisurely pace or pushing ourselves to the limit. Even pregnant, we could enjoy these walks, stay in shape, and get to know the local people.

Another tradition I enjoyed was St. Nicholas Day, in early December. Even the small villages had a St. Nicholas and a Krampus who visited each home with a child, to pass out treats or remind a naughty child that they were in trouble. The children and the adults all enjoyed this celebration, and loved including the military members in the activities.
As an author, I love to incorporate my military experiences, both good and bad, into my stories. They are very much a part of my life and I hope you enjoy learning about other cultures from them.

Medoricity or Shine

Good morning. Welcome to Monday Blogs. Today, we’re going to be talking about how you as an author can stand out from the crowd.
You’ve had your first book accepted by a publisher, or you’ve decided to self-publish and just had your work approved on the sales venues. Congratulations! You are now a published author. Now, are you ready for the next step?
Far too many authors today think all they have to do is write a book and the reading public will flock to read it. That can’t be further from the truth. Once your book is available for purchase, your job has just begun.
The first thing you should understand is that the day your book was published on the sales venues, so were several thousand other books. There is a very good chance you are now competing against hundreds if not thousands of other authors, both experienced and new, in getting those all-important sales. Believe me, you are about to embark on a part of being an author you never thought existed.
If you haven’t already studied the many different promotional venues, now is the moment when you need to take a crash course. Be very wary. There are many that charge you money to participate and they aren’t cheap. So, if like most authors, you are a bit tight on funds, you should start with social media: Facebook, Twitter, and Google + are the giants in this arena. Since you have yet to get noticed on these venues, you will need to get your name known, with an occasional reference to your book.
“Bu… bu… but, I need to sell my book now.”
Well, since you’re reading this post, I can assume a couple of things about you. Either you are looking for a quicky way to getting the social media presence I’ve worked nearly ten years to achieve, or you are studying on how to promote your book once it’s published.
If you are in the second category, congratulations. You are preparing for what will take a good chunk of your writing day but is well worth the effort. If you are in the first category, you are going to have to work hard while writing your next book to catch up to everyone else.
First of all, you do need to be active on your Facebook fan page, Twitter, and Google +. Some people will say that’s not necessary, but they are still dreaming of the eighties, when authors were feted and given all sorts of assistance by their publishers. You won’t see that, unless your book goes nuts and everyone in the universe is reading it.
Another media site for authors that’s gaining momentum is Instagram. And there’s no limit on the number of hashtags you can use. Twitter limits you to three per tweet, which can keep you from getting interest from the right groups.
The biggest thing to remember about the shark infested waters of social media is to swim fast and long. Don’t miss a single day promoting. Oh, I know some people will advise you only to talk about your book once a week or so, but that’s not true. Because you are not only promoting your book on social media, you are branding yourself as an author, and having a strong presence is the only way to do this.
So, promote heavily, talk about your next book in general terms, and remember to have fun and smile all the time.

Commitment

Welcome to Sunday Blog Share. Today, we’ll be talking about An Angel Sang Tonight. This story was difficult to write. The premise was a short, not a novel or novella. For the first time in my career, I found it difficult to do what once came easily when writing short stories—create loveable and memorable characters with a minimum of words. Even admonishing myself to focus on the plot rather than character development didn’t work… until I discovered the true meaning behind this story

Get An Angel Sang Tonight on Amazon

An Angel Sang Tonight was more than a story about a man and a woman losing their faith close to the holidays. It was far more than her inability to sing a song she’d always done without thought. There were more issues at hand than a young man losing his mother during what’s alleged to be the happiest time of the year. This tale was about a couple discovering their deep feelings for each other, despite their diverse backgrounds. It was about others seeing their love as unimportant, nothing that would do either any good.
Blurb
Christmas was almost here.
Caryn O’Brien and Johnson Angel lost the music in their lives when circumstances tore them away from each other. Together, they were a talented team, but separate, all they had were empty spaces in their souls. It didn’t help that the gulf between them was being forced open even wider by the bigotry and anger that surrounded them.
They had no way of knowing that those very things, which drove them apart, would also bring them together.

Excerpt
Caryn O’Brien stood in front of the choir, at the front of her church. On Christmas Eve she would celebrate her twenty-third birthday the same way she had done it since she was seven—by singing a solo of the one holiday song that meant so much to her.
She bowed her head forward, letting her copper colored hair conceal her face. It was better this way, so no one could see her excruciating pain. The source of said pain wasn’t visible. How does one show that their heart has shattered? How does a person get over the worst betrayal of their life? No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t bring her voice to the level of intensity required to make this song memorable.
I’ve loved Silent Night since the first time I heard it. Why can’t I sing it right now?

You Aren't Alone

Good morning. Welcome to wwwwblogs. Today we’re talking about the fact that as a twenty-first century author, you aren’t alone.
Seriously. Far too many self-published authors, and some with a publisher, feel like they are alone in the wilderness of today’s book world. They have no clue how to manage social media, where to seek out fairs and events where they can interest readers in their books, or even how to approach local business owners about having their postcards and business cards on display.
Oh, I see hands swaying in the air. Sure are a lot of people looking for expert advice on this subject. Here’s a huge secret—I am no expert. Like many other multi-published authors, I do a hit and miss, will this work type of promotion. Yes, I stick with the giants, because even though thousands if not millions of other authors are doing this, these sites are the place to see and be seen. Therefore, as an author in the twenty-first century, you are a fool to ignore them. This is the bread and butter of your daily promotion work. There are even sites like HootSuite and TweetDeck, where you can schedule your basic posts and dive in later in the day to share the others that have done you the favor of sharing your post.
The type of promotion I’m talking about today goes far beyond a quick post and hope it draws attention. I’m talking about walking into a store, noticing there are business cards on the counter, and saying, “Hey, mind if I leave some of my cards here?” I’m talking about setting up giveaways of either your e-books or paperbacks. I’m talking about discovering a book festival near where you live, or not so near if you plan on attending BEA (Book Expo of America). All of these require your presence and you need to bring your product with you. That means figuring out how many books to bring, do you need one of those open covers, to protect you and your books, and how will you deal with bathroom breaks, eating, and talking to all of those people.
Yes, gasp, you will have to interact with the public. Scary thought, right? Terrifying actually, but it’s all part and parcel of this job. It doesn’t matter how you feel at that moment. You can’t let these potential readers realize that you limped into the venue on gasoline fumes, or a flat tire, and have no clue how you’re going to get home. The potential buyers must never realize this is the first time you’ve done one of these events. You, the author on display, must smile—a big, teeth exposing, bright smile—and act as if you’re a millionaire who doesn’t need the money when in fact, you have to get groceries on the way home and you still haven’t figured out to fix that flat.
Oh, look, your first customer is arriving. Don’t panic. Smile. Smile. Welcome them to your spot. Smile. Smile. Talk about your book. Smile. Smile. And you just made a sale. See, that wasn’t so bad.

A new empty nester with her husband of more than twenty years, she spends her days figuring out new ways to torment her characters and coming up with innovative tales from the South and beyond.
She’s a multi-genre author who comes up with ideas from the strangest sources. Those who know her best will tell you that nothing is safe or sacred when she is observing real life. In fact, she considers any situation she witnesses as fair game when plotting a new story.
