Simple Salade Nioise

Here’s a lovely hot weather salad using tuna canned in oil (rather than grilling tuna steaks).

This salad uses tuna canned in oil to make it simple!

(Serves 4 -6)

8 to 12 tiny new potatoes, or 4 small red potatoes, halved

1 large head leafy lettuce, such as Boston or red leaf, well washed and drained (or ...

Guest Author: How My Experience as a Private Investigator Affects My Writing

I am so pleased to welcome author Pamela Beason, who’s agreed to share how the lessons learned as a PI show up in her writing! Pamela is a versatile and productive author and a great writers’ conference roommate! Be sure to look for her latest novel, Cascade . Here’s what Pamela has to say:

I worked as a private investigator for ten years in Washington State. Now that I have turned my attention to writing mysteries, ...

Writing Lessons from Greys Anatomy

I’ve become addicted…to a soap opera! Another writer (don’t know whether to curse or thank D.R. Ransdell!) got me hooked on Grey’s Anatomy, that long-lasting medical drama. She told me the scriptwriters know how to create suspense, and she was right. If you have difficulty getting your characters in deeper and deeper trouble, you might want to watch a few episodes. But careful–it’s addictive.

Pumpkin Tacos with Chorizo and Adobo

Pumpkin Tacos with Chorizo and Adobo
Pumpkin Tacos

I found this recipe in The Daily Meal, a great site for foodies. Peeling a cutting up a pie pumpkin isn’t easy, so allow extra time. I think these tacos taste nearly as good with butternut squash, something easy to find all year. ...

There’s Always Hope:

There’s so much news about the impact of climate change and global warming on our world and its ecosystems, much of it negative. In April, I joined a panel of writers of environmental mysteries–ecomysteries–at the Left Coast Crime 2022 mystery convention. Our books address serious issues, so much so that one audience member asked, “Is there any reason at all for hope?”

My answer? You bet! Humans have created the undo...

Wordslaying: How to Omit Unnecessary Words

Friends are generally surprised when I tell them I used to be a bird hunter. Using a .410 (small gauge) shotgun, I’d often limit out on doves before grown men using 12 gauge (larger pellets) shotguns. My parents were avid bird hunters. After they died, I gave up hunting. Now, especially recently, I’m a word…
