Halloween Monday Movie Marathon (And Beer)

Two things have converged to create what will be my finest blog moment:

1.I have Monday off from work.

2. I just got back from Rock and Shock.’

After the convention yesterday, I was struck hard by the desire to really get some Halloween celebrating in. I knew that I had to do something and something big in order to truly express my love for this holiday. And I also knew I had to do it fast. If I waited, the spirit could leave me and I would have done nothing and we would be well on our way to Th...

Rock and Shock 2013

I have to say that up until today, my Halloween spirit was lacking. I haven’t been watching scary movies. I haven’t been eating more than my usual share of fun sized Snickers bars. I haven’t been reveling in my usual Halloween activities. October has just been steadily and speedily been moving along and the whole damn month was about to slip on by without me doing a single thing about it.

Things had gone horribly awry somewhere.

But, today, something happened. something truly magical:

I went to...

Rock and Shock: Post Show Quickie

This was a great show this year. I laughed, I cried and I met Leatherface.

It was better than last year and last was already great. Vendors were friendly. Celebrities engaging. Everything made me glad to be a fan of horror.

Lengthier update later.

Rock and Shock 2013: The Day Before

This will be the second year in a row that I’m going to Rock and Shock (which is happening right now!). Last year was great; I met some people, I bought some things, and I saw a lot that celebrated horror movies, books and scary things in general. It was nice to be surrounded by a crowd of people who shared the same morbid interests that I do and especially nice to be around people who exceeded my enjoyment of the genre a little bit too much, giving me a chance to feel normal.

This year, I hav...

Tis the Season to be Jolly

I keep thinking that it’s almost time for Christmas. My holiday sickness knows no bounds.

The last three months of the year seem geared toward beating back the winter doldrums. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Eve all gang up to make sure that the final few months are not as depressing and grey as they really are.

It’s the time I most look forward to and I’m excited to get it started.

Halloween Horror Movies

We all have our ways of celebrating Halloween. If you’re still in elementary school, you put on a costume and beg strangers for candy. If you’re in college, you use Halloween as an excuse to get blitzed. If you’re my age, you sit at home and quietly contemplate opening an Ameritrade account before deciding that adulthood can wait another year and watching a scary movie instead.

Every year, I try and watch a few new horror movies, but there are a few that I must watch, that I need to watch or t...

Scenery

Yesterday we went outside of the city, something we rarely do and something we have not done in a long time. Sometimes, it’s hard to remember how beautiful New England can be, especially when it’s just starting to turn to Fall.

We drove down two lane roads that were closely hemmed in on both sides by trees that were just beginning to show tinges of reds and oranges. Light would filter down through the leaves and then we would turn a corner and the trees would fall away to show a pond with the...

Beer Review: Samuel Adams Fat Jack

It’s been a long while since I’ve done a beer reviewand, in all honesty, it’s probably been a long while since I’ve actually spent any time thinking about the stuff I’m pouring into my stomach. It’s time to slow down and think about what I’m drinking. And we’re going to start off with something season appropriate.

FatJack

As I’ve mentioned before, Sam Adams has a series of limited edition beers that they only release in their larger bottles. I’ve reviewed one or two in the past and they can range from...

NANOWRIMO: Part II

I am strongly considering participating in NANOWRIMO again.

Last year was rough and I ended up with something I firmly believe was unpublishable. It drove me crazy. I was frustrated for the entire month of November. It made me deeply and profoundly angry on a day-to-day basis.

But, on the positive side, I did end up with 50,000 words to show for it. It was, and still is, the longest thing I have ever written. One of my weaknesses as a writer is my inability to carry a story for longer than a fe...

Halloween Anti-Climax

With Halloween rapidly approaching and with my promise to not celebrate Halloween rapidly faltering, I am stating now, unequivocally, that I am not doing any crazy, wacky Halloween stuff for my blog.

No posting every day. No Thirty-One Days of horror. No five hundred horror movie reviews.

I refuse to burn myself out on this. I refuse to make myself hate a holiday I enjoy.

We’re keeping it simple: I will occasionally blog about Halloween and horror and that’s all I’m promising.
