Bloggin’

With my waning, most likely, undiagnosedbronchitis on the one hand and wedding plan on the other, I haven’t had much time for blogging. I’m not asking for forgiveness, since most of you are spambots and were not offended anyway, I’m just offering up an explanation why I haven’t been able to stick to my blog schedule at all.

In truth, blogging and writing have slid so far down the list of priorities that I’m having trouble seeing them. I feel like I’ve been phoning it in the last couple of mont...

The Magic in the World

Instead of writing my movie review, I’ve been sitting here watching episode after episode of Fool Us, a British show where various British magicians try and fool Penn and Teller with their magic tricks. It’s just forty-five minutes of magicians trying their hardest and I can’t stop watching it.

I have a fascination with magic shows that can best be explained by why I also love found film horror movies: I love the idea of trying to convince your audience that the world they live in is not all t...

A Shot of DayQuil, A Shot of NyQuil

For the last few days, I have been involved in hand-to-hand combat with a cold and, I’m ashamed to say it, but I’ve been losing. I’ll deliver a couple of combinations that will send it reeling back into the corner, ( “Dylan has just come back with a dose of DayQuil, a glass of orange juice and a hot shower and the challenger looks like he’s had it! This could all be over in Round 2!”) and then my cold will come back out of the corner and deliver a haymaker that would fell Marvelous Marvin. I...

Saturday Night Movie Review: Nazis at the Center of the Earth

As I mentioned last week, I’m going to start reviewing movies that I believe are perfect to watch while drinking beer and hanging out with friends. Or, if you’re me, drinking a warm bloody mary while you’re by yourself. They’re the movies that are so bad they’re funny, over-the-top violence and acting so wooden you could build a table out of it.

All the movies I review will be readily available online, either through Netflix Instant or Amazon Prime or one of the many other (legal) streaming si...

Starting Anew

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I’ve decided to start a new blog and it’s been a startling experience. In the last two days, I’ve written four entries. They didn’t require soul searching or deep thinking or effort to write.

And that hasn’t been the case here for a very long time. Often, I struggle to come up with ideas or concepts to write about. That’s a big reason why you get to sit through new features every other day.

But the new bog has a single focus and a single point of conversation...

Saturday Night Movie Review: Stake Land

I believe, fervently, that Saturday nights are made for watching bad movies, mainly because I’m a shut-in with the personal skills of a wounded bear who was already not too fond of people. But finding the right bad movie is difficult. You need to hit all the right notes of hilarious dialogue, wooden acting and over-the-top special effects. Sometimes you spend ten minutes flipping through the Netflix Instant selection of horror movies, think you’ve hit a winner (The Stuff) and then realize tha...

Branching Out

I’ve been toying with the idea of starting a new blog, in addition to this one.

There are a few reasons why I shouldn’t and not very many reasons why I should. In fact, to be truthful, I can’t think of a single reason of why I should except that I want to.

I’ve been futzing around with a new(ish) hobby for a couple of months now and I want to document it. I always want to document the things I do, but I don’t think this blog could take the burden of yet one more of my bursts of intense interest...

A Minor Tweak, Here and There

I need to change up how we do things around here. Nothing too big. I’m still planning to update the blog two or three times a week. I’m still going to talk about whatever happens to enter my head. It is time, however, to stop just updating the blog on Sunday. I’m not sure how it ended up happening that Sunday was the day that I doubled up on entries, but now it’s turned into a habit and one that I probably need to break sooner rather than later.

So starting next week, we’re changing the schedu...

A Tour of GrandTen Distilled

For whatever reason, most of my experiences around Boston have been centered around brewery tours. Or trying to find a decently priced sushirestaurantwith an atmosphere that we enjoy. But mostly brewery tours. If ever we’re at a loss for something to do on the weekend, there’s a pretty good chance will head on down to the Harpoon Brewery and see how many free samples we can consume in fifteen minutes.

Yesterday, we decided to continue the trend, but in a slightly different direction. A couple...

Just Down Downs Road

In spite of the fact that I do not believe in monsters, the supernatural or Lovecraftian horrors, I will still go out of my way to try and find them. I’ve gone to Boston Commons trying to find the numerous ghosts that are supposed to have been sighted there. I’ve journeyed down abandoned stairwells hidden away in the walls of the bookstore I worked at.

And now I’ve walked down the legendary Downs Road. There are a few blog entries already written on the subject and the road has worked itself i...
