No Silva for Portugal – why playing all out is the key to success…

I seem to have spent the last few weeks (at least in part) immersed in the world of sport, which got me thinking.

Sport draws many parallels with successful job search, but what lessons can be learned and what sporting principles can be applied to deliver maximum impact?

In today’s blog post, I discuss two sporting events I witnessed over the past 24 hours and apply lessons learned to the executive job market.

Anderson Silva vs. Daniel Cormier – UFC 200 (Ultimate Fighting Championship):

As a...

What executive jobseekers need to know about how employers recruit…

Following the publication of my second book, Super Secrets of Successful Executive Job Search, Ireceive regular messages from people who’ve read it.

If you’ve seenany of my previous blog posts, you’ll know that feedback is something I actively encourage, as in my opinion it’s the best way to learn. Nothing brightens my day more than receiving a personal message through LinkedIn or my website.

One of the maintopics people mention when they get in touch and one of the biggest revelations for th...

Our most valuable asset and 5 lessons for life!

In this week’s blog I’m going off-piste a little. It’s not my usual advice for finding success in the job market, but it’s important advice nonetheless.

On Saturday nightI attended my school reunion, which was 26 years in the making. I finished sixth form back in 1990 when World Cup fever gripped the nation. The tournament saw Germany win and a relatively unknown Italian player by the name ofSalvatore Schillaci become the top goal scorer.

When I was invited to attend the reunion a few months...

What does Brexit mean for executive jobseekers?

This morning the world woke up to the news that the UK has voted to leave the European Union. The polls earlier this week had shown a slight bias toward the Remain campaign, but the tide turned overnight with a wave of regions coming out on the side of Leave.

This morning I had a call with one of my‘Executive Edge’ Programmeclients – someone I’ve been working with for a little while now to help navigate the executive job market properly to define, find and then secure the position he really w...

Webinar for ACCA on how the job market really works!

On 18 February I travelled down to London to deliver the first of two webinars for ACCA on how to find success in the job market.

Over 160 people attendedthe first ‘live’ webinar, which focused on how to access the ‘hidden market’, the place where a high proportion of job opportunities exist that are never advertised on job boards or placed with professional recruiters. It also covered how to position yourself correctly on LinkedIn and utilise the platform as both a ‘shop window’ and a ‘proac...

Two golden nuggets for executive jobseekers!

I’ve always believed that in every conversation, every meeting, every book that I read and in every presentation that I hear that there is at least one golden nugget!

The golden nugget is the takeaway, it’s the key point and the thing that I can use moving forward to improve my situation and grow as an individual. It also fuels my passion for lifelong learning, which I think is essential for success in both our personal and professional lives.

I used to fall victim to excessive information ac...

What changes will you make in 2016?

As 2015 draws to a close and the holiday season is nearly upon us it’s time to reflect on the year almost gone and also to look to the future.

It can be tempting to reflect back on the year and focus on the things we didn’t do. While this might be a natural human tendency it rarely serves our purpose well and in my opinion celebrating the successes, breakthroughs and achievements we had no matter how small is extremely important.

I used to be an advocate of setting New Year’s resolutions, yet...

Mentoring ‘Team Inspire’ – IoD £10 Challenge 2015

For the past three weeks I’ve had the privilege of working with four students from Nottingham Trent University as part of the 10 Business Challenge run by the Institute of Directors (IoD). As an IoD member I was very keen to get involved, particularly as it was all in the name of a very worth cause, namely the Jon van Geest Cancer Research Centre in Nottingham.

Each team was given 10 and challenged to turn it into as much money as possible in two weeks. My team, which we named ‘Team Inspire’...
