FIGHTS: PREVIEW - ROH Invades Texas, stirs controversy

Notable Texas standouts absent, ZBF.com blamed
by
Bowie V. Ibarra

Like many of my other south Texas pro-wrestling brothers and sisters, the Ring of Honor Invades Texas show has been on our minds for months now!  And just a few days away, not only has the show built a great card with outstanding ROH stars participating, but a great selection of Texas talent getting a chance to shine on the show as well. Curiously enough, it hasn't been without controversy.  But we'll cover that in a bit.  The good news is the card itself.  Here's a brief preview of the show, with many portions blatantly ripped off from the Official Ring of Honor website and compiled in one convenient location for your perusal. TEXAS TALENT BOOKED TO COMPETE In the tradition of Ring of Honor on the road, some of the best regional talent are put on display.  This trip to San Antonio is no different, as several names from the San Antonio and central Texas indy wrestling scene will be competing in a ROH ring! Those names include:Multi-Time Texas Indy Champ Ray RoweAJ SummersRudy RussoCarsonRicky Starks MARK BRISCOE vs. A MEMBER OF SCUM

Make no mistake, Mark Briscoe is a crazy hillbilly.  But he's a crazy hillbilly that knows his way around the Ring of Honor.  Mark and his brother, Jay, are the backbone of the organization, and brutal warriors to boot.

So what a great matchup to put him up against any of the crazy members of the SCUM stable:  Jimmy Jacobs, Matt Hardy, Rhett Titus, and Steve Corino.  What the members of SCUM might give up on power, SCUM can match with science and skullduggery.  This one should be fun.

WOMEN OF HONOR MATCHUP
ATHENA
vs.
BARBI HAYDEN

The Skandaar Akbaar-trained Athena brings her science and skill to the ring against the doll-faced Barbi Hayden.

In only a few years time, Barbi Hayden has proved to be a rising star on the Texas Indy scene.  Her most recent rubbermatch against NWA Women's Champ Kacee Carlisle proved she was an amazing talent, and just needs to sharpen those skills to take it to the next level.

Athena, on the other hand, has been on the Texas indy scene for a lot longer, and has a long list of accomplishments in the state, including defeating Jessica Havoc in the finals of the ACW Queen of Queens Tournament.  Here O-Face cutter from the top rope is one of the most devastating moves on the scene, and she plans to unleash it on Barbi Saturday.
DREAM MATCH ACH vs. JAY LETHAL People are already calling this high-flying matchup the 'Fight of the Night', and its hard not to make that judgement, either.  Both competitors are amazing athletes, and it looks to be a match that lives up to the hype.  Many fans in central Texas have watched ACH grow into the rising star of Texas.  It's great to see him in the ROH ring. From the official ROH Website:
"Saturday night June 1st Ring of Honor makes its debut in San Antonio, TX and one man looking extremely forward to this road trip is ACH.  For him it is a homecoming of sorts as ACH originally hails from Austin, TX and broke into the sport of pro wrestling on the independent circuit of the Lone Star State before breaking out nationwide and eventually signing a full-time ROH contract. Now when ROH returns to his home state for the first time since 2009, ACH will face one of the toughest test of his Ring of Honor career when he faces former World TV Champion Jay Lethal in singles competition... "Signing that contract was one of the most exciting days of my life." said ACH to ROHWrestling.com, "But coming back to Texas for a Ring of Honor event AND facing Jay Lethal, well that's right up near the top of the list.  The pressure is on to show the fans back home, in-person, why I deserve to be in the ring with one of the best wrestlers competing today.   Adam Cole and Michael Elgin, those were the two names talked about as the breakout starts of 2012.  Well this time next year, it is going to be my name everyone is talking about like that and it would be perfect if it all starts in Texas! And to be perfectly honest, Lethal has always been one of the guys I looked up to when I first started wrestling.  He was an inspiration for getting started in the first place so facing him makes this all the more special. " ACH certainly has all the potential to be that next breakout star for ROH but he will have to give it his all if he hopes to top Jay Lethal in one-on-one competition!    PROVING GROUNDS SCRAP
ROH TV CHAMP MATT TAVEN
vs.
'DIE HARD' EDDIE EDWARDS

From the official ROH Website:

Coming off a successful Proving Ground victory at “Dragon's Reign” over Tadarius Thomas, World TV Champion Matt Taven will face another PG challenge when ROH debuts in San Antonio on June 1st. Unlike Thomas though, this challenger is one who knows all too well what it takes to become TV Champion..after all, he was the FIRST.  That's right, on Saturday June 1st it will be World TV Champion Matt Taven versus “Die Hard” Eddie Edwards in a Proving Ground Challenge! If Edwards defeats Taven or lasts the time limit then Eddie will receive a future TV Title match to go along with the World Title bout he has scheduled for “Live and Let Die” in Columbus on June 8th. “They say Eddie Edwards made this title.” Matt Taven offered to ROHWrestling.com, “That may be true with his wins over Davey Richards, Rhett Titus, Petey Williams, and all the rest but he still has to prove himself to me, to me and the H...O...T. You're no better than the rest Eddie and being the first ever TV champion, being the first ever triple crown winner, those things do not automatically make it so you deserve a shot at my TV Title. You will go the same way as Mark Briscoe, as ACH, as Tadarius Thomas....down. There will be no title opportunity in your future, much less a second reign, and when I am done with you in San Antonio, I expect you to tell everyone else what the hoopla around Matt Taven is all about.” It's World TV Champion Matt Taven versus “Die Hard” Eddie Edwards under Proving Ground Rules and it will go down on Saturday June 1st in San Antonio, TX! Can Edwards head into his Columbus World Title match with a TV Title shot in his back pocket? Or will Taven overcome the biggest challenge of his ROH career?
FORMER WORLD TV CHAMPS COLLIDE
ADAM COLE vs. RODERICK STRONG

From the official ROH Website:

On June 1st ROH heads to San Antonio, TX for the very first time! Already signed for the event Davey Richards challenging for the World Title against the winner of Jay Briscoe/BJ Whitmer, a Texas Tornado Tag Team Match with Michael Elgin & BJ Whitmer versus 2 SCUM Members, and Jay Lethal taking on Texas' own ACH! Now, coming off their Triple Threat collision in Belle Vernon, ROH officials have signed a rematch between two former World TV Champions as Roderick Strong goes one-on-one with the very man who beat him last year on ROH TV, Adam Cole! “Rematch.” said Roderick Strong to ROHWrestling.com, “That's the word of the day because that is what I never got! Adam Cole beat me for the belt on TV in June last year, he lost it in March of this year, and not one damn time did Ring of Honor try sign on the rematch. I'm not complaining, just pointing out the truth bro. So consider this the rematch that never happened Adam, and just like what would have happened if I had ever had the chance to win my belt back, you are getting beat down.” Cole, who suffered the pinfall loss to BJ Whitmer in that Triple Threat in Belle Vernon, has been told by Nigel McGuinness he is in-line for a future World Title match but if Strong beats him in San Antonio, compiled with the Belle Vernon loss and as his championship loss at “Border Wars 2013”, one has to wonder if McGuinness will be able to keep that promise. The pressure is certainly on for Cole in San Antonio...
TEXAS TORNADO TAG TEAM MATCH
MICHAEL ELGIN & BJ WHITMER
vs.
2 SCUM MEMBERS

From the official ROH Website:

“Border Wars 2013” proved to be a mixed bag in the war against Steve Corino and S.C.U.M. BJ Whitmer was successful in his “I Quit” match with Rhett Titus but the high stakes tag team match with Michael Elgin, Jay Lethal, and shockingly Kevin Steen battling Jimmy Jacobs & Cliff Compton did not yield triumphant results. Lethal was hurt which left Elgin to battle it out alone against two men, Kevin stepped up to take Jay's spot in the match but ultimately ended up with his shoulders pinned by Jacobs...a victory that not only reinserted Corino into the announcer's position but secured S.C.U.M a future World Title match. Coming out of that, as we reported yesterday , Steen is now looking to go it alone and take apart his former unit piece-by-piece. As for Elgin, he is certainly not yet done with Corino's motley crew... “It was a noble gesture from Kevin to step up on Saturday.” said Elgin to ROHWrestling.com, “I doubt he gave a damn about me fighting it out alone, I know it was more about revenge on SCUM, but it was still a nice thought. What's not a nice thought is that in Kevin's attempt to get revenge, he ended up giving Corino his voice back and he gave SCUM a World Title match on top of that. I'm glad to see you want to go this alone Kevin because, quite frankly, after that I don't think anyone in this locker room is ready to put faith in you just yet. As for me, SCUM we are not done, not by a long shot and in San Antonio I am looking for you, any two of you, to step up to the plate and fight. Compton, Jacobs, Hardy, hell even Corino himself if he still has it in him to lace up his boots...I don't give a damn which of you it is. Just show up prepared to fight...” When pressed for who he would want to be his partner in this tag team battle, Elgin said there was one man at the top of his list, a man who could be World Champion come June 1st, “Buzzsaw” BJ Whitmer! “I'm happy Elgin would want me as his partner.” said BJ, “And while I don't know how Nigel would want it to go down, if I beat Jay Briscoe and come to San Antonio as the World Champion, hell I'd fight twice that night if I have to. As a matter of fact, if Elgin's game and I know he will be, what say we make this tag team fight a little more fun, why don't we throw a little bit of Texas in there and do it Tornado style? SCUM likes to toss the rules out the window whenever they get a chance so why don't we just add more chaos to the mix!” Nigel heard the request and has granted it with a smile on his face! When ROH debuts in San Antonio on June 1st, it will be “Unbreakable” Michael Elgin & “Buzzsaw” BJ Whitmer vs. Two Members of S.C.U.M fighting it out under Texas Tornado Rules!  McGuinness has informed us that should Whitmer capture the World Title in Richmond he will have to take another look at this match since a World Title bout has already been guaranteed for that night but for now, it's Whitmer/Elgin vs. SCUM when honor comes to Texas!

 ROH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
JAY BRISCOE (C)

vs.
"AMERICAN WOLF" DAVEY RICHARDS

From the official ROH Website:

Both men are former World Champions, they have reigned as World Tag Team Champions together, and one of them was also the first World TV Champion as well as the first ever Triple Crown Winner in ROH history. They are Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards, collectively they are known as The American Wolves, and in the month of June either, or both, individuals could be known as the NEW Ring of Honor World Champion! “I took a look at our upcoming events,” said Nigel McGuinness, “and decided to load up on the World Title matches for our fans around the country. We need to mark our debut in San Antonio with a World Title match and West Virginia was so good to us last time that I knew one had to happen there as well. Then I took a look at our locker room and it hit me that there were two individuals in particular who, in my mind, deserved a chance to reclaim something they lost. Davey Richards has been boxed out of the picture since he lost to Kevin Steen at Best in the World nearly a year ago and Eddie Edwards, after he took on Steen at our last visit to Charleston, ended up in the same position this year when he lost the Defy or Deny battle. Two former World Champions, two of the best in the world today, and I know no matter if it's Jay Briscoe, Adam Cole, or BJ Whitmer who holds the belt that both Wolves will give the fans their money's worth in a World Title bout! Plus, as a fan myself, the possibility of seeing Eddie and Davey tussle once again is just too good.” McGuinness has determined that it will be Richards vs. the ROH World Champion on June 1st when Ring of Honor debuts in San Antonio, TX at the San Antonio Shrine Auditorium and on June 7th when we come back to Charleston, WV & The Civic Center, Edwards will return to the site of his last World Title match to challenge the champion! It could be Jay Briscoe coming in as defending champion, it could be Adam Cole, it could be BJ Whitmer, in Charleston it could even be Edwards/Richards: Round V! Plus whoever makes it through all of this as World Champion still has Michael Elgin to worry about since “Unbreakable” won a #1 Contender's Match over Jay Lethal at “Supercard of Honor VII” in NYC!  Davey Richards gets his shot in San Antonio, Eddie Edwards gets his in Charleston...the World Title scene is as hot as ever this spring and summer and you can get tickets to catch the action for all of these live events right here in the ROH Store! CONTROVERSIAL ABSENCE As the tremendous ROH Invades Texas card was finalized, ZombieBloodFights.com and many other fans on the Texas scene noted the absence of two of Texas' most outstanding wrestlers. Scot Summers and Ryan Genesis, known in the southern territories as The Kingz of the Underground, have been running roughshod over Texas tag teams for months now.  It could be argued 'The Underground Icon', 'Showtime' Scot Summers kept the Texas Indy scene afloat, and provided a strong foundation as its spiritual leader across the state that eventually grew into the Texas Indy Renaissance it is experiencing today.  Summers has faced such stars as Bryan Danielson, Chris Hero, Jimmy Jacobs, ACH, Robert Evans, and many others in his climb to the top of the Texas scene.  It seemed a natural for Scot to be picked. 'The Ace' Ryan Genesis has been a big name on the Texas scene as well.  The guy is tough as nails and has legit boxing hand skills as well.  That's bad news for opponents.  Aligning himself with Scot, the two went on to great triumphs in Texas, including a run as the NWA World Tag Champs, losing the titles to the IWGP World Tag Champs, the Killer Elite Squad. When ROH announced their plans to travel to SATX, I immediately called for the dream matchup in an online video. KotU vs. Briscoes: Make it Happen ROHhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9vTsnyBZ5Q I posted a follow up with my Texas Indy wrestling fan friends:  A week away, I noticed their very obvious absence.  So I posted yet another video:  The following afternoon, 'Showtime' posts a bizzare rant, intimating that ROH brass was calling for a halt to my fan-made videos.

From Scot Summers official Facebook page:"RING OF HONOR has an Extremely talented roster. The Briscoe Brothers-SCUM-American Wolves & many others are fearless warriors. They have been Multi-Time World CHAMPIONS. KOTU has a lot repsect for Jay & Mark, Jimmy Jacobs & the rest of the boys. THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE BRASS OR OffICE OF ROH. FACT: THE RING OF HONOR OffICE TOLD ITS OWN EMPLOYEE & KNOWN ASSOCIATE/ SUPPORTER of (KOTU) Ryan Genesis ...& Scot Summers THAT WE & OR OUR FANS NEED TO STOP POSTING VIDS & FLYERS ON FACEBOOK/TWITTER DEMANDING & PROMOTING TO SEE THE KINGZ OF THE UNDERGROUND VS BRISCOES OR VS SCUM OR ANYONE ELSE FOR THAT MATTER. WAY TO BLOW OFF YOUR LOYAL TEXAS FANS ROH. HONOR DIED IN ROH THE MINUTE DANIELSON, PUNK, JOE, MCGUINNESS, JERRY LYNN, Claudio Castagnoli, CHRIS HERO, Adam Pearce & Charlie Haas ALL LEFT ROH. TRUE HONOR LIVES IN TEXAS! WE HAVE THE GREATEST WRESTLING FANS IN THE COUNTRY."

I just want to say that Scot never put me up to making any of these videos.  I only did it as a fan.  And doing what fans do, I threw my support to the online wrestling community for the wrestler I support.  Why ROH is mad at ZombieBloodFighs.com and intimating I torpedoed the Kingz chances at participating is beyond me. For what its worth, I still support ROH, and am a Scot Summers fan to the bitter end.  I'm just disappointed ROH made that choice, if this is, indeed, how it played out.

Maybe Scot was right?  Maybe there is a conspiracy to keep him from the pro-wrestling glory he deserves?

Part 1
 Part 2
Expect more blogs centering around the controversy as the day approaches, readers. ROH brass be damned. In the end, me and many others from Texas are going to go out and enjoy ourselves Saturday June 1st, 2013, at the San Antonio Shrine Auditorium for the historic second Texas visit of Ring of Honor. I can't wait. =================  BOWIE V. BLOOD/FIGHT: Female Blood Fight tournament turns shoot fight

WILD NIGHT FUELS FINALISTS HEEL TURN
by
Bowie Ibarra

ZombieBloodFights.com is always bringing the best in Zombie, Blood, or Fight related stories to you, the reader.  And this entry is no different.  In fact, you might say it has all three in one live evening.  On this special occasion, Gore Noir Magazine sponsored BloodLust 2013in good ol' San Antonio, Texas.  SATX has always had a great horror community, and it was great to come together in a wild night of art, gruesomely beautiful photography, and FEMALE BLOOD FIGHTS, BABY!!!  WOOOO!!

Here's how it went down.
The pool was set down, like an empty canvas.  And then the blood was poured in.  In truth, I was hoping a goat was sacrificed on stage, or in the very least, a goat had its throat cut and blood drained before every edible part of its body was cooked and everyone was served cabrito.  Hey, it's San Antonio.  It could happen. Turns out the blood was a mixture of chocolate and... chocolate, but it was red.  I'm down. And so were the first contestants.  A girl named Suzy Hellcat was the first contestant.  She arrived on the stage with a beer in hand.  Clearly, indulging in a little alcohol is the key to victory.  She had a size advantage on her adversary, and though I thought being top-heavy was going to serve the faster opponent, the adversary could not get past Suzy's power game. Snaps from the first round scrap below.

The next bout of the first round had two very enthusiastic ladies ready to mix it up.  And boy did they.

The loser of the second round matchup enjoyed posing for pictures sucking her 'bloody' thumb for the fans.

In the next matchup, noted pin up/alt-fashion/fetish/gore/horror model and my personal favorite to win the event, Marcy Horror, was in attendance.  Having relocated to Texas, she was ready to mix it up with her first round opponent.

Art was also put on display.  I picked up this punk rock princess work for a great price from vendor Crypt Keeper Creations.  Check them out, and give her some business.
This lovely was modeling her sexy dead zombie soldier look.  When I asked her what inspired the outfit, she said it was dedicated to her husband.  He's a soldier in the military.  He's also still alive. What would Freud say?
Obscuri Photography was on hand to provide your own gory fantasy photo shoot.  Ever wanted to take that pic with your throat slit, but just couldn't convince the Wal-Mart photo lady it was a good idea?  We-he-hell, now you can!
I had the opportunity to take a pic with Marcy before her second round bout.  Here she is, prepping for the bout with a Blue Hawaiian.
Here she is again, because, lets face it, you just can't get enough Macy Horror. Yes, that's right.  Her shirt reads, 'BloodSlut'.  Good times.   And again.  A friend said she looked like Jodya Arias.  I don't see it.  Do you?   And then another holy crap moment was seeing Gore Noir's own poster girl, Suzy Rubbish, was in attendance as well.  I remembered Suzy from her slit throat Madonna pic from a magazine months before.   Via Obscuri Photography Facebook Fan page, the Slit-Throat Madonna.

Also, if you like the photo, get a print for yourself for $25 bucks (cheap!) to help raise funds for Gore Noir, who had all their stuff ripped off from their trip from Cali to Texas in Arizona.  C'mon, Joe Arpio, you asshole.  Get on it! The starting price is $25 but I encourage you to go above and beyond that to help out!

This link is for the $25 its for paypal and credit and debit cards as well.
https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=PAB8VPV8SQZ3Y So, anyway, here's the pic with Suzy.  She was also super awesome.

Because two are better than one.   Fans were lined up waiting for the second round, when the final pairing from the first round came in.  I thought for sure someone had put in a ringer.

And away they went, working the Greco-Roman style.
 Full mount on the ringer.

Suzy Hellcat returned and was ready to mix it up.  She took the next round victory to take it to the finals.

Attitudes started to change at around this point in the bout.

Marcy returned to take on the wild one.  She advanced to the final in a compellingly playful encounter.

So, before the final round, we were treated to a great and bloody burlesque piece in which the protagonists has captured two people and tied them to chairs.  She slices the neck of the first captive, resulting in a spray of blood and the protagonist disrobing.

That's when she approached the second victim and pulled out the buzz saw.

Having cut her open, she then proceeded to pull out her entrails and eat them, also disrobing some more.  Remember, we're still doing burlesque here.

This was a fun moment, when she threw the entrails at the crowd before slowly and oh-so-seductively removing her thigh-highs.

Now that was something you don't see every day. And then came the final of the 2013 BloodLust Female Blood Wrestling tournament. Marcy Horror vs. Suzy Hellcat for the title of World BloodFight Champion.

This is pretty much the moment when shit got real.  Hellcat wanted the title, and what had been a playful romp in the choco-blood became a shoot fight of the craziest proportions.
Hellcat snuck in a neck choke here.  I thought Marcy was going to lose one of her gauges in her ear as the bloodfight became a San Antonio streetfight.

 Hellcat cranked a headlock.
But Marcy was able to escape and take Hellcat's back at the buzzer.
The two finalists waited in anticipation for the crowd to help the judges decide.

Winner, and new champ, Marcy Horror.
And a show of sportsmanship at the end.
It was a great and blood night filled with blood fights, hot bloody women, and bloody good beer. This is Bowie Ibarra reporting for ZombieBloodFights.com.

The noise the ghosts made as they pursued Bill was like the wind dancing across a treeline, or the collective exhale of a group of people.  Their shadows danced across the moist trees, green vines, and leafy foliage like the hands of a child making shadows of monsters on a nursery school wall.  The disembodied voices taunted him in a language long forgotten, audible over his heavy breaths, his hands slapping away flora, and the squishing of his boots against the muddy jungle ground.
Fear laced the blood that was pumping through his heart as he turned to look at his ghostly pursuers.  Their gray, snaking mists swirled and dashed after him around ancient trees.  Sinister expressions shifted around the malevolent fogs like faces in the clouds.  Long, misty arms stretched out like the branches of a tree long dead, bereft of leaves for decades.  The fingers stretched and threatened as if they were spikes, or blades.  They snaked through the foliage, playing hide and seek in the jungles of Central America.  But this chase would not end with the joyful laughter of friends.
A large root jutting out of the jungle floor tripped Bill, sending him flying into a tree.  His pith helmet absorbed most of the collision against his head.  But it still hurt.  His safari khakis were so soaked in sweat that there was an audible splat.  He groaned, dazed.
It took him a moment to realize he had dropped the source of his impending doom.  At his feet lay a scroll.  Tied to the scroll was a piece of heavy paper, a map to the temple he had discovered, a shrine with a curse.
Turning to look at the ancient spirits in hot pursuit, he picked the scroll off the ground before he returned to his feet.  His eyes bulged as fear pierced his heart.  The ghosts manifested themselves, and though they whispered in the language long dead, the sound of their mocking laughter was completely understood.
Knowing his fate was sealed, he started running again, delaying the inevitable.  No one ever ventured this deep into this particular portion of the Guatemalan jungle.  No one, neither native nor animal, was going to help him.
            Or so he thought.
In a clearing just ahead, Bill could make out a tent and a campfire.  Someone was clearly present at the site.  It was a chance to at least get the scroll away from him.  Perhaps the spirits would spare him if he released the scroll.
            He ran to the camp.
In the clearing, a teenage girl was preparing a simple meal of beans, vegetables, and bread.  She wore her long brown hair in pigtails.  Her pale face held a gentle sea of freckles.
Bill ran faster, feeling the spirits close behind.  The clearing was just moments away.  He knew the ghosts were getting closer as the air around him was beginning to hold a subtle chill in the balmy heat of the jungle.
Bill broke through the treeline into the clearing.  The girl shrieked as Bill fell by the campfire, panting like an exhausted dog.
“Little girl,” he gasped, hyperventilating.  “Take this.  Hide it.  Never open it up.  Do you understand me?  Never.”
The little girl trembled in fear.  Her eyes became glassy.  Her heart beat against her chest with fearful cruelty.
When the ancient ghosts broke the treeline and appeared in the clearing, they grabbed the unsuspecting explorer.  Bill Frasier was prepared.
Lifting him up into the air, the mysterious fog wrapped him up tight, covering his mouth.  It was an effective gag, as all the little girl could hear were his stifled cries of terror.  Though she could barely hear him, she felt his terror in his eyes.
The little girl watched as he floated up into the air before being pulled straight into the darkness of the jungle, never to be seen again.
Trembling, the little girl looked at the object she had been handed.  It was a carved tube of wood.  Along the tube were elaborately carved stone faces.  Tied by a thin piece of hemp cord was a piece of cloth.  The little girl dare not touch or adjust any of it.  As far as she was concerned, the tube was probably responsible for the ghosts.  The man said never to open it, after all.
It was very fortunate that her mother and father returned to camp.  They had traveled just yards away to catch fish in the river.
“Sara,” asked her father.  “We brought lunch.  Is the fire ready?”
Sara’s mother knew immediately something was amiss.  “Sara, what’s wrong?” she asked.
Sara tossed the scroll into the nearby brush.  It easily became hidden.  “I’m fine, mommy.  Just a little scared.”
Her mother kneeled down beside her daughter.  She wiped a tear that had fallen across her cheek, saying, “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
Sara didn’t want to look foolish in front of her mother.  So she meekly responded, “I just got a little scared, that’s all.”
Sara’s mother gave her a big hug.  “Oh, you don’t have anything to be afraid of, sweetheart.  We’re here.”
Sara’s father had already started cooking the fish, stating, “I think the village of El Rincón is just a few more miles from here.  We should probably take off in the morning.”
“No,” shouted Sara. “We should just go tonight!”
“Sara,” said her mother.  “Listen to your father.  He’s right.  It’s getting late, and we’d get lost in this jungle at night.
“But we could be in danger here,” said Sara desperately.
“Sara, calm down,” stated her father.  “What’s got into you?  Jesus has brought us this far to find those that need to be saved.  He will protect us tonight.”
Sara’s perception of the saving grace of Jesus was suddenly skewed.  She had just witnessed the fog of demonic forces take a man into the jungle.  The man disappeared.  No Jesus to save him.  It was just the ungodly force that consumed him.  What made her think it couldn’t happen to her, or her parents?
“Sara, everything is going to be alright.  Say a prayer with me.”
Sara shared a prayer with her loving mother.  And though later that night she ate in peace as the Father of Jesus spread stars across the night sky, she still couldn’t rest until her Lord brought the sun up in the morning sky the next morning.
            Jesus favored her.

SAN ANTONIO, 2010

“The San Antonio arts community has lost a true hero.”
            “I agree.”
“It’s a sad day for the arts here in San Antonio.”
            “It is.”
“Seventy years.  Can you believe that?”
            “She was a real dynamo.”
It was the theme of the afternoon at Ms. Sara McNulty’s funeral.  All Lorraine Blacksmith and Jackalyn White could do was agree as they stood together watching the funeral party pay their respects.
“You know, when Ms. McNulty founded this museum years ago, I never thought it would get as big as it became,” said a mourner.  “But I’ve always been a supporter.  I wanted to see it work, to see it grow, and it did.”
“It got bigger than any of us could ever imagine,” said Lorraine.
“She spent decades building the museum up,” chimed in Jackalyn.  “Its reputation grew and grew every year.”
            “Every day,” countered Lorraine.

“And the arts community was elevated with it,” continued Jackalyn with a subtle look at Lorraine.  Though the two representatives of the museum had worked together for a time, it was Jackalyn that did not appreciate the upstart Lorraine, who had worked at the museum several years earlier.

“Have a good rest of the day,” said the mourner, excusing herself from the awkward tension.
Lorraine and Jackalyn glanced at each other.  Both took a deep breath simultaneously and looked away.
“I’m so proud of the work Ms. McNulty provided for our fine city,” said a tall and well-groomed man, who approached the ladies.
“Well, we owe a lot of that to you, Mr. Sosa,” said Jackalyn.  “Your donations to the museum have led to the new wings that have housed some of our most treasured artistic and historical artifacts.”
“It is labor of love, Ms. White,” he said, smiling magnanimously.  “I’ve always allowed for my resources to provide for the artistic and intellectual growth of San Antonio.  And as a city Councilman, it’s important to nurture growth like this museum in our city.”
“And it most certainly has,” said Lorraine.  “The exhibits we have been able to bring in due to your donations have provided us a venue for local, national, and even international artists.”
“The museum has always had a broad spectrum of modern and ancient art,” chimed in Jackalyn.
“That is true, and a wonderful attribute to the museum.”  He then turned to Lorraine.  “And, may I say, it is good to see you again, Lorraine,” he said, reaching in for a side hug that Lorraine accepted cordially.  “How is your schooling?”
“Done with school.  Just working now.”
“Ah,” he said, changing the subject by the subtext of her response, which didn’t seem to intimate she enjoyed the work.  “Well, I hope to see you two again under more jovial circumstances,” he said, excusing himself.
The two ladies watched the funeral party take their leave of the cemetery.  Mourners had spent the past twenty minutes paying their final respects at Ms. McNulty’s grave.
“She will be missed,” said Jackalyn.
Lorraine chuckled.  She knew Jackalyn was as sincere as the fox of fables past.  She really did not appreciate the false attitude.  Lorraine remembered how rude Jackalyn had been to her mother, Helen Blacksmith, who used to work for Ms. McNulty for many years.
Lorraine responded.  “Well, Jackalyn, the peace and happiness she brought to the museum and the community will be missed as well.”
Jackalyn felt the subtle jab.  As per her personality, she chose to make sure she remained in control.  “Well, considering I’ll be running the museum now, I will try and keep the peace like she did.”
“God help the McNulty,” murmured Lorraine.
Jackalyn heard the remark.  “Care to say that again?” she asked, turning to Lorraine.
“God blessed the McNulty with such capable people to run it.”  Lorraine didn’t want to fight.  Participating in open conflict was not something she was good at.
With the pride of a lion, Jackalyn beamed.  “Yes, he did.”
“Ladies,” said an approaching mourner.  “My condolences.  Two deaths so close together is so hard to deal with.”
“Thank you, Ms. Baumgarten,” said Lorraine.  The reminder of her mother’s death only a few years earlier gave her a twinge of sadness.
“Your mother will be remembered along with Ms. McNulty fondly by all.”
“Yes,” Jackalyn replied solemnly.  “Yes, she will.”
Sally Baumgarten was a Gold Member of the museum, and a bit of a gossip.  Today was no exception.
“So, I guess you ladies are excited to hear who Ms. McNulty has chosen to run the museum?”
“Well,” said Jackalyn, lacing her tone with arrogance.  “I will be taking the reins very soon.”
“That’s not what I heard,” said Ms. Baumgarten, smiling.  She didn’t like Jackalyn, either, and enjoyed yanking her chain.  As a Gold Member of the museum, Jacklyn could not afford to insult her.
In truth, Baumgarten had a real piece of news that she knew would bug Jackalyn.  As a confidante of the late Ms. McNulty, she had been privy to the thought process in picking her heir, though she didn’t know the final decision.
“Tomorrow at twelve, as per request by Ms. McNulty, her legal advisor, Mr. Gonzalez, is going to read her will.  In it, she will name her successor.”
“That’s impossible,” said Jackalyn, smiling, thinking she was being teased.  “It’s clear it will be me.”
“Well, looks like we’ll all find out tomorrow at twelve,” she said, shaking their hands once again.  “I’ll see you ladies then.”  Ms. Baumgarten walked off, smirking.
“I swear, I would choke that lady to death if I could,” grumbled Jackalyn.
            “Classy, Jackalyn,” chuckled Lorraine.
“Just as classy as the place you work,” said Jackalyn.  “What do you do again?  Hustle old people for books?”
Lorraine groaned.  “They’re alumni directories, and they are a valuable networking tool and…”
“… heirloom quality book,” they both said together.
“I know all that,” said Jackalyn.  “Well, if you ever want out of that dream job, I could get you work here on our cleaning team,” said Jackalyn with a cruel smile.  “I know you worked here previously, so you would know where all the trash cans are and high-traffic areas to mop.”
Lorraine sighed.  Her job wasn’t the best.  But it made some money to maintain the house bills for the place she lived in alone.  Her family house.
“Thanks, Jackalyn,” said Lorraine as one of the final mourners approached.
“Condolences, ladies,” said the man, clad in a black suit.  “We’ll miss her.”
“You were always one of her closest friends, Mr. Strickland,” said Jackalyn.
Reece Strickland chuckled.  “I wouldn’t go that far.”
“Your donations have been appreciated, Mr. Strickland,” said Lorraine.  “In fact, Mr. Sosa was here moments ago.  You two are our most generous providers.”
“Mr. Sosa, eh,” he said, smiling.  “Well, I’m glad I missed my rival’s tribute to our beloved Ms. McNulty.”
The comment went over Lorraine’s head as she remembered something.
“Oh,” gasped Lorraine.  “I need to get to work.  It was good to see you, Mr. Strickland,” she said, shaking his hand.
“Have fun,” said a smug Jackalyn.
“I will,” said Lorraine, smiling back sarcastically.  “Meanie,” she muttered as she walked away.
Jackalyn thought she heard what Lorraine said, and eyeballed her as her former colleague at the museum walked away.

BLOOD - REVIEW - 'Maniac' returns, making the old new again

by Bowie Ibarra

One of the things I noted at Texas Frightmare was a new poster for 'Maniac', a classic, underrated, and forgotten slasher gem from the late 70s.  When I asked about it, I was told they were remaking it with Elijah Wood.  Then I found out that they were having a showing of it that same night, and I couldn't help but have to attend.

In a way, I regret it.  It was that horrifyingly good.

The movie starts off pretty hot, and takes off from there, with the first victim eating it before the first five minutes of reel has run its course.

Like the original, the protagonist is a psychological mess who hunts down women to kill them before scalping them.  All his victims can thank his mom for raising him in such a Manson-esque environment.  Those scarring moments from his crappy childhood are put on display for all to see, the images that haunt Frank to the very day.  They are the driving force behind his mania and need to be heavily medicated to prevent from falling into his psychotic episodes.

The movie is very loyal to the original script, but turns up the violence several notches.  The first-person perspective that it is shot in also adds a massively creepy dynamic to the movie that will chill you, putting you in the driver's seat as he murders young women.  This choice, as well as others, make it just as disturbing as the original, if not more so.  You kind of have to let go of the 'CCTV' cams that would have picked up a lot of suspicious activity that he did publicly, but it's still plausible that it could go down the way it did.

As you learn more about the character's past and what a piece of shit mother he had, you can't help but feel a little sorry for Elijah's Frank.  It helps that Wood does not look half as sleazy as Joe Spinell's original.  He's just as big of a mess, though.

There are some great homage's to the movie's past, including a great shot that harkened back to the original poster, and a nod to 'Silence of the Lambs' when 'Goodbye Horses' begins to play at a curiously appropriate time in the movie.

I found myself frightened more at how truthful the experiences of the character could be building (have built?) a madman at this very moment in our modern world.

With poor internet supervision, a gateway to great ideas or ghoulish terror, it wouldn't take long for a kid to right-click their way to naked chicks making out and then taking a shit in a cup before eating it, or a first person POV of all sorts of once-hidden freakshow intimacy put on eternal international display for cold cash.  Hell, I knew a dude who said his very own family member, who was 8, wakes up early and dials up porn on the internet.  That's the same kind of mindfuck that happen's to Frank's character in his youth, except Frank had to watch his own mother get violated of her own volition in front of her.  That gets a kid medicated, and that's even scarier.  Look at the latest string of mass murders that have a pharmaceutical culprit that is also at fault that is never talked about in the controlled news because of its deep pockets.

Knowing that these kinds of monsters could be nurtured in similar environments as Frank's character was right this very moment was enough to keep me frightened even as he hunted down and sliced his way through the victims in the movie, leading to his ultimate bloody meltdown.

A wiser man than myself once said to me after I told him I was scared of spiders, that the only thing that scared him more than anything else was people.  This movie was a great example of that.  Like Manson and others, poor Frank didn't have a chance as a kid.

This movie is terrifying in so many ways that it is completely ZombieBloodFights.com approved if you can handle it.  Get a hold of the original if you can.  It will totally creep you out and is just as chilling, if not more so, than this reboot.

ZOMBIES/BLOOD - ZBF.com pics @ Texas Frightmare 2013

by Bowie Ibarra

ZombieBloodFights.com mastermind Bowie V. Ibarra was able to join Permuted Press as well as some of their stable of writers at the 8th Annual Texas Frightmare Convention in Dallas, Texas.  Ibarra takes a moment to document some of the fun that was had.

Permuted Superfan 'Brave Blue Mice' was in attendance, having driven from Minnesota through a blizzard to the event.
Dude was wearing a Huracan Ramirez shirt.  I had to get the shot.  And how appropriate I was wearing my Star Man shirt.
Me with my foster dad Jacob Kier, Permuted Press kingpin.  I'm not sure why I'm doing the 'lucha hands', but there you go.

Permuted author Peter Clines (of the hit Ex-Heroes series) drops the big elbow on Bowie.
Great privilege to sit with Peter.

Holy crap!  Mercy the Rotten Cotton poster girl was in attendance!  She's even more stunning in person.  Not pictured was when she kicked me right in the ass with her studded high-heel shoes.  People thought that was weird.  People thought it was weirder that I begged her to do it.  I thought it was funny.
Loyal reader Scat Caserole made an appearance.  His shirt was the best.  It was great to finally say hello in person.   Nazis zombies.  I hate Nazi zombies.
Darren Tompkins of the Houston Zombie Walk was also in attendance.
Meeting readers who have been following the series even before I was with Permuted Press is always the best.  Here I am with reader Carrie and her husband.
Reader Chuck Mutch showed up as well.
 Predator.
 Zombie Santa
 Female Beetlejuice and Lydia Deetz.
Jigsaw.  Man, it would have totally rocked if she had a tricycle.
D-List zombie horror hack Bowie Ibarra.
Tim Long of the "Among the Living" zombie horror series giving the snooty author look.
Marilyn Burns is the reason I could not finish watching 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' the first time I saw it on VHS.  I stopped it as grandpa was trying to bash her head in with a hammer at the dinner table and did not watch it again for several years.
Rounding out my evening, having just seen a sneak preview of the 'Maniac' remake with Elijah Wood and finally getting my pic snapped with the elusive and mysterious DL Snell, author of 'Pavlov's Dog' among others. It was a great time with some great people and great stuff all around.  I look forward to doing it again soon! =================
