Conor Harrington (Ireland/UK)
Conor Harrington’s blend of the historical and hypermodern is unsurpassed. Currently based in London, the Irish former graffiti artist still paints outdoor murals worldwide to considerable acclaim, while enjoying a meteoric rise in his gallery career. Conor’s lauded large-scale paintings fuse realist figurative work inspired by old masters with abstractions taken from the graffiti scene that nurtured his talents. He is a central figure within a new breed of young artists tackling socio-political themes using fine art techniques in a context formerly reserved for street artists. His work combines contemporary and classical references to create an astonishingly resonant dialogue with the viewer (source: Lazarides) Our sincere thanks to devidsketchbook for being this Monday’s Curator on Artchipel.

Rub Kandy aka Mimmo Rubino | on Tumblr (Italy) - Revolver, Rome, Italy (2011)
Rub Kandy (Mimmo Rubino) is a an Italian artist and graphic designer. He always tries to do different things, focusing sometimes on techniques, sometimes on emotion, often on visual Identity. With an experimental approach, Rub explores ways to make art with different doses of aesthetics elements. His ingredients are graphic signs, solid forms, physical and conceptual ready mades, color, stories, symbols, elements of our visual culture, words and letters, techniques, neurosis, religion, culpability, memory, stubbornness, etc. Artist reveals and shares his creative process with Artchipel’s audience:
"I’m not working on identifying my brand but prefer to move by analogies, switching between paths. My creative method follows therefore two paths. One as a designer that is a clear line: from Problem to Solution, from Constraints to Resources… be exact! The other is a neurotic, dark line: Use an unsuitable material, express your rage, do something random… wait until the last minute! I like to build solid foundations to support my weak sensations, I like to design accurately broken machines." The best word to explain how Rub work is probably “Crossover". Please visit artist’s website or find his portfolio PDF.

Love Curtis Sittenfeld!
Curtis Sittenfeld did some interesting research for her latest novel, Sisterland. “I went to this New Age bookstore in a distant suburb of St. Louis. I basically went there and was like, ‘I’m doing research,’ and then I un-ironically bought some crystals," she told The Rumpus.

Do-Ho Suh - Bridging Home (2010)
"A replica of a Korean house installed into a small space between two larger homes in a Northern English City. The juxtaposition of one’s personal, safe space, located within a very foreign and impersonal environment raising questions of cultures and traditions. Mimicking old Korean architecture, the replica also served as a visual representation of the past. Home is a universal concept accepted by all cultures, but upon crossing boundaries, Suh urged his viewers to consider differences and similarities between the history of cultures."
