Tuesday Tunes: Shake it Off

It’s coming to the end of the year. This has been a tough one in my family. My mom’s Alzheimer’s disease has taken a huge toll on her this year. The occasional glimpses of recognition and the “I love yous’ are quite rare now and will eventually fade, but those moments…they are golden. They are cherished. They are locked in my heart forever.

ChristmasJusticeAs her health declined, I was reminded this fall that I can’t do everything, and that I must make choices. At the beginning, I fought it. Hard. But I just...

Monday Memories: In the Eyes of a Child

Out of the mouths of babes. The old cliche contains more truth than we realize. When my brother was about four or five years old, the family took a trip to Carlsbad Caverns. If you’ve never been there, it’s quite amazing. There are more than 119 known caves form when sulfuric acid dissolved surrounding limestone. Over time cave formations (orspeleothems) formed, creating a magic world underground.

My brother and I learned that stalagtiteshold “TIGHT”to the ceiling, and stalagmites, “MIGHT” rea...

Fitness Friday: Moderation

Tired business woman fall down from exhaustion in hotel roomI’m on a constant state of searching for balance these days. I’m an all-or-nothing person by nature, a perfectionist if you will. Don’t get me wrong, that particular trait has done well for me in my life–but as with any great strength, it’s also a great weakness.

So, when I do things, I tend to do them very well, which (usually, though not always) garners me praise. HOWEVER, it also brings its own set of challenges.

Challenge
Mitigation

It can take me a bit longer to complete tasks.
I *try* to tri...

Thursday – Christmas Day – Angel’s DO Exist!

(Christmas and Techno Thursday don’t seem to go together, so here is a reposting of a blog from December 2012, but one worth sharing. I hope you are as inspired as I am).

When I was a kid, my parents used to take me over to my cousin’s house to play. We jumped on the trampoline, played chase, and an excellent game of hide-and-go-seek. We had so much fun. As a child, I didn’t know that Gary was special. He was just my cousin, a boy my brother and I were lucky enough to play with.

As I grew olde...

Tuesday Tunes: Silent Night

Some memories don’t dim but only grow brighter with age. For me, one night stands out more clearly than most. Christmas Eve.

Christmas Eve services during my childhood were magical. The pastor dimmed the church’s lights and he lit his own candle from the Christ candle. Through the darkness, the simple quiet words of long-loved hymn. No organ; no piano. Juice soft, sweet voices. Candle by candle passed from hand to hand. Flame after flame lit. Finally, after all the candles were lit, we followe...

Monday Memories: Christmas Love

ChristmasStockingsMy mother made Christmas beautiful and special. Not because of the beautiful table she set with her wedding china, or the candles or the presents under the tree. But because each decoration, every gift, every special touch was touched by love.

Perhapsmy favorite Christmas itemis our Christmas stockings. My mom made them sometime soon after she and my dad were married. She made one for herself and my father, then for me when I was born and later for my brother. Whenthe family expanded, each new...
