Not Dead Yet…
Hi folks, I’m still here! Been in the woodshed smashing pulp and traveling. I’ll be starting two mentorships very soon. One through the SFWA, and another with hopes of getting a terrific non-fiction manuscript across the finish line. I’ll have announcements in the next few months for two projects I’m very excited about. (novel and novelette) In addition, I’ll have details regarding an amazing event I’ve been invited to in November. Meanwhile, [NSFW] is now available here as an audiobook. And it’s a trippy listen. Cheers! DSH

Evolution of the Cover for NSFW
Evolution of the book cover for my new novel NSFW. Not going to lie. I LOVE the cover for my new book NSFW. I’m going to SWAG this mother so much it’s going to be embarrassing. Yes, I’ll be opening a swag store on this site. It started with an author concept mock-up I do in the middle of a project to help visualize — and to procrastinate but still feel like I’m working. (see below). Tyler Miles Lockett is the amazing artist and a hell of a writer and… drum roll… he wasn’t supposed to do this cover. I…

DSH Indie Author Spotlight: Samuel Kaye
DSH Indie Author Spotlight: Samuel Kaye Howdy howdy, Today’s indie spotlight is on Samuel Kaye, author of Cinema. Full disclosure, SK and I are with the same publisher Whisk(e)y Tit Books. That being said, I absolutely LOVED this book. I received a copy last year, I think, and it was hands down one of my top three reads that year. It was unexpected, surprising, hilarious and smart, while still delivering a romp of a story. Such a great blend of philosophy, entertainment, humor, and whip smart characterizations of people you think you know. And not to talk it up, but…

DSH Indie Author Spotlight: Abigail Stewart
DSH Indie Author Spotlight: Abigail Stewart Author of Assemblage and The Drowned Woman Howdy folks, here is an 8-Question interview with author Abigail Stewart about writing, whatnot, and her new release, Assemblage. Full disclosure, Abby and I are with the same publisher Whisk(e)y Tit Books. I’m not going to write a review for Abby’s debut book, The Drowned Woman, but I will say this: The voice and style have been described as “vintage” and while I read it I very much caught a black and white french film vibe, which I loved, but the surprise was the read deepened even…

Russian interview Part IV of IV
Hi folks, Here ya, go. The wrap up with Polyandria NoAge regarding The Fountain (Russian translation due out October 2022 – translation by Anastasia Rudakova). XOXOX DSH – Can you describe an approximate portrait of the reader of “Fountain”? Who, in your opinion, is its target audience? Did you think about it when you’ve been writing the novel? Short answer: I think the reader of The Fountain is an astute reader, one who wants to be entertained and not condescended to. Who wants a complete story, but is delighted by humor and language, word play. I try to ask big…

Russian Interview with David Scott Hay – Part III of IV
Hi folks, Here’s Part III of my interview with Polyandria NoAge, publisher of the Russian translation of The Fountain (Oct, 2022, translation by Anastasia Rudakova). Mostly me grousing about modern art. Part IV Enjoy! XOXOX DSH – What is contemporary art for you? Do you like it more than old art? Or the interest is rather her professional – for you it is nothing more than an object of close study in your novel, as well as the art world itself? Short answer: The more abstract an idea is, the more subjective it is to bullshit. And thus, my attention…

RUSSIAN INTERVIEW WITH DAVID SCOTT HAY – PART II of IV
Howdy folks, Here is the second of a four part interview with David Scott Hay by the Russian publishing house Polyandria NoAge about his novel The Fountain and the upcoming Russian release (Sept 2022 – Translation by Anastasia Rudakova). This is a shorter section and talks about various spark points for the books, especially characters. Nearly all of them began as recognizable stereotypes, but as layers and POVs are revealed, I found they took on unexpected characteristics. It was a joy to excavate these characters as they wrestled with the temptation of the Fountain. Part III coming soon. Enjoy! XOXOXO…

DSH RUSSIAN INTERVIEW – PART I of IV
Howdy folks, Last summer I was approached by Polyandria NoAge, a Russian publishing house out of St. Petersburg to do a Russian translation of The Fountain. Plans were made to help launch the book with an overseas visit. And then war. After navigating the new situation, the book is now slated to be released there this September (translation by Anastasia Rudakova). They have been great to work with under crippling circumstances. To have a book with a slight anti-authoritarian bent being released in a country at war controlled by state-sponsored media was not on my BINGO card. We are currently…

[PANK] Magazine interviews David Scott Hay
Hi folks, Honored and pleased to have done this interview with Damien Roos at [PANK] Magazine. Damien bought The Fountain back in October at the Brooklyn Book Fair, my official unofficial launch. He read it and responded it to it. We poured a couple over ZOOM and had a few laughs. “The Fountain is a mad dash, meta and epic and loud. Hay shreds fine art culture and all its pretensions, sounding the call for true artists to do the very thing they were born to do: Create.” In this interview, we cover a range of topics such as authenticity…
