2011 Sex Gifts and Stocking Stuffers for $25 or Less

I genuinely believe that it is the thought that counts. I also believe that if you're in a relationship with someone you actually like, the gift of time together is one of the best gifts you can give. These sentiments (or cliche's if yo prefer) can be true and there's still an argument for giving at least a small physical token of your love or lust over the holidays.
Financially things are bad for many of us, and I don't believe any sexual good can come from extending yourself financially ...

Sex Books Holiday Gift Guide 2011

Sex books make great gifts. Whether you do it old school, buying square things made of paper from real people who stand behind desks with cash registers, or you prefer to swipe your finger across your Fire-Nook-Pad and feel the digital whoosh of information beneath your palm, sex books can inspire and arouse, planting seeds for future plans which may be next year or next time you need to escape a crushing holiday party.
There's no rhyme or reason to what I read throughout the year. If I...

Physical Barriers to Sexual Expression
This blog post is part of a series of posts about barriers to sexual expression and disability. If you want to read the others you can follow these links (part one, part two, part three, part four).
It was an intentional decision on my part to end this series on barriers to sexual expression by talking about physical barriers to being sexual. I left it to the end for a few reasons:
One reason is probably a bad one. That is, if you're looking for resources on sex and disability most of...

Black Friday Sex Toy Sales 2011

It's hard to get excited or be too casual about sales this week when there's news of major retailers forcing staff to begin working as early as 9 pm on Thursday night, and when we can expect to hear about customers or workers being hurt or killed in the rush to get a $5 flat screen television.
But I believe there are ways to do capitalism with some ethics, and there are many small businesses that try to make money AND minimize the negative impact on others. The sex shops below, most of...

The Wrong Kind of Grateful
This blog post is part of a series of articles and posts about barriers to sexual expression and disability. If you want to read the others you can follow these links (part one, part two, part three).
In March of this year the New York Times began a series Abused and Used which chronicles abuses and violence in state run institutions where people with disabilities are segregated and subjected to what for many amounts to imprisonment. It's important reporting and the Times is making a...

Sovereign Erotics: A Collection of Two-Spirit Literature

In the introduction to their new anthology of two-spirit literature, editors Qwo-Li Driskill, Daniel Heath Justice, Deborah Miranda, and Lisa Tatonetti offer the reader some context for the work that is presented in the collection as well as the deeply personal and political experiences and identities much of the work represents. Writing about labels, they explain two-spirit this way:
"In brief, 'two-spirt' or 'two-spirited' is an umbrella term in English that (1) refers to the gender...

Thinking and Remembering Violence
This week many of us across the country and around the world are taking some intentional time to remember the lives and mark the violent deaths of strangers, friends, and family who have been murdered. It's the 13th Annual International Transgender Day of Remembrance. Because trans folks are part of my family and community I may think about issues of gender and violence more than people whose lives aren't so explicitly oriented toward gender presentation. Being gender variant myself is...
New Study: Too Many Pills, Not Enough Erections
One of the most common associations people have when they think of erectile dysfunction is that little blue pill. This isn't an accident. It was the manufacturers of drugs like Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis who poured tens of millions of dollars into advertising and 'public awareness' campaigns about erectile dysfunction that got ED on the map and made it an (almost) acceptable topic for public discussion.
But pills aren't always the solution to problems of ED, and a new study from...

Positive Sexual Representations of Disability
This blog post is part of a series of articles and posts about barriers to sexual expression and disability. If you want to read the others you can follow these links (part one, part two).
The idea of a barrier usually evokes an image of a large immoveable object. Something that is heavy and substantial and in the way. Some barriers are like that. But often those ones are the easiest to deal with because they can be so immediately identified and named. After all, they are right there, ...
