International Disability Day
Actually the official UN name for it is International Day of Persons with Disabilities and this year the theme is "removing barriers to create an inclusive and accessible society for all". It's a good theme, it's a great theme. It's also a kind of lifetimes work to even imagine what a society for all would really look like and feel like.
I think a good place to start is to try and understand that disability isn't just something that happens to a body. Breaking your neck, getting blown up and...

What Are You Doing Today?
In 2005 a friend of mine published a book based on her years of covering HIV/AIDS across the African continent. The book had a big fancy publisher, was translated into many languages, and my friend went on a whirlwind tour to promote it. I remember talking to her about the tour and her telling me that in some countries the book got almost no attention. The publicist explained that editors felt that HIV/AIDS was played out as a media story. That people were tired of hearing about it.
HIV fatig...

Sex Toy Review: Imitation Is the Sincerest Form of Flattery

I don't think the cleric and art collector Charles Caleb Colton, who is probably most famous for the above quote, would have thought much of sex toys. Skimming some of the other things he wrote leads one to imagine that he didn't think much of pleasures of the flesh.
But if one agrees with his premise, then looking at the world of sex toys, one would have to surmise that other than the Rabbit Pearl, the Hitachi Magic Wand is among the most flattered sex toys in the world. It's position as th...

Sex Toy Review: Shaking Like a Leaf on a Tree

I'm not sure the Canadian sex toy distributor-turned manufacturer BMS Enterprises was thinking of Van Morrison's Cyprus Avenue when they came up with the designs for their line of silicone vibrators, the Leaf Line, but it was the first thing I thought of when I opened a box from the sex toy gardeners at Babeland placed the Leaf Life Vibe (buy direct) in my hand and felt it shake just like a leaf on a tree.
I was surprised to like the toy so much, since it comes from a company best known for...

What I LOVE About Being QUEER: The Interview

Queer is a slippery word. It's a word that hurts. Both verbally when it's spoken and physically, when it's being shouted during violent attacks. But it's also a word that has come to feel sexy and solid and proud; a word that helps people find a place and make a home with others who long after so-called gay liberation were still left in what felt like an invisible middle space. Queer is a word that is very very hard to define.
So how do you explain to people who think queer is only a bad word...

Sex Toy Review: Make Me Over

Sex toy manufacturers have been experimenting with celebrity endorsed or inspired sex toys for a while now. It may have all started with Doc Johnson and the Realistic Jeff Stryker dildo, which was touted as an exact replica of porn star Jeff Stryker's penis (complete with a scrotum that has testicles that moved around inside when you squeezed them). When I worked in a sex store in the late 80s and early 90s we couldn't keep them in stock, despite ordering hundreds at a time.
More recently th...

Sex When the Kids Leave Home
Recently I got an email from a reader who, for the first time in her life, was going to be alone with her husband in their home. No kids. She had children from a previous marriage and after twenty-four years of a full house, the last one was moving out.
The first thing her and her husband planned to do was change the outside locks. Not that they wanted to bar their children from returning, but the idea that they could walk around the house naked whenever they wanted and not have to worry abou...

Sex in a Disaster
I'm currently living in the north east, splitting my time between a city that wasn't at all affected by Sandy and a city that was. My apartment was not damaged by the recent storm but many of my neighbors, some only five blocks away, have lost their homes and all of their possessions. There are many still without power and without water. There are folks who are running out of medication, out of patience, out of nerves.
I had planned on using the free time I have over the next two...

Nothing to Sneeze At
According to a press release, Trimel, a Canadian pharmaceutical company, is moving forward with clinical trials on Tefina, a proposed treatment for female anorgasmia . The testosterone-based treatment is delivered nasally, as "a bioadhesive 'no touch' intranasal low-dose gel formulation of testosterone."
I read about this through the New View Campaign, which reminds folks that this is only the most recent in a series of drugs taken too quickly through trials to the FDA, only to be turned back...
