My Visit to Biloxi

To prepare for my next Mystery House novel, Summer House Mystery, I went with my sister to Biloxi, Mississippi to research the area, where the novel will take place.

First, we visited the iconic lighthouse, which was erected in Biloxi in 1848.

The lighthouse is situated on the median dividing Beach Boulevard, directly across from Biloxi Beach.

Biloxi Beach is known for more than this iconic lighthouse, however. It's also the place where many people believe the Civil Rights Movement began.

My sister and I spent several hours enjoying the beach with other tourists and a handful of locals.

We explored the Visitors' Center and the palacial homes down the street from it.

The Visitors' Center, which housed a museum, small theater, and gift shop, had the same architectural style as most of the beautiful homes along Beach Boulevard.

I chose the house above and its location (across from the beach and next to where the Dantzler House once stood) for the Air B and B that Ellen, Tanya, and Sue will visit during their summer trip to Biloxi. The Dantzler House was another historic home that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

That evening, we ate at Mary Mahoney's Old French House, where we learned about their resident ghost, Angelique Fayard, from the restaurant owner, Bob Mahoney. While he wasn't sure who Angelique was, I looked her up and discovered that she was one of the founders of Biloxi!

While Bob told us about how his mother, Mary, started the restaurant, a cardinal appeared on a balcony rail in the courtyard. Bob felt sure it was his mother.

One of the waiters told me that upstairs in the attic, there's a painting that changes. After our meal, I went up there (it was dark, but no one stopped me from snooping around). I took a few photos, and while none of the paintings changed on me, I did capture a strange face in one of the photos I took of a closet. Do you see it, too?

A book I bought at the giftshop by a paranormal investigator claimed that sometimes in the ladies' room, a face other than your own looks back at you from the mirror. I went to the bathroom to check it out, and while I did get a creepy vibe, I saw only my own face in the mirror.

That night, we went to play the slots at the Beau Rivage. Although I didn't hit the jackpot, Hera, Queen of Olympus, helped me to win back all the money I had lost along with an extra ten bucks.

The next morning, we visited the Beauvoir, the house of Jefferson Davis. Although I found the architecture and gardens beautiful, I felt a little ill around all the Confederate memorabilia.

I understand the desire to preserve history and honor the fallen, but I felt uneasy, though I hid it well as I sat on this rocker gazing at the gulf across the street.

Maybe the ghosts knew I was a Union sympathizer, despite my southern upbringing!

From the Beauvoir, we lunched at the Hard Rock Cafe.

And then I got a manicure and pedicure at the Bellissimo Spa at the Harrah Casino for my birthday.

Then, that night, we went to the Old Biloxi Cemetery to conduct a paranormal investigation. You can listen to our conversation with the ghosts here.

I can't wait to write the book!

Eight Days of Easter Eggs

It's almost time for my annual Eight Days of Easter Eggs Giveaways! Join me in the Pohler Bear Lounge on Facebook where, beginning April 2nd (my birthday!), I'll be posting giveaways that will remain open until Easter Monday. Then, that night (on April 10th), I'll announce the winners and host more games in a live ZOOM party here.

Here's a sneak peek at what I'll be giving away.

I just love how beautiful this omnibus is. I've been in love with this cover since day one. It was designed by a Polish artist. I don't think I've ever change it! You can find this omnibus for sale in my store here.

I'm in love with this dragon journal. You can find them for sale in my store here.

The Hidden Tunnel seems to be the favorite in The Mystery House Series. You can order a signed paperback copy from my store here.

I just love these Library Stack Earrings and ordered myself a pair. You can find them for sale in my store here.

The paperback omnibuses for The Underworld Saga also turned out beautifully. These, along with the majority of my young adult fantasy book covers, were designed by an artist from Romania--Gabriela of B. Rose Designz. You can purchase a signed copy from me here.

I just had to include a pair of these Pohler Bear socks. They're so cute, soft, and fluffy. You can find them in my store here.

Many of you caught the 99-cent digital sale of this series recently. Wouldn't it be nice to have it in one paperback omnibus? You can order a signed copy from me here.

One of my favorite new items in my bookish line of products is this Ghoul's Hand Bookmark. My first supplier is no longer carrying it, and the second supplier significantly raised the price on me, so I had to temporarily remove it from the store (No way I'm charging $24 for a bookmark!). But I've found another supplier and will soon be adding it back. Meanwhile, you can check out my other bookish products here.

If you're not on Facebook but would still like to join the fun, come to the ZOOM party on Monday the tenth at 7PM CST. There will be more chances to win! Plus, you can ask me anything!

I hope to see you there!

A Paranormal Investigation at the Haunted Magnolia Hotel

I had the opportunity to join reader and paranormal investigator Janet Roller, along with my daughter Candace, on a trip to the Haunted Magnolia Hotel in Sequin, Texas.

This hotel has been featured on many news channels and in newspapers and magazines because people have reported interesting paranormal experiences while staying there. In fact, this was Janet's fifth visit back to the hotel in her twelve-year career as an investigator.

Janet, Candace, and I stayed in the restored two-bedroom suite on the second floor. The living room, kitchen, two bedrooms, and bath were beautifully done.

We found pieces of history by way of news articles framed on the walls of nearly every room.

And the kitchen was outfitted with some beautiful pieces of antique dishes.

Candace and I stayed in this room with the king bed, known as Jane Doe's Room, where the orb of an unknown spirit has been caught on camera.

And Janet stayed in the room with the double bed, known as Amelia's Room, because the spirit of a woman named Amelia has been captured in digital photography in that room.

There was a door between our suite and the unrestored side of the hotel. As hotel guests, we were permitted to investigate that side of the hotel and had the place to ourselves--or so, we thought.

As we walked through the unrestored kitchen and other rooms, we definitely caught vibes. I wouldn't call them eerie. I felt welcomed by the spirits that seemed to be lingering there.

Perhaps we were welcomed because we befriended the spirits and offered to pray for them. We said a special prayer for the soul of Willie, who died in this bathroom after a botched abortion.

The room above was called the Prisoners Room because the parents of prisoners who were about to be hanged often stayed in this room, across from the hanging tree. We prayed for the parents and for the sons and hoped they found peace.

The dress above hung in the closet of the Prisoners Room. The dress below was in Rosebud's Room.

Rosebud was the name of a madam who lived in this room.

We prayed for her, and we think she spoke to us during a session with the ghost box. She said she was called "Love." I promised her I would name a character after her in my next book.

From Rosebud's Room, you come to Itsy's Room. Itsy is the nickname for a three-year-old daughter of a single mother. The little girl died of Yellow Fever while her mother was at work. We heard Itsy's name over the ghost box a LOT while we were there.

Janet put a teddy bear and a REM POD on Itsy's bed. Later, Candace asked, "Itsy, can I come into your room?" And the REM POD lit up, which Candace took as a yes! (The REM POD did not go off but maybe one other time.)

After you passed through the Prisoners Room, Rosebud's Room, and Itsy's Room, you walked by another bathroom and eating area that led to Sam Wood's room (I didn't get a photo of it). He was a slave who stayed there. His name came up on the ghost box a lot, too. After Sam's room, past another kitchen, was the Murderer's Room.

The murderer killed a girl named Emma in New Braunfels during an attempted robbery and returned to his room at the Magnolia Hotel the same night. He got away with it! Emma's stepfather was falsely accused and hung for it. The real murderer confessed to his crime on his deathbed. We believe we spoke to him through the ghost box, too. He said he did not regret his crime! The ax pictured below is a trigger object resembling the one he used to kill Emma.

We told him we weren't there to judge but to pray for his peace.

We did most of our investigating in the parlor, because there were chairs where we could sit while we were investigating.

Janet put a cat ball on the coffee table and the card table. They didn't light up when we asked the ghosts to touch them except for one time, and I caught it on video! I wish I could show you, but the hotel owners ask that no video of their home be posted.

However, I can share an audio recording with you. Janet caught two EVP's (electronic voice phenomena) with her recorder. If you listen VERY carefully, you will here a soft "no" after Candace asks, "Can you knock on the wall?" The very soft no is VERY audible when you wear headphones, but you can hear it without if you listen closely at the 0.14 second mark.

Then later, at the end of this two-minute excerpt, I ask, "Are you happy here?" and you hear the faintest "yes" around the 1.58 mark. You can really hear with headphones.

Click here to listen to the EVP's!

We conducted several investigations throughout our three-day stay, both in the daytime and at night. One name that came up a LOT on the ghost box was Eddie. We couldn't recall reading about an Eddie, but when we looked at the record of hotel owners, we discovered an Eddie Wahl who lived there with his in-laws in 1916.

We believe Sam, the slave, told us that his ankle hurt and that he needed help. We tried to conduct a cross-over ceremony for him, asking him to find peace. We believe he said, "Mom" and was reunited with his mother on the other side.

We also spoke with Itsy who asked for a doctor. When I asked, "Did a doctor help you?" we think she said, "Maybe not." She was the one who died of Yellow Fever.

If you're looking for an interesting and beautiful place to visit where you can commune with ghosts, I highly recommend the Haunted Magnolia Hotel in Sequin. I plan to use my experiences there for inspiration for my next Mystery House book.

Be Your Favorite Greek Deity

Hello, friends!

I'm back with another awesome Kickstarter project, and once again, I'm working with illustrator Arnild Adepolla!

How would you like to be your favorite Greek deity in our oracle and playing card decks?

We hope to produce two decks based on the gods, goddesses, heroes, and monsters of ancient Greece--one 54-card oracle deck and one 54-card playing card deck (the face of the cards will be the same in each deck). We have already written the guidebook (it still needs the illustrations), created the design for the backs of the decks, and illustrated the face of one card: Themis, based on an image of the author--me!

Be notified at launch by following my campaign here.

By pledging at our top tier of $150, you (or someone you love) can be portrayed as your favorite Greek god, goddess, hero, or monster in our oracle and playing card decks.

Our illustrator, Arnild Adepolla, will work from a digital photo that you provide and will draw your likeness into your choice of god, goddess, hero, or monster (see chart below for available characters). That illustration will be made into an oracle/tarot card and a playing card. So, you will be present in both decks (and in the guidebook and coloring book, too).

In addition, you'll receive the digital file containing the artwork (so you can print it on a poster, mug, t-shirt, or whatever you want--for personal use only), the 54-card oracle deck, the 54-card playing card deck, the illustrated guidebook, and a double deck box that will hold both decks and the book.

All Top Tier backers will also be listed in the back of the book, indicating which god, goddess, hero, or monster was illustrated in their likeness.

The choice of character you become will be on a first-come-first-served basis, so don't wait too long to make your pledge if you already have your heart set on being someone!

If you're more interested in using the decks than being illustrated in them, we've got you covered. Even though we'd love to have your beautiful face included in the deck, these cards are going to be something special, for they will be the faces of our Kickstarter community. Imagine the power of the ancient Greek gods combined with the energy from supportive backers in one powerful oracle deck. And this playing card deck with the ancient Greek pantheon will be one of a kind.

Our Double Decker Tier gets you both decks, the guidebook, and a box that will store all three.

The guidebook is a 4" x 6" glossy paperback with over a hundred pages of full-color illustrations and text. Here's a sneak peek of what's inside (only Themis has been illustrated, because we're waiting to create the others based on the images of backers like you):

If you're not into playing cards, we have a tier for you. The Oracle Plus Tier gets you the oracle deck, the guidebook, and a box to store them in.

Or, if you want to save a little money by forgoing the physical guidebook for a digital one, you can get the Oracle Tier--which includes the oracle deck and box.

If you're not into tarot and you just want the playing card deck, we've got a couple of options for you--one with a box (Playing Card Plus) and one with shrink wrapping (Playing Card Tier).

The Playing Card Tier (shrink-wrapped) is $25. Other tiers include a Daily Reading for $15 (we'll draw a card with you in mind and send it to you, along with a write up of the message) and a Digital Card $5 (your choice of any one card to print on whatever you'd like, for personal use only).

These are the 54 cards you'll find in both the oracle and playing card decks.

The backs of the oracle cards will look like this (we aren't sure whether they'll be round or square edged):

The backs of the playing deck will look like this (we aren't sure whether they'll be round or square edged):

The oracle cards will be turned into suits of hearts, clubs, diamonds, and spades like this:

The guidebook will be a 4" x 6" glossy paperback with full-color illustrations and text and over 100 pages. It's already been written (see the sneak peek above). We just need to add the custom illustrations.

You can also get a 6" x 9" hardback version of the guidebook and an 8.5" x 11" coloring book version of the guidebook as add-ons.

Additional add-ons include the inspiration behind the decks--The Underworld Saga, either as a digital box set, or as hardback volumes (one trilogy per volume).

Arnild Aldepolla is a Philippine based artist who works mainly in digital art. He holds a Bachelor degree in Fine Arts in Visual Communication from PWC (Philippine Women's College).

He works with authors and is known for turning a series into a coloring book. He has also illustrated several picture books and has created companion character cards for authors.

Arnild is a member of the Dragon Realm Press as the illustrator. You can find him at Instagram @BooksandFunArts.

Here is a sampling of Arnild's work:

Those of you who follow me know that I'm a USA Today bestselling author of over thirty-five novels in multiple genres, including supernatural mysteries, thrillers, and young adult fantasy based on Greek mythology. I live in San Antonio, Texas with my husband of thirty years, two of our three adult children, and three rescue dogs.

I want to share something with you that I wrote in a previous post:

When I first began using tarot, I did not believe in their power to provide me with spiritual messages. I found them to be fun and entertaining. I eventually created my own deck to use as a tool to teach others about the gods, goddesses, and heroes of ancient Greece--characters that people my young adult fantasy novels. The cards served as flashcards and tarot, depending on the context.

I used them at book events to attract the attention of browsers by saying, "Would you like to hear a message from the gods of ancient Greece?" Most people would stop and say yes.

The more I used them, the more I came to believe in their power. There were too many superbly meaningful moments for them to be a "coincidence." It's uncanny how the right message is delivered at the right moment to strangers I know nothing about. Let me give you some examples.

Not long ago, I was selling my books at the Super Hero Car Show and Comic Con in San Antonio, when a young man in his twenties asked for a reading. He wanted to know if his current relationship was headed in the right direction. After I shuffled the cards, he chose Pontus, the embodiment of the sea, who represents the unknown. I told him the deck was refusing to answer about the relationship's outcome, but if he took a leap of faith and jumped into the sea, he would ride a thrilling wave that would eventually lead to land. The journey was more important than the outcome.

Intrigued, he asked to see the deck. A fan of Greek myth, he enjoyed looking over my homemade cards. When I asked him if he had a favorite, he said, "Hephaestus, but he doesn't like me."

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"He's the god of work, and I'm struggling with what to do about my career."

"Then ask the deck another question," I said. "Let's see what the cards have to say."

As I shuffled, he asked, "Should I stick with what I'm studying, or should I follow a new path that has stolen my heart?"

I cut the cards and fanned them out. I held two partial decks that together made nearly a hundred cards with no more than two alike in the deck. Out of all those cards guess which one he drew?

That's right. Hephaestus.

"I thought you said he didn't like you," I teased. "He's telling you to follow your heart. If you can make your passion your job, you'll never work a day in your life."

"Wow," he said as goosebumps crawled across his arms. "That's incredible."

I had chills, too.

And that's just one of dozens of similar stories I've experienced.

Like the woman who chose Chiron, the centaur, who represents healing. To her, I said, "You will soon be facilitating someone's healing, and it may be part of your own healing process."

Tears filled her eyes. "I'm on my way to give a talk on living with PTSD."

Then there was the man in his fifties who asked if the woman he'd been talking to online for three years was right for him. They still hadn't met in person, and he hoped he hadn't been wasting his time on something that would never be. After I shuffled, he drew Psyche, who represents sacred unions.

Of all the cards he could have chosen? Really?

"According to this deck, she's your soulmate," I said.

He broke into tears. "No one has ever understood me, the real me, like she does. I don't care what she looks like. I love her and want to meet her."

Then there was the police officer who saw my Medusa banner at another signing, and he came up to show me his Medusa tattoo.

"That's my daughter's face," he said of the tattoo.

"It's beautiful," I said. "Would you like a reading?"

"You bet."

Guess which card he drew?

This was a single deck of 70 cards with only one of each card in the deck. Out of all those cards he drew Medusa.

He couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe it.

"Medusa usually has something to do with forgiveness," I said. "Usually it means you have to let go of something, or your heart will turn to stone. But in this case, I think it has something to do with your daughter."

Tears filled his eyes. "I know exactly what it means, and my mind is blown."

"Mine, too," I said. And it was.

Although my fledgling homemade deck served a purpose, I've wanted to create a professional-grade deck for many years. So, Arnild, who has worked with me on other projects, has teamed up with me once again.

The cards for this Kickstarter project will be unlike any others in that they will be created in the images of people who support the production of the deck. I feel this lends an extra layer of power to the cards, because we have two paths into the universal unconsciousness—one through the ancient pantheon and another through the patrons whose energy is present in their images on the cards.

Each card in the deck bears a message. Although I describe them in the guidebook, you can understand a single card in isolation, or you can put several in conversation with one another. Choosing one card will give you a daily reading—a message that should guide you throughout your day. Creating a three-card spread will allow you to see where you’re at (first card) and what you need to do (second card) to get to where you’re going (third card).

You can also lay out six cards to better understand what chapter you’re currently experiencing in your life. Refer to the diagram below.

As you become more familiar with the beings represented in this deck, you will forge your own relationships with them and may no longer need my guidebook.

I hope you will consider backing this project, so we can bring a powerful deck of oracle cards and a beautiful deck of playing cards into being.

A Life-Saving Box Set

When my kids were little, my husband and I began a family tradition of doing something charitable each year over the holidays. It was easy when I was their cub master and girl scout leader, because opportunities for dens, packs, and troops to sing carols at the nursing home, collect canned goods for the food bank, or solicit clothing donations for Goodwill were abundant.

Here in San Antonio, we have a tradition known as Elf Louise, where dozens of families volunteer to dress as Santa, Mrs. Claus, and elves to deliver wrapped presents to other families who aren't as privileged. I have wonderful memories of participating when my children were younger.

Now that my kids are grown, I seem to have forgotten to do anything these past few years. But just last week, I received an invitation to participate in a charitable box set to raise money for a young woman who needs life-saving surgery.

If you're looking for something charitable to do over the holidays, please consider purchasing this set for $2.99.

Ashley Burlingame is a young wife and mom of two fighting for her life. She is in desperate need of a life-saving surgery, but the medical team won’t move ahead until the family has raised the funds to cover the procedure. We’re doing what we can to help them get there.

This anthology includes sixteen books handpicked by the authors—our favorites of the books we’ve written. You’ll enjoy hours of reading pleasure while you help Ashley move a little closer to getting the care she must have.

Get your copy of the book here:

AND please consider donating directly to Ashley’s GoFundMe, too. It’s right here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-ashley-with-her-medical-expenses-recovery

I hope you and yours have a very happy holiday season!
