Eight Days of Easter Egg Giveaways!

It's time for my annual Eight Days of Easter Egg Giveaways! During the week leading up to Easter, I'll be giving away one Easter Egg per day in the Pohler Bear Lounge.

The Pohler Bear Lounge is my private reader group on Facebook. Here are some of the things we do in there:

Birthday Giveaway Each Month: On the first of the month, I create a Happy Birthday post and ask the readers born that month to comment for a chance to win an ebook or audiobook of their choice, along with a personal tarot reading (if they want it--not everyone is into tarot). Seasonal Giveaways: My annual seasonal giveaways include Countdown to Valentine's, Eight Days of Easter Egg Giveaways, July Fourth Giveaway, Fright and Delight Giveaway, 12 Days of Christmas Giveaways, and Countdown to New Year's Giveaway. First Look: The readers in the lounge always see everything first--cover reveals, teasers, sales, etc. Book Club: Week-long read-alongs and discussions. Polls: I go to the lounge for feedback on everything from cover choices to book setting. It's a chance for my readers to weigh in!

My Eight Days of Easter Egg Giveaways will begin on Sunday, March 24th and will end on Monday, April 1st.

Each day, I'll ask readers to enter a giveaway with a "getting to know you" question, such as "What is your current read?"

The giveaways will stay open until the morning of Easter Monday, so that readers can enter at their convenience.

I'll announce the winners of the giveaways in a 20-minute live video in the lounge on Monday, April 1st at 4PM CST. The video can be watched later for those who can't be there live.

Here's a sneak peek at what I'll be giving away during my Eight Days of Easter Egg Giveaways:

A pink t-shirt that says,

This fun, bookish t-shirt comes in sizes small to 4X.

A paperback copy of Charon's Quest.

Since everyone got the ebook version for free in my Underworld Bonus Boxset promotion, we're doing book club reading of this in the lounge this week (March 18th through March 22). I thought a signed copy would be a fun thing to give away on the heels of that book club.

White mug with purple designs and text that reads,

This bookish mug has spring vibes, making it perfect for an Easter giveaway.

Earrings with images of books.

These Library Books Fun Earrings are a popular item in my store.

A straw woven tote.

This handmade straw woven tote is a new item in my store. I can't wait to get mine. I LOVE totes.

An ebook and paperback copy of The Haunted Bridge.

The Haunted Bridge is the newest release in my Mystery House Series. I'm giving an ebook and signed paperback copy away.

This Book Reading Foldable Pillow Stand is another popular item in my store. I love a handsfree reading experience. Don't you?

Why You Should Read in Multiple Genres

People often ask me what my favorite genre is. The plain truth is that I don't have one. I have always felt that cultivating a varied repertoire of books provided me with a more enjoyable literary experience. While it's easy to find comfort in familiar genres, there are some great benefits to be had from branching out and delving into different literary realms. Here are four:

A woman lies on the grass reading an iPad.1. Reading Multiple Genres Broadens Horizons and Perspectives

One of the most significant advantages of reading multiple genres of fiction is the opportunity to broaden your horizons and perspectives. Each genre offers a distinct lens through which to view the world, presenting different themes, settings, and characters. By exploring diverse genres, readers can gain insights into various cultures, historical periods, and societal issues, fostering empathy and understanding for experiences beyond their own.

For example, delving into historical fiction--such as Philippa Gregory's The Other Boleyn Girl-- transports readers to different eras, allowing them to immerse themselves in the challenges and triumphs of bygone times. On the other hand, science fiction and fantasy--books like James Cameron's Avatar and J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter--offer imaginative landscapes and speculative futures that challenge conventional thinking and expand the boundaries of what is possible.

The book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.2. Reading Multiple Genres Develops Versatility and Flexibility

Reading multiple genres of fiction also nurtures versatility and flexibility in readers' literary tastes and preferences. Just as a diverse diet contributes to better health, consuming a variety of genres enriches the mind and stimulates intellectual growth. Switching between genres keeps the reading experience fresh and engaging, preventing monotony and stagnation.

Moreover, exposure to different writing styles, narrative structures, and storytelling techniques enhances readers' analytical and critical thinking skills. As readers navigate through genres ranging from literary fiction to romance, mystery, thriller, and beyond, they learn to discern nuances in plot development, character dynamics, and thematic depth, honing their ability to appreciate and evaluate diverse literary works.

3. Reading Multiple Genres Stimulates Imagination and Creativity

Another compelling benefit of reading multiple genres of fiction is the stimulation of imagination and creativity. Each genre offers a unique palette of imagery, themes, and concepts that ignite the imagination and transport readers to new realms of possibility. Whether exploring the whimsical landscapes of fairy tales, like Marissa Meyer's Cinder, or unraveling the intricacies of psychological thrillers, like Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl, fiction provides an endless reservoir of inspiration for creative endeavors.

Moreover, exposure to diverse genres exposes readers to different narrative structures and storytelling conventions, sparking innovative ideas and approaches to writing. By drawing inspiration from a variety of sources, writers can infuse their own work with fresh perspectives and originality, enriching the literary landscape with their unique voices and visions.

The book Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.4. Reading Multiple Genres Cleanses the Palate

There is value in the practice of "cleansing the palate" by switching from one genre to another. Much like savoring a refreshing sorbet between courses to cleanse the palate and prepare for the next flavor, transitioning between genres rejuvenates the reading experience and prevents fatigue or burnout.

Genre switching offers readers the opportunity to recalibrate their reading preferences, explore new territories, and rediscover the joy of storytelling from different perspectives. After immersing in the intensity of a psychological thriller, for example, transitioning to the whimsy of a cozy mystery or the poignant lyricism of literary fiction provides a welcome change of pace, rejuvenating the mind and reigniting passion for reading.

You might be surprised to learn that many of your favorite authors write in multiple genres. Most use pen names to avoid diluting their "brand." Unlike most, I write in three different genres under one name--my real name, Eva Pohler. These genres include paranormal mysteries, thrillers, and young adult fantasy based on Greek mythology. I and many of my author friends like to genre switch to cleanse the palate so that we come to each new project with a refreshed perspective.

I challenge you to try reading outside of your comfort zone by selecting a book in a genre you don't usually read. I humbly submit these options for your consideration:

The first ten books of The Mystery House Series in paperback. The three books in The Nightmare Collection in paperback. The ten books in The Underworld Saga in paperback.

I used to feel bad when I'd give my answer to whoever was asking about my favorite genre, as if I'd somehow let them down, like when someone who loves sports asks who's your favorite team. Over the years, however, my perspective has changed. I'm now proud to be a multi-genre bibliophile. And I've been pleased to see fellow readers striking out and referring to themselves as "mood readers," letting the world know that we don't have to be put in a box and labeled a certain way as book lovers.

Athena in ebook, paperback, and hardback.Excerpt

Chapter One: Escape

Warm blood cradled her, though it would be many days before she would have the words to comprehend it.

I am inside my mother’s womb.

It was cozy, warm, and soft. She stretched her arms, turned, and closed her eyes, but before she had

fallen back to sleep with her knees pressed against her cheeks, a deep voice rang out in a threatening roar.

Her mother’s voice, calm and quiet, followed. “I will not destroy the babe.”

“Metis, you must, if you love me.”

That was her mother’s name—Metis.

“I will not.”

A pressure disturbed her cradle, followed by sudden jerks of movement and her mother’s wail. She

clenched her tiny fists and uncoiled herself, ready to spring into action. She flattened her feet against her mother’s backbone.

Her mother’s screams unnerved her. For many hours, she listened to the distressing sounds and felt

her mother flailing against her prison.

“Let me out of here!” Metis cried repeatedly.

Once her mother’s cries had subsided and all had gone still, she put her hand against her mother’s

belly. It was warm and firm. “Mother? Are you well?”

Her mother flinched with surprise.

“Mother? Metis?”

Warm hands pressed the belly from the other side. “I am here, child. All is well.”

The sound of something scratching woke her from her slumber. She stretched her tiny fists. “Mother?

What are you doing?”

“Tearing splinters from your father’s ribs.”

Her eyes opened wide, warm fluid coating them. “Why? How?”

“Your father, Zeus, is the king of the Olympians. He swallowed me because of a prophecy that I

would give him a son who would one day unseat him.”

“I am not a son. I am a daughter, I believe.”

“Yes, I believe it, too. My only concern now is setting you free. I shall weave armor for you from

these splinters and find a way to get you out.”

“I like it here.”

“For now,” her mother said. “But you are growing, and soon there will be little room. You will

become restless and bored, and you will long for something more than this. I must prepare for that day.”

“Mother?”

“Yes?”

“I like my name. Thank you for it.”

“You are welcome, my precious child. And now, I want to exercise your mind with a riddle.”

Athena smiled, ready for the challenge.

Her mother began, “Imagine that your father gifts me with a beautiful pear tree. If the main trunk

has twenty-four branches, and each branch has twelve boughs, and each bough has six twigs, and each twig bears one piece of fruit, how many plums can the tree produce in one growing season?”

Athena put her finger in her mouth. After a moment, she removed the finger and said, “The tree can

bear 1,728 pieces of fruit.”

Metis pressed her hands against her belly. “How wise of you to put it that way, since a pear tree

would produce zero plums.”

“I thought you may have misspoken,” Athena explained.

“It was a trick. If you had said that the tree would produce 1,728 plums, you would have been wrong,

because pear trees cannot produce plums, but because you said, ‘pieces of fruit,’ you bested me, the goddess of counsel!”

Despite the many riddles her mother told her to pass the time, Athena soon outgrew her cradle and felt

suffocated by it.

“Let me out of here,” she said one day.

“You must find your own way out. I will help as much as I can.”

Athena searched for an opening and found one. Her mother bore down as Athena squeezed through,

first her head and then the rest of her. When she was free at last, she found herself in another cradle not much bigger than the one she had left, made smaller by the presence of her mother.

Metis embraced her. “Well done, my precious child. When you are stronger, you must do that again.”

“Will you follow me?” Athena asked, still wrapped in her mother’s arms. She pressed her ear against

her mother’s bosom and was comforted by the sound of her beating heart.

“It is not my destiny. It is yours.”

Athena’s stomach formed a knot, and tears pooled in her eyes. She would never leave her mother.
