Eden by Janelle Stalder

Eden by Janelle Stalder

Eden by Janelle Stalder

Rating: 3 1/2 stars

*** 1/2

Summary: (BY THE AUTHOR) Trapped within the cruel world of hormones and bullies, fifteen-year-old Aiden is convinced life has more to offer him. His instincts are proven correct on the night he is awakened by a voice calling to him from outside his window. As he sleepily peers into his yard, his eyes slowly focus on a woman who says she is there to take him to Eden. Aiden is about to fulfill the life purpose he never knew he had.

It is in Eden, a land on the brink of war, where Aiden will finally learn to trust himself and those around him. Accompanied by Wolf, his sidekick Logan, and the beautiful archer, Elisa, Aiden is soon thrust into a battle to save Eden. Meanwhile Elisa, the only girl in the King's Army, is in the midst of her own struggles. Betrothed to a man she has no intention of marrying, Elisa is caught between the need to prove herself and her desire for true happiness. And now that she has met Aiden, she is more confused than ever.

In this action-packed fantasy tale, romance, adventure, and intrigue surround Aiden as he learns just what he is capable of when he discovers confidence and courage.

Things I loved: Great character development! There are multiple characters that you can really connect with and feel part of. It was also amazing to see how the author could weave together so many characters lives. it was really believable how their lives intertwined, and didn't feel made up just to make a story. In that way, the book felt so real even though it was paranormal. kudos. There was so much detail in this book that the characters really came alive. At some points I felt like I was on my edge of the seat waiting for the outcome!

That being said...
(and I say this with love)
SPOILER (sort of)

I had a hard time liking some of the characters at first because they were really immoral. I was hoping that it would be somewhat resolved at the end of the book, because the author hinted at it and it was a big deal for some of the other characters, but nothing got fixed. I get the whole sequel thing, but I as a reader need some things resolved to feel happy at the end of the book.
Also, some parts of the characters, even though they were so well developed, had some missing parts (like Aiden being OBSESSED with Melissa in his world, but not even thinking about her in the next- it was a huge disconnect for me and didn't do much for the character. I wish it would have just been left out). Also, the author did SUCH A GOOD JOB at building tension for the war, and then it was so short! so anticlimatic. I was bummed. I wanted to see Aiden kick the crap out of everybody! I wanted the emotion of the characters that was building during the whole book, and I felt let down. Which was depressing since I had a hard time getting through the first chapters, but I pressed on so I could read a great ending! but alas, tis so difficult to have a good ending. (that's why there are sequels?)

All in all, I think this author is SUPER talented but a few aspects of the book could have been refined. I loved the style of writing and the intricate details woven together. But if you're going to be that talented and connect me to characters emotionally (even immoral ones! good job), I need some resolve at the end. I feel like a book this detailed and awesome could be longer. I guess I'll just have to read the sequel! hmmmm...I'm starting to see the genius behind the author's plotting...

Also, I loved the review by author of The Y Logs

HAPPY READING! :)

Movie Mondays! (a little late)

Skyfall (2012) Poster

Skyfall: 007
Review by Amber Hooper

Rating: **** 4/5 stars!

Movie gets 7.9 rating on IMDB

Great movie! I give it 4 stars, which is saying a lot, because I'm a girl. Usually James Bond movies are a little too gruesome for me, but this one had action, fantastic acting and . . . wait for it . . . PLOT! I know that's pretty unusual for 007, but I really enjoyed it. I would say my husband probably thought it needed a little more blood and a little less story, but hey, this was the perfect blend of a movie we can watch together! No heads rolled across the ground like on Gladiator, although a girl does get shot and killed. Silly girl. Everyone knows if you sleep with the oh so dashing agent double o seven, you get shot. *sigh*

Overall, I would watch this again, so it's a good thing I bought it for my husband for Valentine's day. That's right- I'm the coolest wife ever! Romantic evenings have been abolished since our awesome little baby came along! Good thing they're making great movies like Skyfall to keep us entertained :)

Book Review: Foreseen

Product Details  ForeseenBy Terri-Lynne Smiles
Summary:What if you could change the thoughts of others?

Untraceable control.

The Rothston Institute can manipulate the choices of anyone in the world: you, senators, anyone. Fortunately, it has the self-discipline to use this power to keep humankind safe. Stopping wars, averting crises, advancing peace.

Unfettered power.

To accomplish these feats, their operatives must train, and college student Kinzie Nicolosi has just become one of them. A student missing an exam? A construction worker fired for an industrial accident? A Congressman ruined in scandal? Necessary consequences of honing their skills for the greater good.

Unintended victims.

But Kinzie brings more than her remarkable skills to Rothston. She bears an unexpected power that rivals Rothston's own. And when she stumbles onto the real intentions of Rothston's leaders, the clash may be something none of them can control.Rating:4/5 stars!Really Great Read- Highly RecommendedReview:Disclaimer: Just so this doesn't interfere with my review, I have to note that I didn't like the sexual tone of this book. It's not that most people would consider it bad, and nobody actually had sex in the book, but there were lots of crude references to sex. I'm a young adult, so I don't really like to read that type of thing. Plus, there was a lot- and I mean a lot- of bad language. The F word was probably in here like 25 times. But you know, it's more than what I like and don't like to read. I found the language and sexual connotations somewhat distracting to the story. It seemed to take away from the plot and seemed unnecessary. In the author's defense, this fits into the genre of sci-fi, but I think it's going to appeal to the generation who read and loved Harry Potter, and I don't think that's what those readers are looking for. I don't know- this is just my opinion. However, I am nervous to read the sequel because I'm not sure how far this author will go. I almost wish the author would edit and make an edition for a younger crowd. I think it would broaden her audience. Read the book and you'll understand.
Now, to the review!
I actually really really loved this book! I couldn't put it down! I felt like I was sixteen again, devouring books instead of hanging out with real people!
Something I really liked was that the relationships weren't predictable in this book, and I think that's because Terri-Lynne, the author, did a great job of creating a main character who wasn't predictable- mostly because Kinzie can't predict her own behavior. She's a character who learns, but not right away. We see her good and bad sides, almost to where you stop liking Kinzie. But don't worry, Terri-Lynne saves her bad character just in time. I actually thought she would end up with somebody totally different. Well, end up is the wrong word. But what am I saying, this isn't just a romance! So much happens in this book!
I almost felt like it was two books- one in the real world, and one at the Rothston Institute (or Academy- I can't remember which it was called). At first there was a disconnect between the worlds, but as you keep reading, the author really brings them together. Which was probably intentional. If not, kudos, Terri-Lynne.
When I first started reading, I thought this book was going to be about zombies (so glad it wasn't!). So that was a weird beginning, I think. Greg was one of my favorite characters, even though he was the epitome of a crude, sex-driven man. However, he was real, and he helps Kinzie develop, but not on purpose, like he's trying to changer her. They were just being real people. I love it when authors can create real characters in fiction. Real but still likable.
Overall, I thought the characters were very diverse and well developed. I only got bored during one part in the middle, when she first comes to Rothston, but I think it's just because they were changing worlds, as it were, and I wasn't in the mood to read the type of description that is usually at the beginning of the novel. I don't think it could have been helped, though. The end did fall flat a little for me- a little anti-climactic. But I don't think that was because of lack of plot. I think authors get tired by the end of their novels so their writing isn't as clear. At least, that's how it is for me. It's difficult to write action/fighting scenes, though, so I still think she did a really great job. Like I said, I couldn't put the book down! Which is a big pain since I am a slow reader. My husband was bored for three days :)
I really do recommend this book. Just read past the language and sexual parts and I think you'll find a really enjoyable book. You'll be turning the pages as fast as you can! In fact, if you want to buy it RIGHT NOW you can! But it here! Amazon Author Links:author's website

The Truth About Forever

[image error]  The Truth about ForeverBy Sarah Dessen Summary:

Macy's summer stretches before her, carefully planned and outlined. She will spend her days sitting at the library information desk. She will spend her evenings studying for the SATs. Spare time will be used to help her obsessive mother prepare for the big opening of the townhouse section of her luxury development. But Macy's plans don't anticipate a surprising and chaotic job with Wish Catering, a motley crew of new friends, or . . . Wes. Tattooed, artistic, anything-but-expected Wes. He doesn't fit Macy's life at all&150so why does she feel so comfortable with him? So . . . happy? What is it about him that makes her let down her guard and finally talk about how much she misses her father, who died before her eyes the year before?Sarah Dessen delivers a page-turning novel that carries readers on a roller coaster of denial, grief, comfort, and love as we watch a broken but resilient girl pick up the pieces of her life and fit them back together. The summer following her father's death, Macy plans to work at the library and wait for her brainy boyfriend to return from camp, but instead she goes to work at a catering business where she makes new friends and finally faces her grief.
Rating:   4- Really great read! Highly recommended.

Review:
My sister- in- law actually recommended I read this book, knowing I'm a huge romance buff. We don't usually agree on books, so I was skeptical. And she said she's not like most YA writers she's read. Plus, it's sort of a drama, which doesn't really appeal to me. So, near the beginning of chapter 2, Macy, the main character, meets this boy. And he's short, chubby, and has a red face. I start thinking, 'This isn't gonna work for me.' Just when I'm about to put the book down in disgust, a new character, Wes, enters the scene, and he's dashing, handsome, and has that 'I'm deeply troubled and so I'm mysterious' type of demeanor. Good timing, Sarah Dessen. Once the guy I was hoping Macy would get with (and hoping there wouldn't be some stupid love triangle between the ugly guy and the perfect guy) came into Macy's life, I was hooked. I'm a sucker for romance, so of course I was cheering Macy on the whole time. After a while, I found myself really connecting with Macy. She only does her hair to keep up appearances to hide her grief, not because she cares what she looks like, and when Wes is telling her about his current girlfriend, she instantly makes up (in her mind, of course) an identifier for the trollop who dares to date the guy she just met, as all females do (but not because we're jealous, silly). Her identifier: Becky. Becky the shoplifting pothead. I love it! Snide heroines are always my favorite. Wes is a great character, too. No, he's not perfect, but no, he's not realistic, either. That's one of Sarah Dessen's greatest writing qualities, I think. She creates characters who are not entirely perfect, so they're believable, but at the same time, they're perfect enough to draw you in. Who wants to read about a real live boy? There's a reason we read fiction. (Yes, it's fiction, people-who-complain-about-books/movies-not-being-realistic!) All in all, I really enoyed this book. The characters have so much depth and I found myself intrigued by all the quirky details present in each character, like Macy's dad's obsession with EZ products from infomercials. I only gave it a 4 out of 5 because I was slightly annoyed with Macy's character sometimes. I wanted to shout at her, 'Stop dating that stupid boy! And quit being so melodramatic!' But I suppose it's the same way that I get annoyed at myself for being a stupid girl, obsessing over boys and thinking my life is torturous sometimes. Hopefully I'm not as dumb or dramatic as Macy seemed sometimes, though. Other than that, I loved the storyline and the characters (especially the supporting characters). I definitely recommend this book! -Amber You can buy it here: barnes and nobleamazon Learn more about Sarah Dessin here! amazon author pagedessen's websiteGoodreads Enjoy!

Inspiration

I thought I might write about where I get inspiration, I guess you'd call it, for my books.

Even though I only have one book published, I have written a handful of others, most of which I hope eventually hit the shelves and some which I will never allow to see the light of day!

For A Penny's Worth, I actually thought up the basis of the design while I was tanning in a tanning bed. Go figure. I guess that's the only time I would ever relax, so I guess I get inspired while relaxing.

After I get the beginning of an idea, I like to talk it out. I usually choose my little sister for bouncing ideas. She's eighteen and full of good ideas. Plus, she's a young adult, so she's the perfect audience for my genre of writing.

I outline forever . . . and I mean forever!

I make pages and pages of outlines until the idea is eventually stuck in my head (and then I keep those pages handy in case I forget). My books are usually pretty detailed, and those details affect different parts of the book. Then I write.

I like to hash out my ideas and then revise over and over again.

The revising process usually draws me outside. It's peaceful in the woods, so I quite often wander around with the pages in my hand so I can think.

Surprisingly, I don't feel inspired with original ideas in the wilderness. Only while revising. Go figure. I guess I need the paper in front of me.

There's nothing I Like more than pages of a book. Old books are best. :)

Where do you find inspiration? For writing, creating, deciding, or anything!

January 19, 2013

yes, quickly

Hi, all!

When I first started blogging, I thought, Nothing interesting happens to me.

What the heck am I gonna blog about?!

So I decided to go with the book reviews, recipes, etc.

But then I realized, yesterday, in fact, that my stupidity makes me quite the target for entertaining stories. I'm pretty great in public, as far as being graceful goes. Yesterday was no different.

My mother- in- law is watching my brand new baby, so I decide that, on my way home from work, I'll stop by wal- mart to grab some things I'm out of. I'm in a hurry, of course, because I haven't seen my baby in over 7 hours.

Now you have to know something about me: I pride myself on moving quickly. In fact, when I was six months pregnant, I was in the hospital for pre- term labor and the nurse asked me to lay on the bed. I walked over to the bed (yes, quickly) and the nurse jumped back, startled. I jumped in response, and she said,

"Sorry, I'm just not used to pregnant women moving so quickly!"

So I walk fast. I don't know why. Perhaps because, when I was a kid, my big brother and I had to walk home from school together (in Las Vegas . . . where it's bloody hot . . . thanks, mom).

As it turns out, my legs are long, but his are longer. Plus I was one of those dumb smart students who brought all of her books home everyday to study.

Well, my brother wasn't the sentimental type. In fact, he was sort of a punk. He walked so fast, and if I asked him to slow down, he'd just walk faster (which seemed virtually impossible to me, considering his already hyperactive pace).

Being a little girl and living around Las Vegas, I wasn't about to be left alone on the long walk home. (No joke! It was at least a mile! I call child abuse!)

Needless to say, with beads of sweat dripping from my body and a fifty pound backpack dragging me farther and farther behind my brother, I learned to walk quickly.

That's one possibility.

But back to yesterday:

So I'm walking into wal- mart, and about six people follow me in. How often do that many people walk in at exactly the same time?

Then I meet my nemesis: the automatic sliding door .

I walk (yes, quickly) toward the entrance, and the door is supposed to slide open, right?

Wrong.

It opens part way, and then STOPS !

It STOPS ! It stops in my face, and I run head first into that cursed door. And if that wasn't enough, then it starts closing on me! Did it not see me? Am I superman? I don't move that fast!

So then the guy behind me gets all worried and starts asking if I'm okay. Attempting to salvage what little of my pride remains, I smile, laugh a little, make some stupid comment about how the door was supposed to open, and I walk (yes, quickly) into the store.

Crisis averted.

Until one of the other (quite entertained, I'm sure) people walks behind me and says,

"Don't worry, I've done it before, too."

Thank you. Now I feel even more stupid! I thought perhaps it was just the old guy that had really noticed, the one that checked to see if I was okay. Nope. Everyone and their dog saw me run into the stupid door. As I'm writing this, I wish I would have bowed or something, you know, to make myself seem less frazzled by publicly humiliating myself. Instead, I just smiled grudgingly and walked (yes, quickly) on my way. I got my things as fast as I could and kept my head down as I check out. I'm pretty sure the same guy was standing behind me in line. I was so uncomfortable I forgot to get the main thing I went in for in the first place. Go figure.

I'm gonna blame this one on my big brother.

Have you even humiliated yourself in public?

A sale! A sale! We got another sale! OOOrrraaahhhhh!

Sold! We're signing sales agreements today for BOTH of our stores! woot woot! That means we can sign on our next business venture!

First things first: what kind of car should I get? bahahaha. we actually might get a volvo- just a basic one, not too expensive, but volvo will fly you to sweden if you want to buy a new car from the factory. Free trip to europe baby!
[image error]    should I get orange? kind of a good looking car, don't you think?

Heath wants to get one of these
[image error] which will maybe happen in a few months, while I'm forced to wait for my volvo until next summer when we have time to fly to sweden. Which, by the way, will be a most excellent vacation because they also pay for you to have insurance on the car for 15 days, so you can cruise around europe! right? it's gonna be great! and then I can go see castles in england, cuz it's really close to sweden. just a small ocean :) but I hear flights in between european countries are super cheap, so don't worry: it's gonna happen.

Then, when I'm rollin' because I'm a famous author, I'm gonna get this:

[image error][image error]
pictures for your pleasure :)

but what color will I get? Audi R8's are freakin' sweet! yes, I will have one, and I shall not feel guilty for spending 150k on a car- when I have millions, it will be okay :) plus, while a vette can beat it off the line, the audi can beat the vette in a real life course (like with turns and such). (not the base vette, the cool one- I don't know what it's called lol- who needs to know? all you need to know is that this car exists, and you should buy it... or just drool over mine when I get it haha).

On a side note- since we're talking about the cars I'm going to get when I make it rich off my novels- I finished a romance novel. It took like two weeks to write. I think I'm going to be  romance novel author. Should I submit it to rwa? probably. maybe I should post it on here and you can read it and tell me... hmmmm, interesting. romance novels, by the way, are super super easy to write, especially if you read as many as I do. And don't worry, they're not the trashy romance novel types- they're clean... laced with heated passion and unrequited love haha. anyway, I'm off to write my epic novel- the one that's actually more than just a lovely story or heated romance. It's gonna be good. Until next time, enjoy the car pics :)
