What I'm Reading
Amanda Palmer, “The Art of Asking.” I’m only half-way through, but I’m fascinated. Her reflections on art and commerce are interesting - and the book itself reads like a business book (“Be a Successful Author in 12 Steps!”) as written by a anti-capitalist riot grrrl. Yeah, a little dissonant - but in a good way. If you’re a writer or artist, I’d highly recommend this one.
(And here’s her TED talk on the subject)
If you've been living under a rock and missed this...like me...
I’m waaaay behind the times on this, but the podcast ‘Serial’? Wow! If you like mysteries, or true crime, or good radio - listen…

Learn to write from screenwriters
I’ve been listening to ‘Scriptnotes’, a podcast for screenwriters. Although some of the content is focused on Hollywood biz, there’s some great dicussions of topics that relate to all writers. The 'Doing Not Thinking' podcast was particularly good:
The first review is in - and it's good!
A great review of my upcoming book, “Tap Out”, from CM, the Canadian Review of Materials. This online publication is all-volunteer - so thank you to Hayley Toivanen for picking my book to review!
Podcasts that I heart.
Radiolab is my absolute favourite. And the latest episode is all about self-referential, post-modern narratives. Actually, it’s about pro wrestling, Seinfeld, and Don Quixote. Actually, it’s about both. Well worth your time.
Big emotions don't need big words.
Anything that helps me to write cleanly and powerfully is a tool I want in my arsenal. Check out this little online gizmo. Great for writers, but also for creative writing teachers.

"Lots of action, adventure, bad decisions, and good intentions. Some violence and swearing"
- A review of “Final Crossing” from Goodreads that pretty much sums up all of my books.

Thanks for the great review, Booklist!
Booklist, the magazine of the American Library Association, gave Final Crossing a great review this month. They say…
Driven by action and adrenalin, this is a clearly written page-turner for reluctant readers. …Ultimately a tale of redemption and new beginnings, this (novel) couches its message of hope within a high-stakes fight for freedom.
