The Somerville...

The Somerville Public Library, in a partnership with the Harvard Library Innovation Lab, launched the “Awesome Box” project at all three SPL branches in early February. This endeavor will allow patrons to give fellow users suggestions on what book/CD/DVD they found to be “awesome.” “Somerville is the first public library to get on board with the ‘Awesome Box’ project,” says Maria Carpenter, Somerville’s library director. “We are always looking for dynamic, innovative and creative approaches to library service, and this was certainly one of those.” Here’s how it will work: When a patron particularly enjoys an item, he or she will return the book into the “Awesome Box,” which will be clearly labeled with appropriate signage. Then, a library staff member will scan the book twice – once, checking the book in as usual, then another time to list that item on the “awesome” page. this is going in my STOLEN IDEA box. right next to blind date with a book.
This definitely looks like something worth pitching at my library. Potential problem, though: you’d have to make everyone on staff aware of the box so they could find popular items when they went to pull holds.
Love the idea, and that The Tick qualifies as awesome…

A friend just lent me a copy of a Three Investigators mystery. This was a seminal influence on my early teen reading years. Can’t wait to read it again - wonder how it’s aged over 30 years or so?

Not a great work of literature, but a fascinating account of men and dogs working under pressure. Someone is going to turn this into a big movie someday, a la War Horse.

Daggyland: Outlining a book
daggyland has a great post on outlining - very appropriate for me right now. I’m in the middle of outlining my next book. I’m veering back and forth between creating a master outline and just writing the damn chapters. Glad to see I’m not alone in my schizophrenic approach.
I always outline when I’m writing nonfiction. It just seems to make sense. The editor tells you what the publication is looking for. They spell it out in your “letter of agreement.” You do the reporting, then sit down and organize the facts exactly the way everyone has told you they want it. In…

Night Terrors
The nightmares were bad enough, but now the terror is real. Ever since he watched his little brother drown last summer, Dylan has felt like he’s losing it. He can’t shake the nightmares that plague him—dreams from which he wakes up screaming every night. Dylan takes a summer job at a remote wilderness hotel, hoping to leave his problems behind. But when he volunteers to help close up the resort for the winter, things only get worse. Edward, the hotel manager, seems to be out to get him. A freak snowstorm blocks the road to the resort, leaving them trapped for days. And Dylan keeps seeing a ghost that might be trying to send him a message - or maybe Dylan really is going crazy this time.
