The Rage by Gene Kerrigan

The Rage by Gene Kerrigan:

I am totally digging this Irish noir police procedural. Twisty, turny plot with lots of morally compromised characters. Love it…

What Kept Me Writing This Week

1. Music: BANKS. She’s going to be huge, people…

2. Music: Ellie Goulding covering nerd-rockers Alt-J. And making it sexy….

3. The Magicians and The Magician King, by Lev Grossman. Devoured both of these in one go. Felt like the novels one of my smart high-school D&D buddies might have written.

“Interesting fact: Crime fiction outsells SF and Fantasy combined by about 3:1. (If I was purely focused on making money by writing fiction, that’s where I’d be. (But one word of caution: writing crime is a lot harder and more specialised than I realized before I tried it. It’s got the research requirements of hardcore physics-driven hard SF, combined with the characterization requirements of literary fiction, and your plotting had better be bulletproof or it just won’t work. (Hint: write the first 90% of the book, with lots of random clues and characters. Then go back, re-read it, decide who Did It, delete contradictory evidence, and write the end.)))”

Huh. Maybe I should try sci fi. Sounds easy in comparison.

RIP, Richard Matheson. Strange thing, I had just picked up a collection of his short stories ("The Box") last week. I’d just finished it when I heard the news, so his loss is particularly keen. The man knew how to write a twisty tale…
