What inspires?
Sometimes it can be something as deceptively simple as a hat. You might think ‘really?’ or more likely ‘well, that’s really stupid’ but it’s true.
When envisioning the character of Fiona for my upcoming release A Question for Harry, the basics regarding her physical appearance and mannerisms had already been touched on in the first books in the series. It was easy enough to compound on them. Also Fiona loves golf and the outdoors which equaled athletic.
So when searching for inspiration on fashion (you can see samples of these on my Pinterest page for A Question for Harry) I tended to choose gowns with simple lines and little embellishment - or at least as simple as the fashion of the 1890s allowed. Things I thought Fiona would like but then I added a hat.
This hat. To a walking dress she wears out for a walk one day.
That one simple inclusion prompted a side of Fiona MacKintosh that I hadn’t even begun to imagine existed. A side that Harry Brudenall sees as something of a sensualist hidden beneath Fiona’s no-nonsense exterior. One hat led to satin beaded shoes, embroidered and lace bedecked parasols, silk embroidered stockings and undergarments that leave Harry stunned and breathless.
One little thing.
A whole new world of possibilities.
That is inspiration at its finest.
