Tired Hearts Press | Est. 2012:

Thank you, Tired Hearts Press, for choosing my manuscript “Bad Girls, Honey” as a semi-finalist for your publishing contest. I hope you take the crazy chance of publishing a book entirely comprised of poems about Lana Del Rey. Either way, I appreciate the sugary opportunity!

POETRY WRITING PROMPT #14 (OF 30!)

Congratulations on writing two weeks worth of poems!

Today I want to consider the special place in hell for the people spoiling Game of Thrones on the internet.

As you know, I am wont to turn negative things into positive ones, which is where today’s writing prompt comes from. Write 30 spoiler alerts for your life.

Maybe you write about things that have already happened, like, “Spoiler alert: Your first love breaks up with you in his car. Spoiler alert: you get over it. Spoiler alert: you forget his middle name.”

OR

Write spoiler alerts that you predict for your future, like “Spoiler Alert: your funeral is so full of friends they have to hold two funerals to fit everybody.” With that option, you can negate all your life’s fears with a little reassurance from THE FUTURE.

Have fun, be specific, use more images than adjectives. Write the details of your life - your greatest tool.

SPOILER ALERT: you’re awesome and your poem is gonna be too.

Some guy on the street just told me to ‘put a smile on that pretty face’ so I lifted both corners of my mouth with two middle fingers.

POETRY WRITING PROMPT #12 of 30!

So I’ve had the pleasure of being able to accompany Shira E on a lot of her local music shows lately. If you don’t know Shira E’s music - remedy that today. It will cherry-blossom your life!

Yesterday at a quaint house show in Bushwick, Shira performed one of my favorite songs “Shotgun Wedding” which you can listen to here -http://shirae.bandcamp.com/track/shotgun-wedding-2 . She introduced the song by saying it was about street harassment and an imagining of exacting revenge (which helped her channel her rage in a more productive way.) You really need to listen to the lyrics. I tried to type a line or two, but then I typed the whole song. Anyway, Shira’s commentary reminded me of one of my favorite poems in the universe, “Shooter” by Jan Beatty. Read that HERE -http://meganfalley.tumblr.com/post/11977834313 .

While this song and this poem are violent (but HEY - street harassment and everything Beatty illuminates are HELLA VIOLENT), they both seem like writing them down saved the authors from actually going postal. So today, I want you to make some lists. What do you want revenge for? What are some wrongs that need to be righted in your world? What feels unsettled, or unfair? Is it a singular incident, or a whole world’s worth of garbage that you need to make right?

Today, get your revenge. Today, put your finger on the problem. It doesn’t have to be violent (maybe you just want to Harriet-the-Spy-it-up and cut a ponytail or two), but you can also totally go Tarantino on some folks. Remember, it’s a poem, not real life, and if unleashing in this arena keeps you out of jail in real life - then POETRY WINS AGAIN.

My poem “What the Hour Hand Said to the Minute Hand”...

My poem “What the Hour Hand Said to the Minute Hand” is being turned into a short film. I am so honored by the artists across so many different mediums who have been inspired to express this piece in another kind of art. I can’t wait to share the video with you next week. For now, enjoy this teaser!
