Friends, Acquaintance, and Stranger Muses

Have you ever walked down the aisle at your local super market and watched a lady with ill-fitting clothes, messy hair, two teeth and wondered if you can fit her into a character?  I believe they call that a creature of Walmart.  Makes you wonder if people own a mirror.  Trust me I spend way to much time looking at the Creatures of Walmart site.  Need a can't breathe, can't see, because your laughing so hard moment?  Visit that site.  Who would this lady be?  Maybe a misunderstood, neglected and forgotten soul, who wins the lottery and buys a bar?  Maybe it's a disguise and she's really an evil witch come to boil your children.  She unzips the mask from her face revealing green skin and black hair.At the same super market you could see a, devilishly, good looking man, buying produce.  You could turn him into a firefighter buying food for the firehouse.  I know, I know, those that know me well are like here she goes with the firemen again.  I can't help it, so in love with firemen and paramedics.  So anyway, there he is flirting with your main character across from a pile of cucumbers, and offers to cook her dinner.  Hhmm, side of man candy anyone?Say you take a dream vacation to Egypt.  As you pass through the market you picture the days of Ramses the Great. What if they had infomercials back then, but a live version?  As you pass the traders you stop to browse some fabric.   A little man with a bald head, necklaces, dirty nails, and a white loin cloths pops out.  "This silk is on sale today only."  He thrusts the fabric at you.  As your fingers run over it he shouts, "but wait, there's more.  If you buy in the next two seconds you get a set of knives."  You duck as he throws them at you.  They lodge in the wood rails holding his tent up.  Everyone has that one crazy friend.  You know the type, complete spazoid tha's instant hilarity.  My friend Shawn is like that.  Every time I'm around him I can't stop laughing.  A constant supply of tissues are needed because I'm crying.  He has no hesitation of doing a spot on imitation of Chris Farley on SNL with Patrick Swayze.   Fat guy doing Chippendales in the middle of a crowd, it's an attention getter.  What great comic relief for a book.  You could make him the lovable screw up, who everyone forgives because he's just too cute.  He could be that friend your character turns to for a laugh when the world seems to be closing in.  Hopefully we surround ourselves with people that are willing to lay their life on the line for others.  Instant hero material for a book.  Up pops the villain and your character is injured or killed saving the one they love or their friends.  These kinds of people never take life for granted and see the beauty in everything.  Girls do this more than guys, but you have that friend you can tell anything.  Have those intimate conversations about sex, love and life.  Us girls can get into some deep conversations about our sex lives, so beware guys, how you are in the bedroom is common knowledge to all your girl's friends.  Bring on the Sex in the City banter.  This could bring in the friend that warns you against a bad relationship choice, or the cheerleader backing you up.  You know the conversations.  "Girl, what are you doing with him?"  Or the, "Give me details," conversation.  When choosing a muse we see someone in our head.  Maybe a celebrity.  Grated we don't know their personalities and bad habits so we can make them fit into our mold.  I have used Jared Leto, Alex O'Loughlin, and on more than one occasion Jonathan Rhys Meyers (he's my favorite).  For girls I don't really use celebrities.  So far my main characters have been girls based on someone I know personally, some even myself.  Basically the idea of my little rant is that you can find a muse in every single person alive or dead.  I think you could even use this as writer's block repellant.  Get out the can of writers block killer and spray away.   If you find yourself in a mind kink take notice of the people around you.  Make up a quick story about them in your head.  It's fun to play this little game on road trips as well, though laughter may result in a car crash.Keep writing and finding inspiration.

Dark Corners is out

Liz's book is out today.  I was privileged enough to read this book before it's release.  I had to take my computer to bed with me because I couldn't stop reading.  It's suspenseful, scary, and takes you on a roller coaster ride.  You fight to not skip forward to see what happens.  Bravo to Liz for writing such a page turner.
